Silent Hill

that subway level in sh3 is the best in the entire series imo.
It's got some great atmosphere but I always felt like it's a cunts hair from being a sewer level with all the samey looking areas and platforms. The Business Complex or whatever you want to call it was my favourite because it's more visually unique and nails what I love about the games so well: exploring dark, empty, and normally busy mundane locations.

Silent Hill 3 had a few freaky bits, but the goofy-looking monsters, the puzzles (not because of the literary knowledge requirements), and bosses, were fucking dumb. I'm convinced 3 was a lot of people's first Silent Hill game and that's why they remember it being scarier/cooler than it actually was.

Or maybe it just had the strongest atmosphere next to 4. If you're going to make such a contrarian statement, consider breaking down why you think the bosses and puzzles were dumb and it isn't just (you).

The monsters take strongly from the first game's designs since you play as Cheryl and the God inside her warps the world around her.

Speaking from having played the games as they were released, I found each installment to be an impressive improvement until finishing 3; whereupon the insane bonus costumes and weapons confirmed that Konami themselves believed the game to have no replay value. The overall quality of the franchise crashed halfway through playing 4; when it became infuriatingly clear that the rest of the game was going to be a very bad version of Iko.

Homecoming was so bad that I never touched Shattered Memories or Downpour. The only thing I expect to get out of Silent Hill 2: Current Year Edition is the schadenfreude of watching streamers' souls leave their bodies as they force themselves to play it for views, and then try to find something nice to say about it (as they did playing The Message).

I can't believe Silent Hill fans and MGS fans have been starved so much they don't even have expectations OR standards anymore because if they all voiced their opinion their franchise would go back to being dead. Same goes for every franchise now I guess. And then the pampered faggy writers and shitty teams go and say we're the entitled ones. It's all so tiresome man.
I'll tell you one fuckin thing, dead or finished franchise is much better than all of the slop we are offered.

One possible final treat or FUCK KONAMI I can give you folks is the true Silent Hill followup we never got by Team Silent, they listened to fan feedback and were working on Shadows, presumably reusing a rejected SH3 script for SH5 and likely more if they weren't shitcanned by Konami. This sounds INFINITELY more original and cool compared to what we ended up with in 2006-2012 and now.

Genuinely, when was the last time you played 3? I'm not being purposefully contrarian. I was very, very excited for the game and felt let down by it. The game's atmosphere was great, but that doesn't make it a great game. I truly loved some of the set-pieces and think they're some of the most memorable in the series, I just wish the whole game was more consistent with its scare factor.

You don't have to explain the lore to me or the story. I know it is a continuation of SH1. I also think that's why SH3 feels weak because SH1 wasn't a great game. I didn't like the enemy designs in either of them. SH3's enemies are bubbly, non-threatening, and being aware of the symbolism doesn't make them any creepier. Do I really have to explain to you why the bosses were dumb? They suffer form the same issues as the enemies, except they entirely break up the flow of the game. They should've been cut out completely, maybe apart from the final boss (which is also a boring slog).

My dislike of the puzzles boils down to the nonsensical items. Heather picks up the stupidest shit and incorporates it into puzzles later like she has some sort of clairvoyance. I chalk it up to that obtuse Japanese game design, but it wasn't nearly as silly in the other SH titles.

Konami managed to fool me once; with MGS V and P.T. piquing my interest - then it unceremoniously killed both franchises just to spite Kojumbo. Any superficial efforts to revive either series after having publicly unearthed them to piss on their corpses and re-bury them upside-down will signify only Konami's continued desperation for money. Pretending to love what it killed makes that company a joke in the industry.

What? You don't like depressingly greedy and out of touch pyramid head pizza box costumes for James "Pillow Man" Sunderland? How dare you. Next you'll be telling me Maria should be sexualized more because that's actually her character, you evil bigot!!

Genuinely, when was the last time you played 3?
Quite literally, only a few weeks ago on PCSX2 at native res with a CRT filter. It isn't the best one to me but I think people give it a lot of shit for nothing given that it has genuine gameplay and otherworld improvements over 1 and 2. I only noticed the take on /v/ and from staunch SH2 dickriders. The bosses were fine, did you play on harder modes or something? I can't blame you if you already dislike SH1 and its art, but 3 is a really good followup and ties up the town's story. Of course I do tick off points since it does not have multiple ending routes since it was likely rushed or too linear of a story to give alternate takes of and I can understand if people prefer SH1 and SH2's more open approach to the map whereas with 3 its mostly linear start to finish so theres less secrets and such.

