Why's self loathing a bad thing? Its brought up often on this site. But I think lots of people are self loathing. It's not a bad thing.

There is a lot of humor to be had in ironic self-loathing. A lot of comedians rely on it.

But when it comes to actual, earnest self-loathing, it's not healthy; don't mistake it for being humble or mildly self-effacing.

It speaks to a pathologically poor self-image, poor-self esteem and can negatively impact one's social and professional life in extreme ways. It also leads to lots of self-defeating behavior as the self-loathing person tries to harm themselves (not just physically) and torpedo their own happiness because deep down, they hate a part of/all of who they are and want to pass up obvious avenues for happiness at best or become extremely self-destructive at worst.

In short, rather than working towards bettering themselves and overcoming or mitigating their flaws, as most reasonably well-adjusted people try to, the self-loather will instead try to destroy themselves because they feel on a fundamental level that they are broken or ruined or not worth life/love/success.

Go look at the various Rat Kings and the self-destruction they engage in. These are gay men who are classic examples of self-loathing.
