The Japs could have been easily starved into submission in the event that it was impossible to secure beachheads. The USAAF's aerial harbor-mining campaign and the USN's submarine blockade had basically cut down Jap rice imports from mainland and colonial Asia to zero in the months leading up to August '45, and there just was not enough domestic food production capability to satisfy their population's daily caloric intake. It might have taken maybe another 8-12 months, but it would have brought them to the threshold of unconditional surrender all the same.
