The country's well into in a second Gilded Age, except this time around instead of being dominated by steel, rail, and telegraph, it's dominated by media and the tech sector. Banking being the common industry. Formation was the same, in both cases the progressive of the two parties (Republicans before, Democrats now) got bought out by the dominant industries of their time, and push legislation favoring those industries at the cost of basically everyone else in the country.

The fracturing point before was the Compromise of 1876, this time around it's the 2016 election. In 1876, Western Union and the Associated Press collaborated with the Republican party to ensure the election of robber baron-friendly Hayes; in 2016, the media collaborated with the Democratic party to ensure the nominations of Clinton and Trump. The century of Jim Crow being a fringe benefit.

Populist movements during the Gilded Age got the same pushback by the Republican party, too. We're not to the point of labor conflicts yet, but we're getting there and I bet inside a decade there will be.

If Bob knew what the fuck he was talking about, he'd be hitting on the benefits of polycultural aquaponics or aeroponics systems as a solution for eco-friendly vertical farming.

The number of displaced persons who came to the US seeking work was two million if I remember my statistics right, and that's not counting the number of displaced persons who fled to Mexican urban centers or the maquiladora zone.
