In what ways were the French Revolution unsuccessful Bob? It put France on a different road from the rest of Europe. I don't think France ever wanted what America had. Not fully. But, they got to become a French nation a lot sooner than others in Europe. They made the monarchs scared and those that didn't take the idea of more limited monarchies seriously were in a bad place, looking at you Russia. I'd say its what set them up to win WW1 ultimately. If it had never happened all of Europe would be speaking German these days.

I personally think the revolution was a failure. Yes they successfully overthrew the government and the royalty but they had no cohesive goal/plan other than down with the bourgeois. Regular shmos were put to the blade for just working for the aristocracy. When they ran out of them they turned on each other for wrong think. There were something like 30,000 deaths during the reign of terror. All of this paved the way for Napoleon to come to power and become Emperor.

The French Revolution succeeded in its initial goal, but it failed long-term. Even after the fall of Napoleon, it took until 1830 for representative government that wasn't mostly for show to be established and until 1870 for stable republican government to emerge. And for the Third Republic to survive and not return to monarchy, it needed both for the monarchists to be fractured between Legitimist and Orleanist branches as aftermath of 1830 and a catastrophic military defeat to unite the nation.

And while the Revolution created the modern French nation, Napoleon was the catalyst for the final collapse of the Holy Roman Empire and the creation of German national identity that replaced it. That was a disaster for the French in the long run.

On a psychological basis, this is actually probably true. 90% of the time our behaviour is habit, and the remaining 10% are influential, important decisions that we over-value when asked if we have 'free will'.
Very few have total understanding of the consequences for these actions, but being free to make mistakes is freedom nonetheless.

Unfortunately, somebody like Bob (and everybody in his feed) takes this to mean if free will isn't a lie, its an illusion worth destroying for their end goals.
