The Sonic fanbase is terrible for many reasons, the biggest reason being that it's split into multiple extreme camps: the deviants (erotic roleplayers, porn artists), the depraved (vore and scat enthusiasts), the mentally disturbed (Sonic Passion), the retrofags, the Adventurefags, the AllSonicgamesaregoodfags, the canonfags, SatAMfags, comicfags etc. Even then, there's plenty of overlap between camps so there's always a lot of diversity in the shittiness you encounter. Mario's fanbase is a lot more unified in compassion, because there's not really a lot to talk about besides the games. It's also not nearly as depraved.

Considering Mainstream Mario games, even at their worst, are still relatively polished and well-constructed, I'd say it has less to do with camps and more to do with the fact that there's never been anything to really fight or argue over.

It's telling that Super Mario Sunshine is a game with tons of gameplay issues and instabilities, but it's still marginally better than most games of that nature and has tons of fans regardless.

Doesn't stop Mario from being stale or boring, but you're never going to the level of awful of fucking anything from Sonic since the 2000's.

While that plays a part, I do think the many directions Sonic has taken over the years (cartoons, comics, new gameplay style every few games, JP vs. US marketing) has helped lead to the many splits of Sonic's fanbase. There are dozens of groups all pointing to what they think are the good games and what Sonic needs to be. The franchise just can't seem to find its identity, even now. But I'm getting off-topic so I'll leave it at that.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Bob was the only Mario fan of his calibre, though. His dedication is almost sickening.

Personally, I think that storylines in vidya tend to lead to some of the more serious autistic doses. The Sonic fandom was not NEARLY as autistic until Sonic Adventures 1 and 2 came out, because that's when story became a big part of the Sonic franchise.

Similarly, Zelda's got this really wacky and strange timeline, which in turn attracts all sorts of autists who will argue for hours about it in between bouts of some fetish porn.
