I've known a few engineers who are into nerdy entertainment. The difference is, I think, they treat it like entertainment instead of a lifestyle. But does that mean we abandon it completely? An entire company like WB moving their whole slate for 2021 to streaming / theatres is a statement. More companies are going to follow suit. Sure, you can still go to the theater
and see it. But if every movie has that option day 1 there will never be an incentive for folks to return outside of the niche experience once things are safe (i don't think this is going to be in 2021 mind you). Theatres were already in rough shape. The pandemic is a nail in the coffin for many. This wholesale removal of support is the funeral pyre. Give people something big for sure. Maybe do a couple big things just to keep people interested. But you have to hold SOMETHING people were looking forward to for the future. You are not going to get people in seats once the damage is done with something new they weren't already anticipating.

Now... there is a bigger issue at stake in my opinion. This issue is ACESSIBILITY. Now. Streaming day 1 has AMAZING implications theatres should have embraced a long time ago. Whether it be social anxiety, physical handicaps and any other numerous reasons. Theatres should have evolved and offered their own streaming option a long time ago. Maybe offer free physical passes when you rent a streaming film or something. There is a double-edged sword to accessibility though. Streaming ability offers studios a level of control on accessibility that has potentially bad ramifications. Film critics, etc have relied up until now mostly large scale screenings at hub theatres to see films. These often coincide with public screenings intended to get word of mouth out. If this shifts to streaming they now can control access via passwords, etc. Meaning that they can PICK AND CHOOSE who gets to see their films. This will make it easier to only select critics and public figures, etc who will most likely react positively. This is a terrible precedent that has already been creeping up with streaming releases.

This is just an opinion. Admittedly a very privileged one coming from someone who doesn't have any skin in the same financially. If theatres die, all I lose is an experience I love and hope to return to some day. Others lose jobs. This is now the world we live in.

Maybe so, but WB situation is quite different now. Their bosses, AT&T are in a sink or swim mode. With a ludricous amount of debt and betting their future on 5G and streaming services, the higher ups at AT&T couldn't give less of a fuck about "the talent", because "the talent" aint gonna unfuck them.

Not a business guy in the least, but looking from outside, WB and AT&T are right to bring their blockbusters to HBOmax.

Streaming is kinda shit, Netflix has some of the good ol classics and most people are still subscribed to it out of habit, but fuck me netflix original are a terrible. Amazon prime sucks and Disney+ is a joke.

If WB wants to make that netflix cash and place themselves abouve the rest, now is the time to strike, and either go big or go home. And like it or not, the news that HBO max are getting these blockbusters is making people's head turn.

Everybody is already getting fed up with so many stream services, to the point that a lot of people just keep netflix and the rest they pirate. So for HBOmax, either they make some genuine buzz, or they end up like Disney+, and all they can offer is some Star Wars fanfic bullshit.

One amusing thing about the chick with epilepsy who Robert is trying to whiteknight, she both told people not to make it about her and also she doesn't seem to agree with Blob on the game at all, she was excited for it (and I presume still is), but she wanted to warn people about the strobe effect until it's fixed*.
