solely design a game based off their individual preferences
Which wouldn't be an issue, since many of the most popular games out there were made based solely on the specific preferences of the developer(s). There's nothing wrong with such an approach as long as it resonates with audiences. As an example, the developer of Stardew Valley became a multimillionaire overnight simply because his vision of a Harvest Moon game hit close to what the rest of the fanbase wanted.
I think the issue with Sony's approach to game development is the worst of both worlds. On the one hand many of their games are designed by committee, and the committee is apparently staffed with mouthbreathers, so you get boring, politically correct slop like Spider-Man or Concord.
On the other hand their "auteurs" are freaks whose individualistic tastes not only fail to resonate with a wider audience, but actively repulse them.
Say what you want about Kojima and his quirks, but at least people are always going to be interested to see what he'll make next. On the other hand Druckmann is just met with derision and scorn because everyone sees him for what he is, a neurotic, seething Jewish goblin that wants to subject the gentiles to his sexual frustrations/fetishes and hatred.
Which, again, wouldn't be an issue if these weren't the three to four exclusive games, costing as much as Hollywood blockbuster, that Sony needs to sell well, and more importantly, make people want to buy their console for.
they are seemingly releasing stuff on a semi-regular basis when that would have not been the case at all 10 years ago, a lot of Microsoft's problems revolves around no one wanting their hardware,I think that they would have gone full PC by now if not for some people being unable to afford gaming PCs
They do release lots of games, but it's obvious most of their studios are severely mismanaged and rudderless, constantly missing deadlines and underdelivering. I think id is pretty much the only studio of theirs that shows any degree of professionalism and passion.
Let's not forget that Microsoft have allowed 343 to utterly destroy Halo over the span of a decade. 343 made it abundantly clear they are shitlids, that they hate Halo, the Halo fanbase, guns and violence, yet none of these very public statements were interpreted as a clear warning by MS.
And yes, nobody is buying their consoles because most of the games they have on offer are shit. Neither them nor Sony have yet managed to come up with a few killer exclusives that would make people want to buy their dogshit consoles.
