How do you think Starfield will turn out?

Reading the reddit update post it looks like Bethesda is hoping to pull a Cyberpunk and save the game by adding hotly requested features for support. Top of the list was seamless planet exploration and city maps, as well as new traversal methods.
Wouldn't that mean spending even more money and never really getting a profit? I know its a gamepass game and those new ones all seem to try to be GaaS style but between selling it for half the price and the millions spent making those fucking updates it seems like it will always be trying to catch up. whereas they could have done all that stuff pre-release and gotten people to pay $100 to play it instead of $25 or literally nothing because its on the pass. Say what you will about Cyberpunk, every update was leading to them thinking they could get idiots to buy in right before a DLC launched. Beyond that, despite years of fucking with the game, and releasing a dlc and a tv show, a slight majority of their sales are from launch, and in terms of cash i think its like 2/3rds of revenue is from their launch too.

I know Microsoft is run by retards but they won't be able to make a profit from trying to fix the game at this point. better off cutting and running.

Yeah sure.....but look at GTA5. They released the multiplayer update years later or whatever. And their micro-transactions and 'shark cards' model made billions. There are estimates that 'shark cards' alone were closing in on $1billion annually. You think the stupid aged jewish corporate suits that dominate the gaming industry understand that Starfield can't have something like an online mode or 'shark cards' and generate $800million in pure cash for nothing every year? They are salivating over 'games as a service' allowing them to lease and rent games to people who cannot own the content anymore.

This retarded mentality of chasing the phantom 'games as a service' lottery tickets leads to horrendous degenerate garbage like SEGA's Hyenas. Where companies that specialize in strategy games are dumping their talent for wastes of life who cannot make anything in the off chance or miracle that their 'service game' somehow becomes the next Fortnite or GTA or whatever the executives masturbate nightly over.

There are probably dozens of suits and investors that are describing how Starfield is like 'Tron' or 'Star Wars' to their grandchildren thinking of the billions it will generate for them. Not realizing that the game is entirely and utterly shit.

Do we think an industry collapse is coming or are their too many neighbour cattle gamers who will buy a new £70 reskin of last year’s FIFA and their ridiculous loot boxes who will never learn?

A 1983 style crash is unlikely now due to the large number of indie devs. But among AAA studios? Fuck yeah, many of those studios are fucked in the long term. Look at the emails Microsoft didn't bother censoring for the SEC, console sales are stagnant or falling due to younger generations no longer wanting or being able to afford a TV so they use their phone for gaming and content consumption. Like Hollywood studios, AAA studios are spending hundreds of millions dollars on games that will never turn a profit. In the next few years you will see many AAA studios collapse and either close for good or be bought up by larger studios/companies. Indie studios will be fine for the most part and a few of them will probably become AAA studios and start the cycle all over again.

It's kind of amazing how fast this game died. I don't see anyone talking about it.

Not on Twitter, not on YouTube, not on reddit, not in irl gamer circles.

No one gives a fuck about Starfield.

Well let's see, you basically need a new PC to play it, it'll still lag any way, and while it's feature rich, having "1000 worlds", most of them have nothing on them

Yea I know it's shit I've played it but even slop games have dedicated fan communities even if they're small.

I've never seen a game of this scope go from highly anticipated and discussed to literally zero web presence whatsoever in two months.

Say what you will about other Bethesda titles, you had stuff to do, even with the jank. It was fun. A game can't survive if it's not fun. It's not a game anymore. It's a boredom simulation

a now semifamous griefing ex-employee of Blizzard said a microtransaction horse character in WoW made more money for Blizzard than all of Starcraft 2.

No reason whatsoever anymore for the industry to make another good game. Only microstransaction shit that appeals to autistics and/or children with parents credit card.

You can only hope Todd Howards ego is at least completely buckbroken by this like George Lucas being mad over JarJar to this day.

I think Microsoft and Bethesda are willing to burn the money if it means getting 'creations' up and running with gusto so they can sell 45 dollar mod packs to blithering retards. This has been Bethesda's plan dating back to, what, 2012? If they can monetize their mod community they will have so much money it isn't even funny.

But because Bethesda are retarded they've fucked that up totally by making 'an empty sandbox for modders to fill!' when they fail to realize that, what Stokes mod author fires, is an interesting setting and characters that they want to expand and explore.

That's exactly what happened in the 1983 crash, big american companies died, japan took over, britbong indie devs in their bedrooms moved up in the world. Console sales are falling due to games being fucking shit, no other reason

its crazy how they somehow saw New Vegas kick their ass and at no point did bethesda go "hey we should try to figure out what made that good and emulated it" Of course that would mean firing their writer but still. I'd assume there was a ton of shit they cut from Starfield after higher ups said no and they're quickly trying to patch in what they can back into the game over all of 2024. There's no way in hell a game this empty took 5+ years to make.

honestly its not the 7th gen anymore, there aren't any real "console exclusives" outside of a handful of titles, plus the cost is outweighed hard once you realize how easy it is to get shit for free on a pc vs a console. Consoles are probably dying out outside of the switch because of how not needed they are. You don't even get the luxury of split screen so if your boys come over you can play some games with them.

plus the gen refreshes don't help either. I wouldn't be shocked if consoles die out, besides the switch. But huge studios seem like they're done.

The people who made New Vegas have talked to people who leaked that Bethesda hates New Vegas. Bethesda also has told companies getting the Fallout license to limit or fully restrict any references to New Vegas. So if you get a license to make a board game or novel you will be lucky to get a single brief mention of anything related to New Vegas approved.

At least one Obsidian employee talked on RPGCodex about how Bethesda lied about the release window of New Vegas because they knew it would cause the game to be released too early. And lower the Metacritic score that was tied to the bonus paychecks. So they basically pulled QA from Obsidian and messed with the game in a few other ways. This is the same Bethesda that released multiple Fallout 3 DLCs in completely unplayable states. Like in The Pitt where you would get to a certain point and the game would soft lock every time until they patched it because Bethesda did zero QA work.

I know that they were doing concept art and designs for the game before 2013 when the name Starfield was getting copyrights. It was in development before Fallout 4 was released. So this game is a decade a more in the making. Plus the engine was already made and a lot of the code and assets are reused from Fallout 4 and other Gamebryo trash.

The absolute vitriol Bethesda has for New Vegas is hilarious. I still remember how bad Todd was trying to memory hole it with Fallout 4, even saying shit like "This is the first time there's been iron sights in a Fallout game".

Then they went on to try and emulate it anyway with the faction system.

Bethesda using the creation engine means that 3+ of those years was probably spent trying to get spaceships to work.

I've been saying this for everything now. People say games are 'bigger' and 'more expensive than ever!' and that's why every game needs a 7 year dev cycle to be finished but I can't possibly see how it's the result of anything other than trannie coders and a lack of actual talent.

No doubt. Skyrim's horses only made it in by the skin of their ass because even with their horrendously slow speed they couldn't get the game streaming fast enough until the end of development.

Are you sure about that?

All I have recommended to me the past month on Youtube has been either Completionist charity fraud videos and Starfield fucking sucks videos.

It's actually gotten annoying because it's really obvious it's just becoming a bandwagon thing at this point tbqh. I wish people would just forget about his mediocre game so I didn't have to see every aspiring gaming Youtuber pop up.
