I started reading the novels after hearing about the IKS Gorkon novels earlier in this thread. I pivoted to reading the DS9 relaunch after finishing the Gorkon and have enjoyed them. I'm up to Worlds of Deep Space Nine so far. The tone's about the same as DS9, so they at least got that right.

In between I read the Destinies novels, a big crossover event in the novel-verse. The gist of Destinies is that it follows captains Picard, Riker, Dax, and Hernandex (U.S.S. Columbia from Enterprise) and explores the truth about the Borg and their aggressive incursions into Federation space. I haven't seen Picard beyond a few plot points, but if the novel writers were involved it's a big drop in quality. Adapting Destinies as-is, changing only what they have to for actor availability since nearly everyone shows up, would make a great mini series.
 
All this talk of Wes vs Jake made me wonder if anyone had done a Vrgin vs Chad template of these two. I couldn't find one, although I didn't look very hard.
Because I'd just rather go and do my own:

Wesley gets told by Picard that he's a big fucking idiot for omitting information about getting cadets killed when Jake would lie to save lives and still gets a hug from his dad

Spock and Kirk naturally want to "fix" the timeline. Commander Thelin might logically object to this: it's not exactly a "Keep Hitler from winning WWII" situation. But instead, Thelin accepts the necessity of changing the universe so he'll be relegated to God knows what (Obviously Spock and Kirk have no idea what Thelin was up to in their own timeline), because Spock will save his own mother's life and Thelin accepts Spock must do it, and it would be wrong to prevent it.

I always thought it was a shame they didn't go into this more deeply

You know, if you let me live in the Star Trek universe (pre-grimderp, that is) I would get myself a ship and putter around looking at shit forever. But my ship would be special. How?
It'd be one big holodeck! The theme can be changed. Starfleet Standard, Klingon, Vulcan, Romulan, Ferengi, the ship interior can resemble whatever I want. Hell, I could go with Victorian Steampunk or even a fucking cave if I felt like it.
Security? No problem, just turn the safeties off. The holodeck can simulate weaponry from phasers to bullets.
Crew? Several dedicated holographic characters controlled by independent AIs.

Just imagine beaming over to a ship and suddenly feeling like you stepped onto a 17th century British naval vessel but in space. It'd be awesome as fuck.

And then you hit a sun at Warp 7, cause a Holo-emitter failed and you couldn't change course.
 
This popped up in my YouTube recommendations today and I'm wondering how the fuck some random YouTuber made such a flawless Data compared to the monstrosity on Picard (that probably cost $100K). If this guy could do this, why couldn't they apply a younger Data's face to Brent Spiner?

It’s not funny, but that goes without saying. It got one chuckle out of him. It couldn’t even make me crack a smile.

Leaving aside the lack of comedy, and a long string of desperate references they dropped in the last 30 seconds, and the general incompetence of everyone on screen, there was something that left a bad taste in my mouth.

This is a very cynical, mean spirited show.

My conclusion is all centred around this guy, whose name I can’t even remember, even though he’s meant to be one of the MCs. I’m gonna call him Morty, because that’s who he fucking is:

Everyone shits on this guy. Constantly, repeatedly, and relentlessly. This is because he believes in Star Fleet’s mission, and is doing his best to try and be a worthy officer. He lacks self confidence, but at the same time is earnest in his belief that they’re out here to help people. Everyone around him treats him with contempt at best, and utter disgust at worst. This includes that other MC, who I shall call Black Rick, because that’s who she is. Near the end of the episode she makes him agree with her that she is his moral, physical, intellectual, and just general superior in every way.

Let me just get Black Rick out of the way: she is abusive, violent, unstable, unbearable, and an all-round horrible self-righteous human being.

Also, for those of you who haven’t watched the first episode, the reason she is tolerated is because her mother is the captain of the ship, and her dad is an admiral in Star Fleet. It’s the only explanation I can come up with as to why she’s wearing that uniform. Captain Mom is actively trying to get rid of her, which doesn’t mean a courts martial, or a removal to somewhere else...but transferring her back to Admiral Dad. It’s implied that they have been doing this for years, btw. They both recognize that they’ve failed as parents, but apparently lack the balls to send her to a CO who won’t put up with her bullshit, so they play tennis with the life of their child, and fuck anyone whose life she ruins as collateral.

Any ways, that’s not what bothered me. It was such a little thing, in context of the narrative of the episode, but it annoys me so fucking much.

So, due to ‘shenanigans’, Morty gets his clothes destroyed by the giant spider cow below.

He had his underwear on going in, but they’re ripped off of him as the thing starts fucking with his naked body in its mouth. He begs Black Rick for help, but when the alien farmer tells her it won’t kill him, she just lets it molest him...and it is heavily implied when it spits him out a very long time later, that it sexually assaulted him.

After this they’re driving back, and he’s wearing some shitty farm cloth that was only grudgingly given to him.

He’s still covered in the slimy shit from the mouth of that thing that assaulted him. I know why it’s necessary in the story, as the goop is the cure to the zombie plague (don’t ask)...but why the fuck was he being taken back like that?

For context, he was there because he saw Black Rick stealing supplies (literal spades and hoes, btw). He followed her, and when he found out she was trying to help these farmers, he agreed to help. His being there was her fault. He agreed to help these people.

Yet, after he’s fucked up, and left filthy and naked on the ground, they just send him back with some jokey bit of cloth on him. They wouldn’t even let him clean himself up first. It seems silly focusing on this, and I am amazed at how much it bugs me, but it does. This guy wanted to help, and after he is basically raped doing so, no one would even offer him a pail of water and a cloth to clean himself up before sending him back home...and I am expected to laugh at this.

No. Fuck you, CBS. Fuck you.

The controls would all be managed by the ship's computer systems. The holographic crewmen are just there because it's fancy, it makes the place livelier, and because how can you be a captain without a fucking crew? Sure, it's my own one man ship but the fact is I want to feel like a goddamn captain.
Plus holodecks can create people almost as realistic as real people. So I could whip up some interesting and enjoyable companions to pass the time with in various ways.
Not to mention those holographic crewmen could be assigned jobs the computer can't do and that I don't want to do. Look at the Doctor. If a hologram can perform delicate surgery it can repair a warp manifold. Hell, might actually be preferable because if the engine room is flooded with lethal radiation the holo-crew can still go in there and fix the shit.
And finally: Redundancies. For every 1 holo emmiter you actually need you should install 3. Just in case.
