Just to add to this, a big reason the N64 pivoted Nintendo more to kiddy games was that Nintendo decided to stick to cartridges instead of moving to CDs. While cartridges had faster load times and were more durable, they held only 1/10th the storage at most (64mb vs 600mb) as well as being more expensive for the developers. This was a big reason, along with Sega screwing up the Saturn launch in the US, decided to take a gamble on the Playstation. This left Nintendo relying heavily on 1st and 2nd party developers to develop games for the N64 as many 3rd party developers, notably Square Enix, adbandoned Nintendo along with their more mature games that could have had Nintendo shake their reputation as a kiddie console. Nintendo hasn't really recovered from all the 3rd party devs leaving them until the Switch.

They knew that their load times were a real problem. Early PS1 ports from PC show how bad that can get. Because the PS1 uses a 1x or a 2x speed where at this point thats a slow CD drive on a PC, all to cut costs.

Nintendo does shit super safe always. The one time they were really on the cutting edge of tech was the Virtual Boy. It didn't work out. Even the gameboy and the wii was tech they wanted to be able to put out "cheap". Even if it wasn't super well known tech. Nintendos thing has always been workable cheap tech that catches attention. Thats where cartridges come in. They got a lot of good looking game on those things, but FMVs were harder.

It was FMVs that Sony loved. And pre rendered backgrounds. These are important. The way early texturing works, means you gotta use primary colors. So, 3D games tend to look bright and cartoony. Especially the early ones. Also, harder to make believable looking spaces. Prerendering was much better for that. Look at Resident Evil. Now N64 wasn't great at pre rendered images because they take up a lot of space. You cant really parse them out like you can models and textures. Like a room with a bookcase model can reuse the same bookcase in every room with one. But a pre rendered room with a book case is stuck looking like that room.

This is what happened. The games you made on N64 couldnt look terribly realistic, and so they kept making cartoonier looking games. PS1 could do it, it attracted an audience. Not only people who grew up playing Nintendo, but adults at that time. I know my Dad got really intrigued in the PS1 because it could do better sports games and had PC ports of stuff his PC was falling behind on after he had 2 children eating up his upgrade money.

Sure yeah Snakes probably condemning billions to their deaths but he's also destroying the corrupt system that oppresses billions and gives the survivors a chance to create a better life for themselves. He decides to switch the tapes at the end of Escape from New York because the President offers half-hartted platitudes about Snakes buddies who died helping him save the President. Same thing in Escape from LA the President could care less about Snakes buddies who died recovering the EMP device and even sends his own daughter to the electric chair, so Snake gives the ultimate middle finger and blows the whole world back to the Dark Ages. To be fair, Robert's childhood didn't sound particularly happy after a certain age based on his book, but that's because he was an angry sped who threw tantrums in class that caused him to get sent to the counselor and saw himself as some kind of badass anti-establishment figure for refusing to listen to or cooperate with said counselor, not because his parents were abusive. He didn't mention getting bullied in his book either. It sounded more like everyone just stopped wanting to be friends with him after a certain age. He also claimed he got over it and started partying and having sex when he got older, but...


I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing up the whole "I was bullied!" angle now as a sympathy ploy because the types of people in his small fanbase, plus the idpol people he wants to get in with are generally pretty sympathetic to that.
