I have to agree that Miraculus Adventures of Ladybug and Cat Noir is the best cartoon for kids right now and it shows in popularity. It's just... everything FUN with kids shows from lats 35 years packed together and it is not trying to be "orginal" or "edgy" or "artsy". And humor is not 99% "omg, pop-culture or obscure pop-culture reference!". And because of that it IS orginal in modern cartoon landscape dominated by comedies or dramedies drawn in very simplistic "cal-arts" style. It's action cartoon with good, complex 3D graphics in an era, where action cartoons and more realistic character designs are really rare.
And diversity is not forced, let's take a look on main character's class:

I think it's quite realistic for modern Paris. Most of students are white, but it's still pretty multicultural. And kids look like their race, not that ambiguous brown tumblr designs.
and plus-sized girl Mylene is actually cute (despite her mismatched colour palette):

Miraculous is very popular, but because it's 3D it's a lot harder for young artists to copy it's style. But it's disney-ish face proportios and actually cute designs would be a lot better as "this style everybody young imitate" than SU. Yeah, everybody coping the same thing is annoying, but this or even anime craze are a lot better basics. Anime at least have mostly realistic bodies so people coping it have to became interested in learning anatomy sooner or later.

It funny because pink was originally male's color one point of time because it's association with red and red is strong color. While blue was female color because it relation with the Virgin Mary. Oh time has change.

Cartoon always has pop culture (maybe more during 90s and early 2000s) however, it always from the past generation so kid will never get it but the adults will. Good memorable cartoon knows how balance and cater to both audience. Problem with Steven Universe's pop culture is that it's still relevant to new generation and as well the fact that writers of SU are basically around our age. They don't know how to cater more than one audience.

Remember there was one episode in miraculous ladybug, the videos game ep. where they did obvious Street fighter reference. It did bug me a bit but it didn't ruin it for me.

I prefer obscure over obvious pop culture because it requires you to be creative and it not in your face half of time. Obvious pop culture is very difficult to execute and comes out of nowhere at times.

Take that episode Kiki's Pizza Delivery Service: the basic premise - going into someone's dreams to fight nightmares- is one that has been done in kids' shows before with success.

I've seen Ladybug but not Lolirock and by the looks of both, the French really know how to make cartoons. It's basically anime. And I say that, not just because they know how to imitate the style (without soulessly carbon copying it), but also because they seem like clearly passionate people who take their influence from many things (Japan included) to create something that isn't pushing an agenda. And now that I think about that, this is probably the discrepancy I see between something like Ladybug and American cartoons (it's all been said here, the inbred Cal Arts meme style, hiring from that blue hugbox etc).

I enjoy Ladybug and like it quite a bit, but I've gotta admit that the writing is pretty damn awful at points, especially when it comes to the super cliche rich blonde mean girl stereotype.
The 3D animation is incredible for a TV show, and I quite like the Cat Noir/Adrien and Ladybug /Marionette love square thing, but it's honestly not a super great show writing wise. It is fun to watch, though, and the artstyle is cute, so I'll give it that.

Actually, yes, I do draw. I never said that her leg proportions were weird, I just said that the design is ugly. Where did you get complaints about her legs from my post?

It's nothing special, just a good show for kids that don't try to be something more like Steven Universe. And is free of annoying trends characteristic for tumblr art.

When it comes to European animation, there was no major anime boom here in late 90s/early 2000s, but animes were present in TV since 70s, next to other cartoons. France has a long history of co-productions made with Japan. I think they treat anime differently than American viewers, not like something hot and special and "so mature" but normal thing. Nobody is crazy about "anime references" or "anime influence", it's standard since 80s and Mysterious Cities of Gold and Ulysess 3000.
And about pop culture references, it's hard to explain, I was writing about this Steven Universe style of them and overusing this as source of humor. I like how they are handled in Ducktales or Gravity Falls.

I could rant about how America (and the English speaking world)'s view of anime is kind of screwed up due to how late we got it compared to the rest of Europe, the Middle East, the rest of Asia - just about everywhere else, really. But that's off-topic and you summed it up pretty well.

I can't remember if I mentioned it in this thread or not (I probably did) but I did mention something along the lines how I hated the crew going back and forth between explaining the genders of the Gems and saying they 'had no gender' despite them being voiced by women and drawn like women (even the ugliest ones). Pilot Pearl, as fucked as her nose is, is what I was talking about creating a character where you couldn't tell what gender they are. Amethyst and Garnet you still can but Pearl was what they SHOULD have aimed for if they really wanted to create a genderless world. Aside from the nose, stupid looking feet and static pose you CAN'T tell what Pearl is supposed to be. The clothes have no indication, the colors have no indication and THAT'S the sort of theme that matches the idea of aliens who do not have body biology that align with those of humans 100%. Add in actually having the gems be voiced by men and women and you would have created that world where you're not supposed to be able to tell who is what and so on. Current SU is basically just about all-female alien bitches melodrama where you eventually forget there is a dilemma going on because we need ANOTHER episode to talk about our feelings. This is like The Get Along Gang for 18-35 year olds. JESUS CHRIST.

And we know cartoons aren't made by robots Ian but from what you and the rest of Cartoon Network are showcasing, they are made by a bunch of dipshits who still seem to struggle on the basics of good character design and continuity.
