i dont really care about s&box by its self but i would like the source 2 game engine to work out as that would be nice
You wont find Source 2 here, Garry ripped out essentially all of it except the renderer and bolted C# on top of everything and turned it into Unity.
So it's not really open source even though they're saying it is.
Only the C# tools are open source, not the actual engine since that's licensed from valve

Game runs like complete shit. If you don't have a high end PC from current year with 16 GB VRAM then prepare to stutter like crazy and have your GPU fans sound like an airport. No, I am not exaggerating. It actually eats 12 GB VRAM or more. And even if you join for example the Vampire Survivors ripoff gamemode the performance does not get better despite it looking like a mobile game.

I don't understand how they took Source engine which is known for being pretty lightweight and made it run worse on lowest settings than Unreal Engine on highest settings. I know it's a development build, but with how badly it runs it would require actual magic to optimize it to an acceptable level.
Same in my experience. Certain games run fine, like the dogfighting game or Triggernometry. Others, like s&box/s&box++ run kinda crappy. I've tried to play the survivors game, but it just crashes my game. Could be something with my computer, but I feel I can run a lot of things just fine.

Hopefully Valve just releases plain Source 2 themselves, but who knows how many years off that is.

I wonder if entities are really ripped out or just not exposed to c#. Might be interesting to poke around in the source code and see what's going on.

I don't think Valve ever will. Source 2 is a variable project just like source 1 was with a lot of different branches where certain games build their own feature sets rather than them being baked into the engine.

At best if we get a half life 3 modding will be supported.

Those sausage playermodels look fucking disgusting, where is the appeal?
The appeal is they're the opposite of current year culture war shit. No danger haired land whales covered in pride flags or effeminate guys with killmonger haircuts. No anime girls or hot k-pop babes. Goofy and recognizable while (hopefully) being easier to work with than a realistic model.

I'm kind of surprised by the hostility they're getting, especially when it's been confirmed over and over that there's realistic character options, and devs can import their own. Oddly enough, the realistic character games appear to have that generic asset look to them, but it's what people demand.

Yeah I don't see this becoming popular, way too many competitors nowadays (roblox, minecraft, vrchat, etc) and Garry has become an even bigger faggot in recent years means there will be a lot of restrictions and no fun allowed.
What did he do?

My main concern is it will go the way of other UGC focused games. No real content, expecting the community to pick up the slack, but never fleshing it out into a full game. Skyrim, Doom, and every other game famous for mods had a fully fleshed out base game to build on. Even Halo's forge mode had Halo proper to act as a base. This doesn't seem to have that. Maybe the sandbox mode counts, but that seems a bit slight.

If there's anything anyone specifically wants to see let me know and i'll search for it or give it a try.
Not a game mode, but I'm curious if there's stock weapons to use. I'd like to know if any of the VR stuff is good.

Hopefully Valve just releases plain Source 2 themselves, but who knows how many years off that is.
This is likely the best we'll get. Valve has no interest in building and maintaining generic tools, writing external documentation, and providing technical support. It's likely what Valve is getting out of the deal, since all those aspects are now in Facepunch's hands.

Put me in the cautiously hopeful pile. I worry this will wither like other UGC focused games. My big hope is the out of the box VR support and features will be good.

I really, really wish Garry hadn't gone with the sausage men, but I always felt like he repeatedly went against the grain when it came to Rust, and that's popular to this day. Can't really blame him for sticking to his guns when his track record is what it is.

And this....is dark descent, a very large game, seems to be emulating the souls genre. this seems to be a very in depth game relative to the others
This looks like a copy of beleaguered extraction slasher/arrower/caster Dark And Darker. The visual style is pretty easy to copy since they made it from Unity store assets.

The sausage men don't look very good, but it's good to hear there are other options. Unfortunately, using Rust as reference of how Facepunch is today, this will be microtransaction hell.

GMOD's claim to fame was the fact that everything was freely accessible with minimal curation by any central authority. I highly doubt modern day Facepunch considers this model with anything but scorn.

A redditor was banned for posting criticism and was followed by an s&box subreddit moderator after complaining on the Garry's Mod subreddit. S&box could be a community watch thread in the future.

guys don't worry about the ugly thumb playermodels i'm sure the six trillion hatsune mikus will be ported within a week

Is he genuinely fucking retarded? During the closed beta there's a store where you can buy items to wear in the game, there's micro-transactions everywhere in this. There's opportunity for level creators to profit similar to Roblox. Roblox is free to play, so is Fortnite, the two games this seems to be competing with. But now he wants $20 for a game that isn't a game it's just a platform for others to make games within. Whose actually going to buy this shit? I doubt he will get 800k players again unless there's just some killer app that makes everyone swarm to it.

Another thing I noticed, I decided to reinstall the game before it was revoked from my account and there is a server browser, but there is no way to filter by ping. And when I created a game for just sandbox, I didn't realize that it wasn't a single player session, it opened up a general lobby for ANYONE to play in. There was no obvious indicators that would happen, nor anywhere I could see for a "private" game. I don't need to connect to the fucking internet if I am just playing by myself. As I was fucking around, some random joined in and domed me with a shotgun. Great. $20 well spent according to Garry.

I got my game taken from me mid messing around in the editor lmao. I guess i'm sticking to godot.

I have not played this before but I keep seeing videos about its Steam "market" and cosmetics rather then any content about the game itself.
CS2 players investors found a new game to latch onto.

IIRC its up to the gamemode maker to decide what the lobby is going to be, which is why the sandbox gamemodes will ask before you make a new game if you want to make a server thats friends only, private, or open lobby. Most devs will just leave it as public lobbies. Its retarded.
