Unpopular opinion.

Michael Bay does allot of overlooked cinema mechanics really well and the first Transformers movie is pretty damn solid.
I don't think that's really that unpopular of an opinion among normal everyday people.

Bay does reasonably good "popcorn flicks" that nobody should even attempt to take seriously.

Bay catches shit because idiot film critics try to force his films under the lens of "intellectualism." That's not really Bay's fault. That's them jerking themselves off as they try to appear smart.

His response to all this is spot on: "I make movies for teenage boys. Oh, dear, what a crime.” (source)

He knows his audience.
He tries to satisfy their expectations, and often does.
His films are profitable, and that means the studios will keep going back to him.
He's successful because of that simple recipe.

I thought The Rock was a good movie. Saw it in the theater when I was 15. Turned me into a big Hans Zimmer fan.

True. The Rock, Bad Boys, hell Armageddon. Someone pointed out to me, you watch those early movies. You know who the characters are, what they're about, and what the film is about. That's mechanically sound story telling.

On the flip side, look at true master movie directors like James Cameron. How many movies has he made? T1 and T2, Aliens, Abyss, Titanic, True Lies, and Avatar. When you care more about your work as art, it takes longer. Bay isn't afraid of sacrificing quality for the bottom line, difference between treating it like business and art.

Funnily enough, Ellis did exactly this a few years ago. The difference being she has - or had, I'm not sure if it's still true - enough self-awareness to realize it's a bit autistic to apply feminist theory to a film about giant robots punching each other.

I'm not a huge fan of Ellis, but at least she's smarter than her simps (like that's a high bar).

This why they'll never get rid of him. He's the gift to studio shareholders that keeps on giving.

I'll take their gay arthouse criticism of Bay more seriously when they figure out how to make a movie about transgender cowboys (or whatever) into a successful summer blockbuster. Until then, they'll just have to be content with smelling their own farts not unlike Bob.

we don't know about Bob's 2 year oldish nephew yet. It might be a little early to diagnose exceptionalism for that one. The four year old niece is the one we know is turbo exceptional autist.
Have they ever provided proof that she is? I've always assumed it was just wanting to present as super special parents to a super special snowflake. Also they want you to send them money.

Chris’s sanity is starting to slip from his fingers. Meanwhile, his descent into lolcowdom in his own right is gaining more and more momentum.

I’m not sure what this is about, maybe someone can explain the context of this?
Chris finally..."explains" the joke?

Not that he's fully spelled out what he was referencing, I sensibly chuckled. Thank you for helping us out Chris.

Shout out to this Bob supporter that I'm pretty sure wasn't sure what he was saying.

Not to get too off topic but these recent posts about Michael Bay remind me of this video.

And to pivot back to this thread, there are so many other film critic YouTube channels that are much better at their craft than Bob.

Every Frame a Painting is what Bob wishes he could be.

I'm reading through bob's blog right now and something happened between 2006 and 2007 that really hyper-charged his genocidal beliefs and becoming another politicized movie reviewer.

Oops, I just found another gem. This one about "resident evil 5" .
AUGUST 2007
"The blogger flipping her lid over RE5 is doing to exact OPPOSITE of that. What’s the game about? Why is this guy the good guy? What’s going on? She apparently doesn’t care. She sees only race, digs no deeper, and that’s that. Do I “get” why she might be initially “piqued” by the trailer? Sure I do. But the incidental reminder of negative events doesn’t excuse or justify lazy analysis. Even of video-game trailers."
if nobody finds anything definitive, I'm going to go out on a super turbo spergy limb, and posit that the future Blobbo expected in 2006 that he assumed from Transformers Season 3 (after Transformers: The Movie which took place in 2005) didn't come to pass and he is sulking over that.

It's probably not (completely) that, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's a factor.
