there hasn't been a new game for a decade
This may be a bigger issue than Rockstar imagines.

Looking back on Rockstar games, the formula really hasn't evolved all that much going from 3 to RDR2 - the graphics are prettier, the map is bigger, there's more simulationist elements, but you're still not able to go off script on missions, get creative or make significant choices during the narrative.

For all Rockstar likes to tout about freedom, their games are incredibly constrictive, both in terms of gameplay and narrative. You will play the mission the way the writers intended you to play it, you will follow along the linear narrative they set out for you, and no side content you complete will impact the main storyline in any shape or form.

Rockstar has been pretty content to sit on their laurels and let the momentum of their past achievements carry them on to success.

Meanwhile, much like Bethesda discovered that people have moved on from Skyrim the hard way, I imagine that Rockstar will discover that people aren't as easily amazed with their open world shenanigans as they were a decade prior.

Going from GTA IV to V, there was still a noticeable increase in graphical fidelity, but I doubt we'll be seeing that much of an increase between concurrent GTA clones and VI.

Also, for all the shit CDPR got for Cyberpunk (rightfully, mind you), the game was still a significant evolution of the GTA formula. Not only did the game allow you to approach many missions in whatever way you saw fit, but it also had RPG-esque build variety, and narrative choices and consequences (or at least the illusion thereof).

And what's worse for Rockstar, it wasn't some niche title only played by a handful of autists, but one of the most purchased games ever.

Just like popular RPGs that game after Skyrim raised expectations among the people for whom Skyrim was the first RPG, so will Cyberpunk 2077 have raised expectations of what a GTA clone should be in the 2020s for many costumers.

I am not particularly confident that Rockstar was taking notes. I imagine GTA VI will be more of the same - linear narrative and linear storytelling, and a glut of useless "immersive" content and annoyances, with Rockstar touting watching TV in their game and enterable interiors as some sort of impressive feat.

I find it particularly funny how all the posts about PS3 having no games have aged even finer than evergreen, being more applicable now than they were at the time.
(Back in the day on /v/ there were some PS3 has no games parody song posts which have now been reignited with the PS5).
"ONE GAME" is another certified hood classic.

For me, GTA6 is on a knife's edge. It will either succeed and will become the new standard (whatever that could mean) or fail and cause a mini-crash. If there is a safe bet, it is a new GTA. However, as things are now, even this throne shakes. The budget is too high and so are the expectations. If the price is too much, if the game is too woke, if there is another game that gets memed around the time and overshadows it even a bit (remember that every sale matters when the dev time has been eternal and the budget has ballooned to incredible heights), the game is cooked. We are watching gaming history.

You know what really irritates me? When the trigger button on my controller breaks and now I can't use it anymore because Sony went cheap when making their controllers.

As expected, Astro Bot became the PS5’s Bloodborne, aka the game fanboys won’t shut up about because it’s all they can cling onto. Even the Switch 2 with all its flaws got two great exclusives in its first six months, three if you’re being generous toward Mario Kart World.

Isn't Astro Bot just a bing bing wahoo copy that has PlayStation nostalgia-bait plastered on it? If so that's pretty pathetic even for sonytards.

Well now I am really curious what the third one is. DXD or Welcome Tour? Certainly not Metroid 4, which is also on Switch 1 and thus can't be chosen under the rules that people use to exclude PS4/5 dual launches.

edit: Oh, Kirby Air Riders? Fair enough, I can accept that.

Definitely wouldn't go that far, it doesn't really copy a whole lot from mario other than things that are almost impossible for any 3d platformer not to. Really, I'd compare it far more to Kirby and the Forgotten Land, both have a hover that makes a lot of the platforming challenges ez mode, collectibles are little characters that mosey around in your hub area after rescue from levels and build it up the more you collect, and there are setpiece powers specific to certain levels.

I think the biggest issue with astrobot is just that it's a very confused game that doesn't know what it wants to be or who it's for. Is it sony's foray into a new market, providing child and family friendly titles for the playstation? Not really, because every reference is either something too old for a kid to know or from something they're too young to be currently playing. Is it for adults nostalgic for classic playstation? Again, not really, the difficulty is basically nonexistent (my friend's 3 year old toddler enjoyed playing a level before preschool every day and had pretty much no issues) and the vast bulk of references are to their modern slop, if you're not ape escape, chances are you're getting a single bot costume hidden in a level that has nothing thematic to do with you if you're from before the ps4. I can only conclude that astrobot is a game made for people with 5+ playstation themed tattoos.

Setpiece powers specific to certain levels… so it’s Balan Wonderworld, got it :smug:

Since you mentioned Kirby, that sounds like a similar problem to Star Allies. The gameplay is too easy even by Kirby standards, but they also went overboard on lore and fanservice that only longtime fans would appreciate. It’s like it was made for people who love Kirby but are also really bad at it.

I would still agree that star allies is too easy, but kirby is definitely one of those game series that's "easy to beat, hard to complete". Astrobot is just sort of brainless though, even what are supposed to be the super duper ultra challenge levels are a joke. There's definitely nothing on the level of morpho knight, barely even whispy woods.

They didn’t just backed themselves in a corner, they’re taking the entire gaming industry with them. Sony will likely be the most affected after Take Two. Their PlayStation 5 Pro is likely an iterative half step compared to the PS5 with diminishing returns at the cost of a mid range PC. It’ll take a miracle to jump back from their boneheaded decisions with GTA VI being their Hail Mary.
Sony is the most open about their willingness to shit on consumers in terms of any company in the Video game industry, they've already implied that they are not about making good games but about selling people shit, and GTA VI isn't even an exclusive, they only have themselves to blame for the rise of PC Gaming, you can already buy basically all of the multiplats and even games that Sony makes on steam, yes PC has a higher up-front cost but you can do other shit on a PC and its a more open platform, honestly even im starting to think Console Gaming's days may be numbered, if not for the slightly better user friendliness with consoles they'd probably be in the ground already

Hey now, Microsoft is right there closing all their studios, getting rid of exclusives and raising the price of the console all at the same time. They truly are hard to compete with in consumer-fucking.

I think the key phrase is "open about their willingness". Microsoft will do something retarded, anti consumer, and brand destroying, and cite a whole bunch of graphs and charts as why they didn't want to do this, but they did have to do this. Sony will raise the price of the ps5 in europe and japan and then say it's to subsidize it for US tariffs so that US niggers don't have to pay more for the newest version of nba2k. They'll brag about how they moved just enough ps5 production outside of china to make the US supply of ps5s tariff-proof, and then not even a fucking week later say that they're raising prices of the ps5 in the US, and blaming tariffs. Sony will literally defend whatever the eternal progressive omnicause deems is in vogue this month and tell paying customers "cities can rebuild" when violent niggers burn them down because of a violent fentanyl addict dying of an overdose within the vicinity of a cop.

Microsoft will fuck over their customers, and at least try and say they were pushed into a corner on this one. Sony will fuck over their customers, tell them they deserved it and they'll happily do it again, and those customers will thank them.

Nobody was expecting Trump to tariff countries other than China. Then he hits Vietnam, the country production was moved to, with even higher tariffs. No fucking duh prices were gonna rise. Thats literally what a tariff is, having to give an extra payment over to the government.

they are about the same for me now, Sony is more brazenly hypocritical with the executive hypocrisy, Microsoft is just as Jewish but they dont have Herman Hulst

Sony is Jewish in spirit, Microsoft is Indian (same but less competent which is why it’s death spiraling and the brand is extremely turd-world coded now).
