Rick and Morty

Watched the first two episodes of the season ... And was left very unimpressed.

The episodes were a fucking mess, structurally. The second episode in particular had far too many subplots; it feels as if the writers are only able to write a third of an episode, don't know how to continue the story, and then just say "fuck it, let's combine the three episodes we wrote in the same episode."

With the way episode 2 ended, I should have felt something ... But I didn't because the episode's writing had zero focus or cohesiveness. If this had been an earlier Rick and Morty episode, I guarantee I would have felt something. This subplot should have been its own episode.

Oh, and most of the jokes in these two episodes did not land. I had a chuckle at the Meeseeks gag. That's pretty much it.

Seems to me like season 4 is repeating season 3's theme of being more violent and gory than funny.

Pseudo-psychological exposition is the thing I hated most about season 3 and its back in spades for season 4. I get what they were going for in episode two with Rick's toilet buddy, but they fucked it up by having Rick's feelings explained to him through constant 3rd party exposition instead of through his actions and behavior. Compared to the finale of Rick Potion #9, it feels so stilted and unearned.

Writers need to know when to shut the fuck up and trust the audience to fill in the blanks.

Heist episode was okay. I know characters ranting about the tropes of the story they're engaging in is like 50% of Harmon's comedy, but I don't think its ever been this obnoxious before. It honestly felt more like a Harmontown rant than an episode of Rick and Morty.

I wish CN hardballed Harmon and got him kicked off the show after season 3, because all of the flaws of this season reek of his handiwork.

I don't feel Harmon had the effect he wanted to have on me - I do agree that it sucks how predictable things can be in any medium, sometimes. Too bad I can accept a little predictability as long as I'm enjoying what I'm seeing, otherwise.

This latest episode of Rick and Morty only re-inforced my enjoyment of heist films (for example). Predictability aside - that's a thing in all films (no - all mediums, unfortunate but true, as it is.) and Harmon's just being a little bitch as usual. The only bitching he should be doing is if the films he's criticizing are actually bad and begging for it because they're bad. That's his only excuse I'm willing to buy for him and the crew he surrounds himself with not being all that funny outside of the first 2 seasons, anyway.

My takeaway is that Harmon clearly hasn't seen a good heist film in his life - that's what I can take away from all his bitching at best, autistic as I know this sounds (not sorry, either.). Admittedly enough - it feels good seeing Harmon get some heat for being a crybaby whose mad his silly show isn't MORE popular than it already is and he should be thankful it's even popular at all, honestly.

Seriously, everyday people in getting into / struggling ever so much to make it in this field would kill for the positive attention Harmon is getting for his otherwise rather ugly-looking show, as it is.

Yeah, him complaining about heists movies being, all the same, is hypocritical of him considering every episode of Rick and Morty literally uses the exact same story circle he uses and brags about "character enters an unfamiliar situation, adapts and changes".

If you go to the bare bones of anything, everything seems repetitive. but stories including heist movies are more than just the bare bones. We watch them in part to see characters being resourceful and clever.

It wasn't a bad episode, but I still like heist movies.

In other words, tv tropes will ruin your life.

I've finally caught up. 3 episodes into season 4 and I already can recognize some problems.

The episodes of Season 4 have better stories than humor. This is weird because Rick and Morty used to have a balance of good stories and good humor. The stories are all fine, but the humor feels like it's slacking off. It feels like they ran out of good jokes to tell or any good quips from Rick. They feel tired. I feel like there was enthusiasm within the first 2 seasons that the 3rd season and this season lacks. There's no energy. Everything feels way too nonchalant. There's not really a moment of silliness. The bizarre element is just...there.

Also I hate this MUH DIVERSITY WRITERS meme. Yeah, they make up some of the weaker writers, but the same writers from s1 and s2 are writing the same quality weak shit now.

The Dragon episode was the best one this season, but that's not saying much.

I don't want to say the episodes were awful, but something just felt off in all five. Maybe it was trying to tackle too much in each episode, but there were no home runs this season. And if the season is only going to be 5 episodes, then that comes with higher expectations per episode.

Look at Primal. That was only 5 episodes in its first stretch, but each episode was unique, interesting, and had character development and emotion. I know R&M is a different kind of show, but in its earlier episodes, it was funny and enjoyable, and here, it just felt like the show equivalent of empty calories. I didn't hate it...but I know I'll forget about it in a month or so.

Maybe another issue is the constant referencing of the past. Mr. Meeseeks came back, Mr. Poopybutthole came back, Gear Head came back, The Key and Peele time guys came back...and it wasn't to evolve them as characters or build to something (Like they did last season with Evil Morty) but rather they, dare I say it, went the "Member Berries" route with them. 5 episodes and almost every one relied on joke characters from the past, and to elevate stories that weren't well executed or that interesting. The Snake world story felt like something that would have been a throwaway gag in earlier episodes (Like the Squirrels from Morty's Mindblowers or the Phone/Pizza/Chair worlds from Season 1) yet inexplicably got a full episode dedicated to it.

We got a couple funny lines here and there, but it never quite reached the heights I saw in R&M's earlier seasons.
