Well, just be thankful kids prefer TTG! over gay space rocks, more than anything - even if TTG! is only really good to that core audience, but whatever. The way I see it, this show is begging to be given the boot with all of its issues (whether in writing, or as specified here, art/animation decisions.) fostered onto it, IMHO of course.
I think part of the reason is that kids don't really give a shit about Steven Universe. Most of the people I see praising it are older teens and ADULTS, not little kids. I think part of the reason is because even though Steven is the main focus and the age range the show is supposed to aimed at, it doesn't really offer kids anything. All they do is talk and SAY things will happen but nothing ever does. Does that mean that more dramatic shows have NEVER worked for kids?
Well, no. Jem did well with its core demo back in the 80s but it had a lot more to go with it on top of the drama since Jem is basically a soap opera with music. It had;
*Catchy music
*Bright colors
*Toys
*Stories that actually went from point A, B, and finally C.
Even My Little Pony has more attention than Steven Universe with kids and that's because stuff actually happens in the show. Even as much as people dislike TTG, STUFF HAPPENS that kids will actually pay-attention to. SU doesn't do that; it tries REALLY HARD to emulate the look and feel of a show from the 80s but in the end it just can't cut it and in the end it sort of robs itself of an identity. Tumblrites and SJWs hipsters will like it because they want to sound and look cool for reference anything from the 80s and 90s but if you took that away, if you took away the bad songs, you're really left with nothing. The whole appeal to the show is that the characters might be fucking each other which no little kid gives a shit about, at least to the point that Tumblr is obsessed with. I think Jem had more people run the risk of being killed in the first 12 episodes than Steven Universe has had in all 4 seasons. People in general, no matter their age, just like being engaged and having something exciting to look at.
What I find so funny though is that the crew always talk about how big of anime fans they are, especially action anime or magical girl series. If Steven Universe actually took a NOTE from these series rather than just trying to copy their pretty colors they would have put more focus on the ACTION part of those series. Sailor Moon is BEAUTIFUL but you know what else it is? ACTION PACKED. Every episode had a fight and battle even mixed in with the normal, every-day sections that were seen. Revolutionary Girl Utena is the same. And Steven Universe PRESENTED itself as a series where there would be a lot of space fights and battles but it took THIS LONG to get PART-WAY there. If there had actually been some ACTION put into this series from the start I can bet you more kid would be into it because they would have something to look at.
Hell, you want to know a series that get the whole 'powerful female PoC fighting crime' thing RIGHT and looks good? Miraculous Ladybug, a show which is slowly picking up more steam here in the states while being popular as hell in its country of origin. You'd think this would be a show we'd hear SJWs praising more about but there's that discrepancy again; the series already has a POC female lead (Asian), will gain MORE PoC heroes in the next season, has those moments of down time where they take on human problems and such. Everything they complain about lacking in a show is there for them so their need to complain has been squashed. The only thing they could complain about is Marinette being skinny but the show actually has body diversity in the cast and they're all fingering themselves over Adrian.
tl;dr- Steven Universe is boring as SHIT to kids hence the ratings are in the tank. They don't care.

Well, Dobson likes it...

Have this for a thought; remember those How to Draw Cartoon and Anime books? I lived on those as a kid but even then, EVEN THEN, I noticed how WONKY and bad the final art was in those books and forever I could not figure out why. My work isn't perfect, I will admit that now, but a few days ago I suddenly realized WHY those guides, while offering some decent advice in things, still had really weird looking anime characters and cartoons.
It was because it was like they were taking bits and pieces from 'general anime look' and just slapping it together and the result wasn't something that didn't look as polished as a lot of professionals many artist look up to. You mentioned style; I feel style IS important so we can actually DIFFERENTIATE work and creators but the SJW/Tumblr 'style' doesn't do that because they're so blinded to LOOK EXACTLY LIKE whatever is the flavor of the month they just take the 'basic' look and keep doing that and doing that without developing anything of their own along the way.
The reason why those American anime guides look like shit (other than the person not being able to draw) was because they followed every CLICHE of anime and just slapped it on there without considering that even anime/manga styles cycle not just through artist but through the decades. Akira Toriyama's work doesn't look the same as Rumiko Takahashi's as her work doesn't look like Yuji Iwahara as his work doesn't look like Gosho Aoyama and even THEIR work has changed over the years as they continued to work and draw. Look at Toriyama from the start of his career and NOW. He's kept some themes that make his art his own but you can see where it has changed.
SJW art just adheres more to an ideal and a lot of rules that they act like you can't break otherwise your work is problematic. You really aren't allowed to experiment and exaggerate because they have this idea that everything has to be 'realistic' yet their work often results in lumpy looking characters with EXTREMELY unrealistic looks. There is nothing realistic about SJW art other than them saying that because they draw 'lips' or a character a little heavier it is 'real' and therefor BETTER.
IT'S NOT.
Even manga/anime has a WIDER range of looks while sticking to certain structures that have changed over the years. Hell, Western animation does as well but where SJW fails at is just as I and a lot of people have mentioned; they PURPOSELY set up rules and actively DISCOURAGE going outside the norm and pushing boundaries, one of the battles cries Progressives constantly scream. Anything that doesn't fall in that line of being safe isn't seen as good, inoffensive art.
That and they want the bar lowered so their work can be praised despite it being of shit tier without going through the effort of experimenting but OH WELL.
I hate to almost fucking ask... But has anyone tried to do this BS with Star Vs. The Forces of Evil, like they have Steven Universe? If so, that's admittedly just as sad, knowing there are far better styles out there to try and learn than either (at least, IMHO - but SU's art-style sucking ass is clear-as-day FACT, however.).
I dunno, guys. Pearl from the SU pilot looked even worse than in the normal show.

