Stellar Blade / Project Eve Thread - aka Stellar Ass

For me, it's the bonfire mechanic.

I remember hearing that the demo is a souls like but the main game is not. No idea if that's true.
now yous forgetting the save room from castlevania.

bonfires are basically a lite version of that, even restoring enemies and shieet and on both games it's for grinding sake.

A lot of Dark Souls mechanic became popular due to solving design issues that plagued Action games for a long time:

Estus replaces the need for either a large health bar that makes non-bosses less of a threat, or item/secret based health regeneration that sucks balls.

Bonefires are player triggered checkpoints. Without needing the dev to think too hard.

Empty world with implied lore is easier to write and design.

Actual gameplay wise you had slower games and dodge based games beforehand.

I think the perfect description of this game is Nier Automata meets Devil May Cry, with the exploration of Dark Souls.
Devil May Cry is much more button mashy than either of those, the only similarity is they're visually stylish. It does feel pretty close to Nier in terms of mechanics.

A sequel has been confirmed
I hope they can manage 2027. Really, I was hoping for 2026 because they don't really need to change much and it's not the high end of AAA. Best thing about gaming back in the old days was getting sequels fast, within months sometimes, but often just a year or two.

I'm tempted to play it now out of boredom. Gameplay looks passable and I haven't tried an action game in a while.
You could do a lot worse.

I saw the Nikke DLC was out so I loaded up the game after about a year and ended up going from the first guns only section to getting the last ending I hadn’t gotten, the bad ending.
Cutting Lily in half accidentally after she gets shocked by the robot then Lily waking up just long enough to tell Eve she doesn’t like the new her and that’s she’s also afraid to die then immediately die afterwards is rough. I’d joke about calling it the “Fuck off, Lily ending” since you have to basically ignore her gauge the whole game but the ending really goes fuck off, Lily
Still haven’t done the Nikke DLC yet but I hear there’s bosses so I’ll try to do it.

If you optionally want high scores or something, sure. I got by fine button mashing for the most part in DMC 1 & 2. DMC3 is just a lot harder in general for some reason.
Well that's the thing about Devil May Cry isn't it. You can button mash and win the game, but beating the game isn't the point. Styling on the enemy is the point and if you wanna style, its a lot less button mashy.

DMC2 you can absolutely phone in. It's downright monotonous. It's infamous for the fact that the guns stunlock most enemies and you can trivialize almost every boss just by going Devil Trigger + Ranged Attack. Like @LightDragonman1 said, 3 is the one that solidified the "character action" type of slasher. Fun fact: the original North American release on PS2 was way harder than any other edition because they made Japanese hard mode the American normal, and yellow orbs sent you back to a checkpoint instead of reviving on the spot, while dying without one made you restart the level. Yellow Orb Mode in the HD collection is based on this model. I can't believe I ever got past Cerberus back then.

I feel like the pace and feel of combat in Stellar Blade is a lot closer to something like Nioh but that's fine because I liked Nioh.

Thread tax: I unlocked the burst skills pretty recently. What's the difference between the 3 versions of "damage everything in a circle around you" and why would I use any of them instead of the Vergil Judgment Cut move? I see the different use cases for all the Beta skills but not so much these.

Descending Break is the only burst move that does stance damage (up to 2 points), but Punishing Edge does more normal damage than that. You can avoid unblockables with both of these moves because they make you airborne. Overdrive does the most damage of the 3 but doesn't launch you into the air. It does have massive invincibility frames though and heals you when it's fully leveled up but costs 4 points of instead of 3.

'Stellar Blade' Director Rejects Idea Of "Regulating" Adult Mods: "Once The Game Is Purchased, It Belongs To The User” (archive.ph)

While some of the world’s more puritanical individuals have found themselves clutching their pearls over the adult mod potential of Stellar Blade‘s PC release, game director Hyung-Tae Kim has no interest in trying to police fans’ creative interests, as not only does he believe it to be a fool’s errand, but he is also a strong proponent of ‘customer ownership’.

