>Modern Xbox isn’t worth it because them becoming a platform means there’s no incentive to buy an Xbox console specifically
>Modern Playstation isn’t worth it because their games are low-quality live service
>Modern Nintendo isn’t worth it because… the non-modern games are less convenient to play?

One of these is not like the others.
They're not gaming PCs.

A good reason to shit on Nintendies is their lack of willingness to revisit old classics via Emulators. There fixed it for you.

What I'm saying is with the directions these console manufacturers are going, I don't see the value of obtaining a PS5, 6, 7, Xbox handheld or such from the next generation. My Series X is JUST useful because I have a backlog of Xbox games and a ten year old Xbox Live account. Oh, and the SSD aiding with faster load times.

A ton of the games that released in this generation would work on the PS4.
Considering how much of what was released this Gen was ALSO released on the PS4 anyway - whether due to how long shits been in development for or the various studios realizing that sticking to the PS5 would never make them their money back is up in the air - I think we can safely say that this console Gen is an unmitigated disaster for Sony.

Shit on Microsoft or Nintendo as they're also owed, the former at least seems to be getting ready to pivot away from hardware, considering the success of GamePass. Nintendo just doing its own thing seems to work wonders keeping them insulated from the rest of the industry being retarded.

Unless Sony and MS release 150 bangers between now and next year, there is no so far. The generation is over, it was terrible.

This is part of the reason why I went PC. There's literally no reason to own a console (even though I have a PS5) anymore. Everything's coming to one platform or another. I play a lot of older games on my current rig, but I plan on building a newer one at the start of next year so I can start buying some of the games I have on my PS5 on PC. A lot of newer games make my 5 year old rig pant a bit, so having something a bit newer will help infinitely.

The PC market would've definitely gotten larger if it wasn't for poor optimization and video card shenanigans due to AI bs.

You can already spend two or three hundred bucks on a GPU that plays everything if you don’t care about raytracing (and maybe even if you do). I truly believe Valve releasing their Steam Deck Home Console Edition™️ will open the floodgates for the average consumer at least strongly considering PC gaming.

I wonder if things would get worse for gaming should that come to pass, in hindsight.
Seems as every 'leap' or increase in technology since 2006 has been a monkey's paw to real gamers and the quality of games, I think PC gaming being the last bastion should be defended at all costs.

Imagine modern-day console fags whining about how hard it is to install games on PC. They would normify it and ruin it within a generation.

Maybe we should be flocking to Linux, just in case.

I don't believe either of these will be the case. "Fremont", just like the Steam Deck before it, is going to be sold exclusively (outside of Asia) on the Steam storefront and there will be no marketing or ad campaign as other devices aimed at a mainstream audience. It'll be a niche product aimed at a dedicated enthusiast audience. It'll make it easier to engage with PC gaming in the living room but it won't cause a dramatic growth, it'll just make that number of concurrent gamer on Steam to grow just a bit bigger and perhaps push the number of Linux users growth an entra 0.2%.

That's the crux of the matter, it is going to be a SteamOS device, and as much as Proton has made playing Windows games on Linux a reality, there is still a key component missing, the willingness of online multiplayer game developers to make anti-cheat compatible with it.

Not the Steam Deck, nor "Fremont" will ever appeal to an average consumer because the games average consumers play don't work under Proton: Fortnite, Call of Duty, Roblox, FIFA, NBA, GTA Online, Valorant, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Rust, etc, that's a long list of mainstream titles missing that would be a definitive deal breaker for the average consumer..

PC will remain the last bastion of what would be considered "enthusiast gaming" because it is an open platform and the concept of tinkering, modding and tweaking settings, files, bios, etc is always going to be a part of it.

As for "getting worse for gaming", we are already there thanks to the scummy practices of the mobile market spreading to the rest of the industry.

It's almost like, it isn't a coincidence that normiefag games don't work on Linux. Though it's a blessing in disguise if the Steambox dropped and became popular.

The funny thing is, MS et al must be shitting their pants knowing the decimation of windows gaming is one popular piece of hardware away. If the Steambox was a console, with free online, cheaper games and better specs due to lack of scummy Microsoft-bloat-ad-spy-marketingware, while supporting a plethora of PC games that console players haven't had the chance to play and mods, then Sony and MS are fucked.

A £350 linux console in this environment selling games at £40 would change the face of the console industry for the better.

I'm gonna throw a 7800 XT in my new rig.