Also "SH1 wasn't a great game"
Idk, felt a lot better than RE on the ps1 and was pretty advanced for a ps1 game. I don't even need to bring up that its still the bestselling one and began it all. I guess my checkboxes for good Silent Hill games are different, I love 1-4 (of course, only half of 4).

This is without exageration what they needed to do following 4, in my opinion. Even today, i believe there's an audience just waiting for something similar to this "Scary Daytime" concept they mention.

Reminds me of what they did with 3's opening and 4's first half when youre inside your apartment; You're in the middle of the day, everyone around you is going on through their daily, but something isn't checking out. And i'm not talking about internet shit ala "Someone keeps staring at you, SMILING!!!", but that sort of subtle thing like when you first take control of Heather in the women's restroom, and its implied that someone else is using one of the stalls, but they never come out, or even answer more than once.

It's not a jumpscare, it's not exactly meant to be scary by itself, but it's offputting enough for your brain to find it unsettling. Helps a lot that the setting itself looks wonderfully eerie with the harsh sunset illuminating the place.

Seriously, i dont wanna come across as dick sucking Team Silent too much, but art direction like this *had* to have more than five minutes of thought put into it. They couldve easily just turn the lights off and have some bulb flickering on and off like many horror hacks do.

While i'm sperging about lights here's another shot from SH3

This room *sickens* me. It looks disgusting. I would rather be anywhere else but there. And i fucking love it.

I could go on and on, but im starting to ramble here. TLDR: This Silent Hill: Shadows project was the best way to follow up a franchise that had already reached it's peak.

I feel like its one of the less memorable ones especially in 3 which has some of the creepiest moments in any video game.

Its funny you say that the series is really good at making you never comfortable and finding solace in terrible places by comparison. That room is well lit at least so in a weird way its a breath of fresh air. Another weird thing you might find comfort in is anytime there's enemies around, when they're not around you're isolated in total silence and darkness with the bizarre soundtrack and ambient noises putting you on edge instead. Its a strange paradox where the noise from the radio thats supposed to indicate danger is almost calming because you're not left to the unknown and your brain's speculation.

This isn't as true in 3 though because the Radio emites a ton of weird noises instead.

Honestly, as much as I love 3 it still gets knocked down a bit by the highs and lows of sound direction for me. For every moment like the beginning to the Hilltop Centre where (similar to 2's horse galloping in the hanging yard) you can hear this out-of-place ultra high fidelity sound of something heavy being dragged around above you and it's just perfect, there are terrible, deliberately grating noises and sound effects just bombarding you almost constantly without letting you absorb the environments. I know SH1 did something similar and a lot of the soundtrack is abrasive to say the least but without doing any research whatsoever my hazy recollection is that things were a bit more restrained in it compared to 3.

The twisty flying bois and slurpers are so obnoxious it feels like some sort of meta, fourth wall breaking design.

I adore the way they deliberately hide some sound effects to areas you have to be in at least staring with 2 and ending with 4 maybe.
Like if you go up the hotel stairs early you'll hear Mary scream "James!" Only once. In 3 there are a fuckton of them like the subway. The pendulums in 3 are supposed to be annoying and their design is disturbing enough to where you can imagine them making that horrible rusty creaking noise, it still creeps me the fuck out to where I deliberately avoid them, I think if they functioned like SH4 ghosts who could actually fly more and drain your health when they get close, it'd be way scarier.

Turn off the radio you'll realize a lot of it is the new alien noises it makes. But its very clear that part of 3's sound (and visual) design are about overwhelming the player's senses till it becomes physically tiring. Its deliberate sensory overload and it fits well with the constant discomfort of headaches and morning sickness Heather's feeling.

Compare to 2 which is far more subdued because James is depressed. This fits with the fact that the world reflects the psyche of the people experiencing it as well. That's why 1 and 3 are all blood and indicernable gore while 2 is rotting and moldy. The way James sees the hotel at first mirrors his refusal to accept the past as its otherworld form is just the reality of its state after burning down.

I will say that while 3 does it constantly 1 picks and chooses specific rooms to be screeching with anger/agony.

I imagine Akira Yamaoka getting promoted to the role of Producer on 3 & 4 had something to do with it. Fewer people to hold him back from going a bit ham.

Its bizarre to me how many of these arent well documented. Like which ones are random, which ones are director's cut/greatest hits changes and which ones just have wonky triggers. Like the apartment ghost whispers in SH2 I think theyre guaranteed in DC/GH but random (or maybe buggy) in the original. But it seems all sources say its DC only.