Wow, what a refreshing take, the gaming world is beginning to heal.

Okay, now I'm mildly interesting. Sell its gameplay (Sexo women are a bonus, but not enough to win me over) to me. I've basically only played one third person slashy-dodgy-parry thing that I thoroughly enjoyed, and it was Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, which I grinded into almost completion, only noping out on VR missions which were aids. Is SB similar or nah?

What 3rd person action games have you played that you didn't like and why didn't you like them?

It takes elements from a lot of different ones. If you played the demo that gives you a feel for most of the bread and butter mechanics like the parry and dodge system, the camps, and how the combo animations can avoid damage. And if you haven't played the demo, play the demo.

Differences in the full game are how the MC begins to feel more responsive as you level up, particularly with crowd control. It never becomes DMC or Bayonetta but it stays pretty intuitive while giving you a decent toolbox of offensive and defensive options. There are also a mix of linear areas like Eidos 7 and open areas that reward exploration.

Pros for me are the fact that the level of challenge stays pretty even. I've been playing on normal mode and I've never felt like I either didn't have the tools to handle a situation, or that too much grinding had made things trivial. Even returning to the starting area I really can't just spam attack at a room of enemies and expect them to fall over unless I use one of the metered special abilities or something. Also I think a lot of the puzzles happen to be pretty clever or well-designed.

Cons feel like the result of a company that got rich off a mobile gacha game making their first big boy release. Reliance on yellow paint design philosophy and what feels like other attempts to undermine their own challenges and obstacles out of fear that someone might get stuck or frustrated. The effects of gear and exospines also feels understated at times so if you're hoping to try out different "builds" this isn't the game for that. I'm not a theorycraft type of player either so this is a nitpick for me but it could have been fun if different equipment setups had more of an effect on play.

tl;dr It looks good and plays well and I think people will call it a solid first entry into a series that got better with subsequent releases.

The highest praise I can give it:

I bought it thinking it was gonna be a gooner game to stream with friends for like 2 hours until I would get bored and then refund it. I have not refunded it and continue playing it.

As a rule, I don't like Souls games, especially if they're from Fromsoft because Fromsoft will dilberately make things cheap, fuck you on mechanics, add button delays, give bosses excessive health pools, ridicules tracking, and not make them play by the same rules as the player (IE, a player with a great sword in a narrow hallway has weapon collision with the hallway and can't fight as a result, but an NPC with a greatsword can clip through the walls and hit you as much as they want). In this regard, Stellar Blade is more enjoyable. The combat feels better to me, I appreciate the specatcle, and because it cheats a lot less than Dark Souls does, it actually feels more rewarding to play.

EVE herself is kind of a retard. The first few hours I didn't really like her because of how naive and kind of retarded she acted, but 14 hours in and there's a lot of quirks she has that I find kind of endeering (like her fascination with soda cans). Additionally, she's proven herself to be more capable as time has gone on, which makes her more likable as opposed to the first few hours. There are some quirky things I enjoy like the fact she really seems to care what an obeese (HE'S FAT!) Cyborg's opinion of her hair is, and those little moments have kept me engaged.

I do enjoy the enemy designs for the most part. There's a few parry windows that annoy me on some of the monsters, but I think that's because I have a tendency to want to hold down parry after the animation has played when you don't need to and that gets me hit unnecessarily, but aside from that its a very compitent action game that if you got rid of EVE would probably still stand on its own with a generic male protagonist in the same situation.

The complaints about 2B, Bayonetta, Lara Croft and Bloodrayne

Wait, you mean people are trying to cope that Rayne, who got her own spread in the October 2004 Playboy magazine (with her baps out no less) is less sexualized than Eve? Give me a break.

R.I.P. Hugh. Sorry everything is so lame and gay today. We used to be a society.
