Sid Meier's Civilization

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I started playing it last night. Still trying to get the hang of the mechanics. Vastly different from the other Civs, which is a very good thing. I am really liking the new features such as the districts and polished policies.

Looks like doom stacks return, along with the cartoony leaders found in Civ IV. I'll see how this game goes and will report back.

I'm having fun, seems they learned a lot from Endless Legends success as far as city building. Also nice to see they didn't do what they've done the past few games and completely strip old features, like religion or espionage.

While I'm not a fan of the art style overall, the decision to change the fog of war from explored land from just slightly darkened tiles to a tanned cartographic sketch map is a really, really nice touch that is both visually appealing, and more importantly tells you immediately at a glance where your blind spots are.

Also appears to be a bit more to do early game during the "wait for basic buildings to build while sitting on your ass" phase, which is nice.

On the negative side, I think Sean bean was fucking drunk during this. He's slurring a bit and sounds disinterested as fuck reading the quotes.

But all in all seems good, which isn't surprising. Even Civ V at launch, which was a shitshow compared to Civ IV, was still a thoroughly enjoyable game.

That said if I don't get an XCOM2 easter egg like in V I'll be salt.

Edit: Fucking Germany just stole my barbarian hut kill after I spent 3 turns beating the piss out of the speardude in it. 3640BC, 1940AD, I don't care, I'm going D-Day on your ass Fredrick Hitler.

So to the people who've had the chance to play for a bit, what civ is best for someone who hasn't played since the version of 3 I bought at a book fair? I've been in Colorado since wednesday for a wedding and won't get back to a computer for at least another day.

On a scale of 1 to Peter Dinklage in Destiny, how disinterested is he?

I would start with 4, which is the best in the series, IMO.

Civ VI has put me in a weird place. It's improved most of Civ V's base mechanics immensely, but the turn times and AI diplomacy issues are such slogs I can't deal with it, but said improvements makes Civ V feel a little less grand.

Civ IV is of course still a favorite, but it's a different beast entirely.

So hope that they improve the AI in a patch or xpac down the line?

My favorite in the series is 2, especially with the Fantastic Worlds addon. I like the easy customization. If I want to play as a civilization that doesn't come with the game, it's easily done by renaming stuff.

Also, is it true that the Alpha Centauri colony victory is replaced with a more realistic Mars colony victory in Civ VI?

I got excited and bought the game before I checked if my computer could run it and surprise, it can't! :D

The new art style is actually a plus, well by new art style I mean the MAP and units, not the horrible freakish leaders. They seem to have taken a page from Team Fortres 2's developer book from way back in the day, where they mentioned that large, exaggerated purportions help players rapidly identify threats and different classes, something that works very well in Civ VI for units and improvements.

That said, the thing I miss from Civ IV, that V sorta recaptured with mods but never fully, was the AI's ability to sometimes just grab the player by the balls and beat the shit out of them. I've never dreaded AI in V and probably won't in VI. It's entirely down the the AI's inability to manage the 1 unit per tile system.

I'm still here playing Civ4.
One of the most hilarious things I find with this game is when you manage to have tribal villages later than early game. One of the things they can give you is a random tech which makes sense in Ancient era, but on some maps you'll find undisturbed barbarian lands ripe for conquest (such as Terra) - and they can still give you techs. I can get Astronomy, Rifling and so on that way, and one time I've managed to find one in Modern era they gave me ADVANCED FLIGHT.
It's as if you walked into an uncontacted primitive tribe in South America today and they gave you plans for faster than light travel.

I'll probably get Civ6 after all the expansions come out and it's discounted.

So, finally got around to installing the Vox Populi mod for V, and it will hold me over till VI gets expansions and a similar scope mod. Great mod, reintroduces a lot of IV's features and adds its own new ones, as well as AI fixes and other improvements. Combined with R.E.D, which is just a cosmetic mod that makes units look different depending on nation.
