I'm trying to think of something, and I think what I suggested earlier, with maybe some tweaking would be somewhat successful. Basically, the retardation in A & H needs moderation, right?. Moderators burn out pretty quickly. Shit, even look at the Happenings vs the A & N Ukraine threads. The Happenings one devolved into a dumpster fire very quickly, but stabilized, the A & N one just got worse and worse, with occasional sub-threads redeeming it. Whoever started that thread couldn't even keep on top of it. Wrangling tards is a difficult and thankless job.
So lighten the load. Maybe have anyone with a join date of 2016 or earlier be in an automatic pool whenever they go to A & H there is a single thread redded and they have to mod it before they can post in the containment zone. There is enough investment in the site that by and large, they will do fair (ish) modding. Even if it's just the ability to hide posts under a this may grind your gears type situation.
Anybody has a problem with it, they have the couple of full time containment moderators to bitch to who have banhammer abilities (so make a good case against your bad temp moderator), and also stepping on bad faith moderators if they have users bitch about them enough to show vindictive or shitting up thread moderation, or the moderator selected hasn't done their job.
Also, I had only been here a couple of months and someone got mad at me and started going through all my posts negrating them. I contacted a mod. The said something like: "They're just a sped, ignore them."
Good advice.

I'd do it. I'm honestly not bothered by most of the shit retards post and I really don't see an issue with 90% of the users or posts. That last 10% really fucks things up because those same 10% get into every thread and shit all over the walls.
It's a meme forum. People take it far too seriously. A Thunderdome that I moderate would encourage constructive discussions and remind people to not take the things they read personally. Most of the crusading and shitflinging would go unchanged but the users that continue on for page after page until it devolves into name-calling need to sit in timeout. I really don't care about the occasional argument about retardedly specific semantics, only when users drag it out dig in does it become insufferable. A lot of it is actually funny and generates some discussion.
There's also a point-and-laugh dynamic going on here that ironically, most farms users seem to overlook. The people constantly crusading in AT are themselves lolcows and retards and it's frankly kinda gay that they've upset so many users that we have these threads. Just laugh at them and don't reply. All of these faggots disappear when you stop entertaining their garbage.
Baiters and people who fall for trolls would probably also get the boot (temporarily at least) if it's a consistent issue.
Soft monitoring of specific users that seem likely to do something retarded would be necessary. Highly emotional or autistic posters would have to be corralled and watched so they don't fedpost or make people cry.
Lastly, in addition to myself, there would be 2 more mods in the NA timezone, 1 in Europe, and 1 in Eastern Europe for decent coverage.
IMO, AT does not need heavy-handed moderation. It needs some culture injection and the rot needs to be cleaned. Consistent moderation to disrupt slapfights would be simple and easy to execute while making a marked difference.
Eta: and for the love of God new users only get one post per week or per month for the first little while. They can insert their two cents and then lurk.

I've only dealt with surges on another forum, and thunderdome is similar to that, people are too emotionally invested on a topic (either seriously or for trolling) yet they present themselves as rational, fair and open to discussion.
This is bullshit.
They are entrenched, unwilling to change and want to browbeat others into submission. The problem is everyone else is likely the same so its just a shouting match with more speds adding fuel to the fire.
What worked for me most of the times was to nip it in the bud, threadban for a 1-2 days for tempers to cool and make it clear that some things are better done in private messages.
Like a couple in a restaurant having an argument, fuck off and come back when you can behave.
Temporary shadowbans work too, the speds keep sperging out until they get tired withiut being none the wiser, and when people stop responding they lose steam.
The only problem I see is the type of manpower required, you'd need people who can keep up with runaway threads and visit every thread. It seems like a recipe for burnout.

Personally, first thing I'd do would be to rate limit A&H - start at one post an hour and one new thread every 24 hours and adjust the timings from there. I'd also be tempted to do this rate limiting both by account and by IP address. That alone should do a ton to help limit the contamination from terminally online r/t_d rapefugees.
Why such a harsh rate limit on thread creation? Put simply, the site really doesn't gain anything from having Cat Party constantly crawling MSM sites and looking for outrageous articles to crosspost for Kiwi Karma, and having moredumpster fires threads, in my mind, would only seem to serve to spread the jannies thinner.

look you need a moderator willing to treat the combatants in the thunderdome with the same level of aggression that they're treating each other without having them be a power hungry dickhead or someone with a moral code incompatible with the job and you need to tell people exactly what they're doing wrong with clearly defined, if subjective, rules, so that they can't play some stupid semantic game with your own words against you. if you tell them straight up that you can't hide behind the pretenses of politeness in DA THUNDERDOME and then ban them if they try and waste the moderator's time then you really won't have any problems
you only need two rules:
1) No discussions in bad faith (everything from flaming to critical theory)
2) You get banned for trying to waste people's time (this includes the moderators)

That’s more what I was getting at. Fedposting os a special level, but the rest gets really tiresome and eye rolling, and it seems people get shocked when they see that their massive right wing revolution/moment just…fizzles out.
