To be fair to them, it looks like it's literally just an unscripted pop culture podcast where they talk about other people's videos. Not the sort of thing I want to engage with for any length of time since it's very much that style of content where you put the TV on while you cook or something and don't actually watch it. They've clearly carved out a niche, but it's not one that appeals to me. I think you're right about the audience being people who like hearing their unfavorite flicks get shit on.
As for Mauler's scripted content, I watched some of his response to the Defense of Dark Souls II video and his biggest issues are A) being unable to cut out extraneous details and B) letting the flow of the thing he's responding to write his script. The latter might seem innocent, but if he was to gather all of his gameplay critiques in one pile, there's more he could cut out as simply a duplication of a point he's made before. The "nitpick" criticism is somewhat valid, even if people do go too far in trying to claim objectivity doesn't exist. There's a heuristic evaluation that Mauler's review style can, potentially, cause you to miss out on because you're too hyper fixated on details. For video games as an example, the experience of playing a level is the aggregate of all of the level assets and their layout, and not necessarily thrown off because "Crate_193" uses the wrong texture.

I've watched a few of their streams, mainly when I had literally nothing else on and they were talking about a funny topic (such as Moviebob, them calling him Diabeto and having an arch nemesis named Professor Xercise had me in stitches). But when they have more than 5 people on it becomes absolutely intolerable, you're basically a bystander in a crowded room listening to people all talk over eachother for hours on end.

One of the big issues with those super long form videos is it makes it extremely difficult to respond to. You can't possibly address every point made, and if you tried your video would wind up being twice as long. Very few people who disagree are going to sit and watch the whole thing. But if you don't and raise issues you're going to be accused of taking things out of context. While I don't think it's intentional it certainly creates an echo chamber, the only people who finish the thing are going to be ones who agree with it, so the only people who talk about it with any sense of legitimacy are going to be True Believers. Rinse and repeat, the cycle goes round and round, you end up with the Mauler subreddit and the whole EFAP crew essentially being Mauler cronies that just copy what he says.

Ironically this post has gone on for too long, but there's a reason essays limit you to a word count. You can't be critically assessed on something if you submit an essay that is unreasonably long. So Mauler has put himself in a position where he can only really be attacked on the length of his videos, because no dissenter is going to waste their time watching them.