Really? I thought that was just a bad David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust caricature (with apologies to Bowie). Though I remember Amethyst (and Steven himself) being fatter and more broad-faced in the pilot and that's about as Tumblr as you can get.I dunno, guys. Pearl from the SU pilot looked even worse than in the normal show.

I agree on that. Her new look is prettier. As for the show, I have a feeling that a number of the kids are forced to watch it by SJW parents/caregivers.I dunno, guys. Pearl from the SU pilot looked even worse than in the normal show.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, Cartoon Network doesn't air SU much (preferring TTG!, The Amazing World of Gumball [which, yes, does have Tumblr fans (though, considering that one episode they did where Gumball becomes a social justice warrior, that's probably on Tumblr's shitlist now), but they're the typical ones that do fan-art, fanfiction, and shipping...all of which have been made fun of on at least three episodes], and maybe OK KO: Let's Be Heroes, since that's Steven Universe as an actual fun cartoon with stuff happening every episode) and Cartoon Network's upcoming crop of shows seem to be made to appeal to actual kids instead of 20-somethings with Peter Pan Syndrome.Yeah, I really don't know why people, particularly artists, have such a hard-on for SU- ever since syndication, it's been burdened by an unending string of bad decisions. Bad airing schedule, bad animation process, bad art style change, bad management of boarders, etc.
Loser
Blur (a British britpop boy band from the 90s)
I think SU will be one of those shows that after its over and several years have pass by, people will feel more comfortable talking about how problematic and bad the show was. People would feel more comfortable tearing it all down and saying that the fandom is one of the worst ever.
To the point that its no longer cool to like SU.
Kind of like what happened to twilight and to a lesser extent, harry potter.
The sad thing is that SU has had the potential to appeal to kids, it just seems that every time the opportunity arises the crew deliberately chooses the execution that is least likely to.Steven Universe biggest flaw is it's non stop hiatus mixed with boring filler that makes it impossible for any kid to get invested. This last hiatus lasted for like six months until they dropped 5 episodes a few days ago and NOTHING HAPPENED. Kids do not care about a random citizen mundane struggles or Steven's drama with Connie (who only exists to be his love interest). If my 13 old brother is watching CN and SU starts, he grabs the controller and switches to nickelodeon because he would rather watch a spongebob episode he already saw than this.
Miraculous Ladybug is such a generic magical girl cartoon but it's just much more fun to watch than other shows, it's crazy popular in Brazil and even boys like it because every episode has a unique cool villain and a lot of action.
She's the only thing I don't like in the pilot but you could argue that monkey nose is better than extreme (((normal white person))) nose.I dunno, guys. Pearl from the SU pilot looked even worse than in the normal show.

Take that episode Kiki's Pizza Delivery Service: the basic premise - going into someone's dreams to fight nightmares- is one that has been done in kids' shows before with success. It opens the door for a lot of action and creative imagery that would grab a kid's attention. But what did SU focus on instead? Talking about sister issues in the real world, with the actual dream stuff only being a small fraction of the episode content. Of course kids are gonna be turned off by the show, all the elements that would've drawn them in have been relegated far off on the sidelines in favor of fanfiction-esque hurt/comfort bullshit.
SU just exists in a perpetual state of:
