Damn, this is exactly what I want to see.
And this is exactly what I feel is going to happen.
I guess you're right, the first season showed Ali Abdul, an immigrant from Pakistan, he was one of the most beloved characters and his death was the saddest. As I said, we can only wait to see how they handle this troon character.
Ali was likable because he was a crippled worker that had gone unpaid for months after working in hazardous conditions, on the run from the law after he stole his missing wages from the boss and accidentally injured him in the process, and even then he used said wages to send his wife and child away. He also had a selfless personality rescuing gi hun in the first game despite not even knowing him and being a likable person all around. He was likeable because he had work ethic and a good moral character but was tossed into a shity sitiuation.
Compare that to:
"I'm in the game because I can't afford to cut my cock off."
In season 1, everyone was in the game because they were facing complete financial ruin, either in the form of destitute homelessness, death, or prison, either for more or less selfish reasons, but the important thing is that none of them had the option to just "walk away" from their problems. That was the point of the vote. That was the point of the organizers sharing everyone's backstory.
"Gi-hun: Hunted by loan sharks. Unless he comes up with the money by next week they're taking his eyes and kidneys."
"Sang-Woo: Mass investment fraud. Owns millions. Unless he comes up with the money he's going to prison for life."
"Ali: Breadwinner. On the run from the law. 2 Dependants. Unless he comes up with the money he's going to prison for a long time and his family is left destitute."
"Deok-su: Owns money to the mob. Will be literally skinned alive unless he comes up with the money."
"Hon: Wants to cut cock off. Can't afford it."
Most characters in squid game are the cause of their own problems (minor exceptions like ali), but hon is the only character who can also walk away from them with no reprecautions. When we see the backstories we understand why they're doing this, and why if we were in their situation, we might do the same. Even if they are fraudsters, or gangsters or whatever, the motivation of "I don't want to die/be destitute" is inherently relatable/understandable no matter what the cause is.
The motivation of "I want to mutilate myself even if the risk is death." isn't.
