Squid Game - battle Royale but adults!

Parasite comparison comes from the critique of Capitalism in South Korea, which is one of themes in Squid Game. But yeah, we can compare Squid Game to Gangnam Style as well, not only because of Capitalism critique, but also weirdness and batshit craziness.

The old man best known for being the inventor of Squid Game and dying at the end of the show after his friend turned rival won it has become the first Korean to win a Golden Globe for his performance.

Here’s his statement given from Netflix thanking everyone:

I wonder if he approached the stand like he went forward during the red light green light game.

Absolutely well deserved
I hate to be that guy, especially since I watched Squid Games and actually liked it...
but no, he really wasn't that great. I've literally never even heard the guy speak. Maybe the dude who dubbed him in English deserves some award, (even then, I'm doubtful, because I could name several other shows last year that had better supporting characters. This is just more retarded Hollywood bullshit.)

Why do American award shows, as pointless as they already are, have to give awards to non-American productions? And yeah, I'll bring up Parasite, because I watched that too, and it was over-rated, and it's relevant.

Nobody outside of Korea would ever really give a shit about a strictly Korean film/tv award show, but if they ever had one, I would bet at least a few bucks that they would never give their awards to American movies and/or tv shows. I don't see why we should have to do the same for them.

Other countries do have awards for films outside of their own country. Even then, a lot of films that came in American award shows are made in other english speaking countries that have as much dominance so awards shows were never exclusively American.

Besides that, you are a genuine fucking moron for watching Squid game's english dub as it is literally one of the worst dubs of anything out there.

You're probably correct that it's a bad dub, but I don't fucking speak Korean and I have no reason to ever learn it.
Having to devote half of your attention to reading subtitles while somebody speaks a language that you do not, sucks ass every single time. This is also true for every single anime I've ever watched.

Alright, you call me a moron for watching the dub. Unless you're actually Korean (or can at least understand Korean), I'm calling YOU a moron for watching a show in a language that you do not speak, with subtitles that are probably not even particularly accurate, especially if they're a direct translation. I'm no expert, but I know for a fact that there were some things that didn't properly translate in the Squid Game dub and I bet it was the same for the sub, just off the top of my head, 'babe'.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, it's pretty fucking stupid to voluntarily watch a piece of media in a language that you do not speak, especially when you have alternatives in a language that you do.

I think you assume that reading subtitles takes a lot of attention, which is not true for many viewers. Especially non-native English speakers, who often don't have any other choice and watch almost everything with subtitles.

Subtitles do not even take a lot of attention. Also dubs are infamously more inaccurate than subtitles. A good example of which is especially in modern anime where the writer's put in lines that do not fit at all with shit in the original (i.e. Putting in a reference to gamergate). Also not everything is dubbed, but watching foreign media is somehow stupid despite the fact you're probably illiterate if subtitles hurt your brain.

As someone who did a lot of fansubs back in the day: from technical point of view you can simply squeeze in more meaning into subtitles. People read faster than speak and preparing lines which have to be read by actors requires a different approach to translating.

I honestly don't give a shit whether it is "more accurate," believe it or not, I often watch anime while doing other things. That is significantly easier to do that when you actually understand the language that they're speaking.

True story, I'm currently watching an anime where the English dub actively and demonstrably ruins many of the (ironically mostly originally English-based) references. And yet I still prefer that to watching it in a language I don't actually speak. I'm not a weeb, I just sometimes unironically enjoy weeb shit.

If it makes you feel better, I've been watching it in English also with subtitles on to occasionally see what the "more accurate" translation should have been. That makes infinitely more sense to me than watching it in a language that I don't understand.

The anime is Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure if you were curious.

While I do congratulate the actor on his win, I feel like his role was helped significantly more by the writing twisting audience expectations against them rather than his performance on its own standing out from the crowd. By the time we get to his final act, there's nothing particularly amazing about his acting overall. Because everyone in the main cast does a fucking bang up job from start to finish, Oh Young-Soo included.

Still, I can't wait for this to stir up some more play fights in the industry. More Asian-American actors feeling assaulted and threatened by Korean and Japanese entertainment (and Chinese actors) because African-Americans don't have to compete with Africans from Africa, why do they have to compete with born and bred in Asia Asians? And why isn't this jointly increasing their salaries and work opportunities?

Reviving this dead thread because I want to talk about the show.
I'm really excited and have very high expectations for the show, but I've watched the last few trailers and my excitement is a bit low. On a superficial level it feels like a bunch of recycled ideas from the first season, the characters shown don't look very interesting either, I'm not going to talk about troon because I have faith that he will die soon and his focus on web news is to get people to talk about the show, what do you think? Are you excited for this second season? What are the things you would like to see?

There's gonna be a troon? Well, so much for that show. I don't even like seeing these creatures on Null's podcast, I'm not going to tune in for a goddamn Korean tv show if I'll be subjected to that.

I feel like Season 1 should've been a one and done thing but the next two seasons I am willing to give it a shot since they already have an endgame.

However the way this show has been milked by Western entertainment is honestly cringeworthy and has the same energy as when Illumination had the Lorax advertise for cars and other junk.
