I'd like to troll MovieBob, but I don't want to keep paying for burner phone numbers to make new accounts. Any way to get around this?
Simple. Don't A-log, and let Roberto de las Peliculas produce milk on his own.

We don't need another John Spetznaz.
Can't believe that 2012 feels like a whole different era right now.
I miss when people sperged about the Mayan calendar.
"...because wisdom is also grace."
Bobby got it backwards. It is grace that is wisdom: to be able to first truly, sincerely forgive others because God has forgiven you, and then forgive yourself, again thanks to God's grace, this is what wisdom is about.
So Blobert's thick as pigshit. What's new?

And here I was thinking he needed money to pay the bills and for healthcare.

Let me just point out that dehumanising people is one of the ten stages of genocide.

What's so controversial about ”we shouldn't bomb Syria when the economy's closed and people need money”?

As I said on Wednesday:

If they're stupid enough to fully abolish the filibuster, they'll get what's coming to them in '24.

Grace does not have its limits; we are all capable of receiving God's grace.

We need to add theology to the list of things Cinema Roberto doesn't understand.
Bob is even harsher than John Calvin.

There's yet another Marvel TV show coming to Hulu. What do you think Bob's going to say about this?
Shouldn't they be containing their heretical corruption to Disney+? Or is this too "mature"?

Also, I cannot hear Patton Oswalt without thinking, "This is Patton Oswalt. This is Patton Oswalt. This is..." the entire time.

Which is not only distracting, I start to feel enraged by how he completely raped the corpse of MST3K and is now allowed to walk around as a free man.

There is a chance he will bad mouth it the show is the last hold out from old Marvel TV which is now gone. Now all Marvel shows are made by Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige while Marvel TV was run by Ike Perlmutter who didn't want to do Black Panther or Captain Marvel and was a member of the Trump administration.

What exactly do you mean by that? I know Patton Oswalt was in the MST3K reboot, but was there something going on behind the scenes?
I think him just being involved is apparently heresy alone. From what I saw, the guy wasn't part of the writing team and frankly, I'd say he was much more fun to watch than Felicia Day, at least he actually seemed to have tried.

Maybe it'll be good. Maybe it'll be bad. Maybe it'll be like almost EVERY other piece of Marvel media and just be okay. First blush makes it seem like it has some potential, a downtrodden super villain that no one's heard of who's the head of a failing evil organization just trying to make a name for himself and they're not afraid of violence and blood? I'd be kind of interested if I weren't so dead inside with marvel fatigue, or whatever we were calling it three years ago, and sick of the soygasming that retards like Bob do every time something like this comes about.
I feel your pain, dude. That superhero fatigue is no joke.

I’m tired of Disney Princesses and capeshit. The stories use to be fun, inspirational and wholesome.

Nowadays, we get:

1. Teen angst

2. Poor redemption arcs

3. Unsympathetic villains who try to be sympathetic

4. Insecure, self-righteous, ‘quirky’ characters(ex. RWBY & Steven Universe)

5. Repetitive plots & cliches

6. Mary-Sue power fantasies

There’s a whole bunch of other stuff but I’m leaving it at that.

Honestly, I don’t blame most content creators for wanting to go into business for themselves. I’ve seen some independent web series that are pretty good.

Prince Harry and Meghan are a lot like the dick flattening meme.
I'd like to add: if the genders here we reversed, and it was a man isolating his wife from her entire family and moving him across the globe for his own personal career interests, people would be rightly calling him a selfish, abusive prick.

My understanding is/was that Patton was an early colluder with Joel on the effort to plan the reboot prior to all of the casting decisions. He was originally slated to be a writer before Joel miracled him up to Second Banana Heaven.

There's no doubt he's more entertaining than Felecia Day, or really anyone on the show by far. He's an actual performer.

Which is probably why I feel like he bears a disproportionate amount of responsibility after Joel. He was the grown up in the room.

The problem is that MST3K was a lightning-in-a-bottle situation that largely took off because of a confluence of specific talent, a distinctly Midwestern (and by extension, average American) viewpoint and an evolving media situation that gave them exposure to a broad audience.

Joel is great at being a weirdo and seizing opportunities as a scrappy upstart but the cultural context is so vastly different that it's not enough. Guys like Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Frank Conniff brought a level of training, polish, and professionalism to the show and my intuition is that Joel had difficulty with that transition.

Mike and Kevin interview bundled with the old Rhino MST3K DVDs
Again, in my opinion this is why Mike, Kevin, and Bill have been successful doing stuff like RiffTrax for over a decade and this Netflix reboot flamed out.

To me the spiritual successor to MST3K is RedLetterMedia which captures the scrappy upstarts aspect combined with the old media experience and training + capitalizing on the new medium (YouTube) to poke fun of the old media (film and TV) from a relatively "average American" perspective (except for Jay's fondness for more unusual stuff).

It mostly saddens me that such an iconic property was not placed in more capable hands.

Somewhat offtopic as well, but I'll give the Netflix reboot that they actually had very good movie picks for riffing, and from what I watched it almost felt like Netflix did more meddling with the scripts. Which kinda gives this impression since they apparently left it (and from what I read they're looking to bring it back by other streaming channels or something like that), they kinda have a better chance to hire better writers. But, anyway back to our regular Bob talk.

<<MST3K Reboot Stuff>>
I watched a single episode of the MST3K reboot expecting to hate it, and then I was pleasently surprised at how much I didn't and it even got a few laughs out of me. It was strangely heartwarming how much I actually enjoyed myself watching it.

The problem is, I never had any motivation to watch anymore of it and I don't think I've seen a single episode since.

Agreed, I stopped watching after Joel left the SOL, not because I didn't think the rest of the cast tried their best, not that Mike Nelson isn't funny or at least a nice guy not trying to inject you with edginess and politics...

