I wasn't trying to defend 'democracy'. Not sure how you got that out of what I was saying. I meant that it's incredibly common to overuse political buzzwords these days for bullshit reasons, like how you see all these western politicians trying to hold up Ukraine as a sterling 'liberal democracy' meanwhile Zelensky is banning opposition parties left and right and denying that it's a corrupt mafia-state shithole. Personally I'm sympathetic to elements of the Estado Novo regime of Salazar's Portugal, hardly an example of 'democracy' in the modern (or is it postmodern?) sense.
Democracy is the rule of Demographics. These aren't just buzzwords, they're being 100% honest. You, like every other lead-brained WASP, can't grasp the concept that they aren't talking about YOUR demographic.

I heard they got a new president, though i doubt he can do much, isn't sri lanka still divided by sinhalese and tamil nationalist ? People will probably put aside their differences for now but I foresee them electing people to put in place the same policies that put them in this mess once this crisis is over

They now have a fuel pass system they're rolling out to prevent "hoarding," just like converting to organic farming wouldn't lead to a food shortage. This is some minister of fair fuel quota implementation (kidding - he's the power and energy minister). I don't think I have a Sri Lanka location on my VPN so the fuel pass website just says not authorized.

The update is that Sri Lanka's parliament elected standing president Ranil Wickremesinghe as the official new president. His term runs to 2024. He was PM like 6 times or something under the Rajapaksas, so he's seen as a Rajapaksa loyalist and protesters are mad and continue to protest. Wickremesinghe's response to this is to sick security forces on the protesters and start arresting them. Security forces literally called it a "special operation".

Let's see how long he'll stay before he pack his luggages.:story:

The funny thing is that the protesters were planning a break from protests and were supposedly going to dissolve their own camp by a certain deadline, but Wickremesinghe's guys came in and busted up their camp several hours before the deadline he had given them. So now they're gathering again to protest his heavy-handedness. Tbh, I think he's still pissy that they burned his house down. Also, I think the protests will continue if only because there's nothing for people to do but either stand all day in a line for food, stand all day in a line for fuel, or go protest. Most things are shut down because there's no fuel or money to run anything.

Probably because of shit like this:

are perceived as """solutions""" to a crisis because handling the country's resources to a large billionaire club was even considered to begin with.

At this point, I'm just fucking mystified how anything works in there. If nothing is running then... who the fuck is bringing the food in? Medicine? Spare parts?

That's easy: no one.

(India is giving some food aid/fuel credits but that's a drop in the bucket.)

Lmao, Sri Lanka is now asking China for $4 billion "aid package" plus a $1.5 billion line of credit.

Also, Ex-president Rajapaksa is allegedly "not in hiding" and will return to Sri Lanka "soon". Supposedly because he feels safe with Wickermesinghe in charge.

Give it time and they wont be able to recharge their phones. This is a total collapse back to pre-industrial level of technology and the population is going to starve to death, engage in civil war against the government while dying of starvation or flee abroad like every other refugee crisis.
