Considering the state of Steven universe and later Adventure time makes me appreciate how Gravity falls ended before it had a chance to crash and burn, IMO.

This is actually the legit reason why Alex Hirsch wrapped up the show so soon; in addition to being burnt out, he wasn’t sure he would be able to keep up the quality and nearly ended it after a single season, but was convinced to make a second season.Considering the state of Steven universe and later Adventure time makes me appreciate how Gravity falls ended before it had a chance to crash and burn, IMO.

I used to criticize Alex Hirsch for cutting it short when it had so much potential but looking back, I can totally see where he was coming from.

The show ended exactly where it needed to. It wrapped things up in a satisfying conclusion that had been built up since the beginning.
Very few shows can do that.

On the positive side, I can see the better parts of the fandom (the ones into lore and world building as well as general storytelling) joining the IT fandom.
As we enter March Madness and as the clock begins ticking on the show come Friday, I sit back and reflect on the state of the fandom once everything is over.
On the positive side, I can see the better parts of the fandom (the ones into lore and world building as well as general storytelling) joining the IT fandom. Notice how most of them left after the Rose reveal?
On the down side, given the shipping and hint of LGBT content, I can see the cancerous part of the fanbase shitting up the Owl House fandom. She-Ra is too vegetive for them and they burned bridges with the Hazbin Hotel fans.
To rerail this back to SU, Rebecca (either the bane or boon of AT depending on who you ask), really didn’t learn the right lessons when making her own show. Just like the previous show, SU had a neat little premise but threw it to the wayside in favor of a soap opera, to the point that the final battle with the main villain turned into a metaphor for abusive families, while Future has just been a PSA for mental health. Not to mention, like AT, SU would introduce loads of characters that either added nothing to the plot or started out prominent but then got shoved to the background. There are a few differences I give credit for:
-Barring Sadie and Shep, the series has a much better track record of LGBT representation, at the very least with Pearl. Compare this to Bubbline, which was teased for the entire show and only got hooked up at the very last minute yet was still hailed as “brave”.
-Love it or hate it, Sugar and her crew did at least put some planning ahead with their show. AT made it up as it went along and it showed, big time.
-Rebecca made sure that the focus stayed on the main character, rather than let him slip further into the background like Finn. Unfortunately, she went too far into the other extreme.

You know, looking back, one of the things I think the show never could make its mind was on whether the gems were magical or not.
Early on in the show, the gems were clearly designed to be a magical species. Besides, clearly referring to what they did as "magic" and how there was clearly a temple dedicated to a moon goddess.
Also, this is very easy to forget, but early on they had an overpowered magical device that could time travel, after they had an Indiana Jones-like adventure, that could've easily been used to change the past.
Then at the end of the show, the gems are treated more like sentient supercomputers with sci-fi technology that merely use hard light projections and live in a very secular society.
So which one is it?
On a more complimentary note, that shit is still my favorite episode, and the reveal still my favorite moment in the show. Where we've got this thing farting and doing shitty jokes the whole episode but it's also scared shitless of the gems and you're left wondering how benevolent they really are. Then he pulls it out and you get this mysterious new character. That shit got me hungry for more answers back in the day. 'Course it didn't really lead anywhere satisfying, but still. They can provide life to a physical being or power tools and technology. (Lapis and the mirror.)

Upon further looking back, you do have a point. As much as the fanbase loves to stroke off the show for the Pink Diamond twist and Garnet being a fusion, even the creators admit they made some shit up as they went along; the exact meaning behind Pearl and Garnet’s convo in Ocean Gem, Amethyst being defective and feral, the Cluster’s exact nature, Bismuth’s entire existence, the alien abduction. I do agree with the sentiment that it was great at giving hints through background but that’s all I can give it now.I agreed with everything until I got to what I bolded. Like her former boss Pendleton Ward, she laid the bare-minimum for her story and her tumblr army filled in the holes until the next plot point was reached. Both shows are storyboard-driven and both had tone problems. And both were admittedly stylish.
It probably also helps that Future so far actually contradicts themes and developments from the show and movie, making it feel like a post script season and less like it’s trying to organically tie up loose ends. I figure CN is doing what Disney wanted to do with GF.SU, like adventure time to a lesser extent, was great at hinting at a larger story. Heck one of the thing I can say they did really great is giving hints through backgrounds.
It's just that the payoffs didn't live up to that for the most part, I think. Mostly because there wasn't much to tell really. And what everyone had in their heads was more complex than what we ended up getting.
It reminds me of a lot" Star Vs" final season. It had a rushed ending that didn't explain a lot of things, and a lackluster final villain. Fans were quick to blame Disney for "cutting it short". Problem is, in that show they knew it was their final season, and they still had filler episodes. It's not that they were cut short, rather it was the fact that that was sincerely as far as they planned to go.
And now Steven Universe got a whole extra season and a movie after it's supposed ending. And nothing interesting happens. It's not because "they needed more time", rather it's because Pink Diamond's reveal and turning White diamond good really was their endgame.
A lot of people have mentioned they think the lore has a lot of potential, and it does, but I do think this is as far as Sugar planned to go: reveal Pink is Rose: have the diamonds turn good with the power of feelings.
A trans-gem-der with mental health issues. Of course-A press kit was released featuring a sappy speech from Sugar and photo from the end credits saying “We’ll always be family”, more or less confirming that Steven is leaving for good. This has actually rattled some parts of the fanbase, pointing out that making a season dedicated to mental health and having him dip is contradictory. Naturally, most of the fanbase still sees this as amazing writing.