It's just that, it wasn't and would never be the same.

Like how you as a kid can only have your 16th birthday once..... it's a great growing-up milestone, and you'll have other great birthdays, but, you can't ever experience being 16 again. Comedy Central (or, as it was known then, The Comedy Channel) circa 1993 can never come again, and neither can that funny program on it where they talk smack at bad movies.... it came, it went, and I'd rather watch reruns than try to reboot it....

To me, Mitchell (heart poundin' ! Veins cloggin! ) was the last MST3K episode.

Speaking of, what does draw him to RoboCop if that is his favorite film?

It has a couple themes that resonate with Bob's worldview/politics

1- A protagonist gifted an effectively indestructible robotic body, largely due to circumstance. Murphy didn't do anything to become Robocop except die horrifically and become the first fresh corpse available for the job. Bob expects technology will gift him immortality similarly through nothing other than existing and him being available to benefit.

The moral/philosophical ramifications of this (are you still human if they resurrect you after death and use your brain as a CPU and your surviving memories of how to do your job as software? How would your family feel to learn that was your fate?) have likely never been dwelled upon by Roberto even though a good chunk of the movie deals with it. Partly because he's probably too dense to pick up on it without the movie having a ham-fisted cry session to make you force -feel empathy, and probably partly due to the fact he's too wonderstruck by the premise of cyborg bodies being a thing only "20 minutes into the future" to do anything but drool.

After all, if they can resurrect dead blue-collar schleps like cops as public-servant street-cleaning robots? Well, surely that means the elite (Bobby) will have even fancier bodies ready for them only 10 minutes into the future... and they'll get to do cool things like fly though space while the obsoletes get to be made into anthropomorphic garbage trucks and clean up the mess they made on Earth... for eternity....

Basically, the central Macguffin that runs the sci-fi part of the narrative: (we're on the cusp of humans transcending death through robotics) is Bobbys' personal wet dream, he he's latched onto the film the same way a coomer latches on to porn - to create a more elaborate fantasy world in which to better jack off. Only Bobby's jacking is purely mental (one hopes) about how THIS is the future he will surely get, and soon! (This was 1989 levels of technology, after all! Surely we're only a few days away from it in 2020!)

2.- OCP's (a mega-corp) stated goal is to bulldoze Detroit (an obsolete shithole of a blue-collar city) and rebuild it as Delta City (A perfect blue utopia where everyone gets a bugpod, and all the menial tasks will be done by a race of robo-chattel who never complain and always obey their masters?) Tell me he isn't busting his other nut at that premise.

And again, he's too busy doing that to miss the obvious: OCP is corrupt, not doing it out of the goodness of their heart but in hopes of having a captive consumer class, potentially making homeless cases out of millions of people who will move on before they'll eat bugs and live in pods, and the question arises of WHAT exactly these new consoomers are going to do for a living. Since OCP never explains on-screen what will remedy that which killed IRL Detroit at the time- loss of jobs leading to crumbling infrastructure and disintegrating neighborhoods not robust enough to stave off crime and drugs filling the void, after they've built those shiny new towers, and construction workers aren't needed, what are these people going to do? The only thing OCP has planned, or mentioned on screen, is to sell them drugs and prostitutes.... they never talk about what industries or employment opportunities they'll bring, it's a city built on "learn to code and free gibs" , but because it's a city, the pinnacle of human development? Bobby just goes with it, never asking how it will work. It'll just work because it's new and run by oligarchs who are just as dismissive of the mayoghouls as he is, as it should be.

TL : DR - The plot of Robocop is what consumerism/80's capitalism run amok would look like. It's also how Bobby thinks the world should actually be run because the end result is robotic bodies and no more working-class people holding up the elites' visions. The long-term social consequences of this and gaping holes in logic in the master plan are not dwelled upon because they won't affect him, and if they do, he can just move to the next planet with the rest of the elite, surely they won't be leaving HIM behind.

I heard a lot of people being excited about this because of the approach they are taking. And considering most of Marvel animation has been flat-out the garbage during the Loeb's era. Then I'll personally give it a shot even if I have to must mute Patton Oswald in my mind to enjoy it.

Why do you think I began filtering the words like Bob's out? Because simply put, I don't want to grow bitter toward the stuff I enjoy because the fatass loves it. People like him are the bane of casual fans since they are the loudest fucking voices of the bunch, but also the most ignorant of them all. It might be optimistic of me to enjoy the genre still after all its flaws, but it's better than letting this asshole, and his bias poison what still is a mine of potentially good stories.

I hear you, my friend. To this day, my dad will burst out randomly "Mitchell!" if there's a car chase or goofy fight on TV.

One more MST3K story before I get banned from the thread for OT posting.

I had Episode 416 - Fire Maidens of Outer Space (queued to time code) on in the background as I worked on projects this weekend and they read that letter from young Ashley Holtgraver who, based on the letter, seemed like she would be about my age.

I had to find out if her sister turned out to look like Tom Servo so I just googled her and up popped her website with a link to her (*shudder*) Tumblr with this as one of the last posts:

Bringing this around to Film Robert, that's an appropriate and healthy way to interact with nostalgic material from one's childhood. Presumably she didn't end up writing a book where she compared the Joel/Mike transition to JFK's assassination or something.

Me too, I'm old enough that I had the MST3K sounds .wad for Doom II back in the day... *the imp dying was Crow saying "Oops, I broke him" etc...

IIRC, the *clunk* the elevator makes as it stops was all three of them going "MITCHELL!"

But like you said, unlike Bobbo, we can let go of the past because that's the best place for it. We don't tie our present-day worth as people to 30 year old TV shows, we have other methods to self-actualize other than keeping entertainment franchises alive when they're no longer culturally compatible.
