Steven Universe - Now a Griefing Thread

I feel like they were going for a more "alien" feeling to the music, but I'll agree it didn't sync up well

Yeah, "alien" is what I think they were going for. I thought the main vocals were good for the most part, but Deedee Magno's backup vocals were rather unappealing, which may have to do with putting on a voice for the Pearls. The track had some notes that were likely discordant on purpose, but made it not particularly pleasant to listen to.

For the purpose that it served I think the song was good. It was a song that addressed loss in an interesting way, with Yellow Diamond's position being that she still thinks of Pink Diamond and feels pain at her shattering but she knows that as the leader of an entire race she had to move past it, in a similar way that Greg moved past Rose actually, that they both decided to invest in the things that mattered to them (YD with ensuring the creation of and improvement of Gems and Greg with raising Steven).

Oh yes, definitely, from a character-building and story-driving standpoint, it was a nice little thing to have. Conveys emotion and information to the audience in a quick and believable way (believable as far as musicals go, of course).

I stopped watching this a while back but I thought this perspective was amusing

Up to about halfway through Season 3 now. I just want to say how autistically pleased I was that they got Patti LuPone, one of the most notorious divas in musical theater, to play Yellow Diamond.

Also, "It's Over, Isn't It" was beautiful. The songs in this show tend to be hit or miss with me (not a huge fan of uke stuff), but when they get it, they nail it. I was really impressed with the voice actor's singing chops. Pearl has always had the strongest singing voice in the cast and I'm glad she was given the chance to show it off.

On the subject of villains, I agree with what everyone is saying. I'm still waiting for an actual legit threat to the characters and not constantly having to deal with woobie villains that can be turned back to good with a speech. It gets boring after a while. It's not hard to make a villain sympathetic while still letting them be a villain. That's where the use of tragic villains come into play--villains that are a big threat and can be seen as sympathetic to the viewer while still unable to push past their weaknesses and in turn bringing about their own downfall at the hands of the hero. Disney has done it. Dreamworks has done it. It's not very hard.

I dunno. At the end of the day, I just want the show to actually push the boundaries and do something hardcore. All the spergs on tumblr rant over and over about how the show is 'revolutionary' and has adult themes and such but all I see is them constantly playing it safe to keep things warm and fuzzy for all the children and manchildren watching it.
tbh steven universe was a lot more watchable when it was a fat kid running around, having goofy monster of the week adventures and slice-of-life shit. It was comfy, it was cute, and the artstyle actually suited the tone.

Then it actually started taking itself seriously and it got fucking unbearably bad. It tries to be a serious story, but completely shits itself by virtue of completely failing to establish any particularly interesting/sympathetic characters. You can genuinely distill each character into a one or two sentences, and they're usually some form of 'I'M SAAAAAAAAAAAD'. this'd be fine, if people weren't sucking off this show as some masterful narrative with complex characters. like, it's barely on the level of fucking Sailor Moon, much less something with depth like Utena.

Music's usually pretty decent though, and the flashback episodes centered on Rose and Greg are genuinely pretty fun, and honestly would make a much better show. Almost has a Tenchi Muyo kinda vibe, but that might just be me.

Btw, I personally stopped watching it because I couldn't tolerate the stupid bullshit that often plagues this series. I looked into it a while back because it was fairly popular online and I was fairly curious if it was actually good. I heard that the earlier ones were worse so I tolerated through them and the new one's were a little more interesting with the overall lore but it's not much different otherwise. My big issues with it are that almost all the characters are incredibly dumb a lot of the time, especially Steven. Most of the issues in the show could be solved either immediately or much more effectively if the characters took the smarter route. The plot is probably what I was most interested in overall but the overall plot runs at an incredibly slow boil. About every 20 episodes it has a small hint or detail about something bigger going on but isn't elaborated on. It takes around to 70 ep mark to actually have an overarching goal. The fights are very bland and pretty bad at times. They have a wide arsenal of abilities which they could use creatively if the writers wanted to put effort into but about all of them just boil down to who's directly stronger than the other which is just boring. Half the characters are much more unlikable than they should be as well. It's probably trying to make them seem flawed but you can still do it without making them objectively terrible people. It has some interesting parts and I thought the show had plenty of potential for cool stories and scenes but it unfortunately usually focuses on either Steven being an idiot or melodramatic antics. Now note that I don't hate this series and the reason I watched it for quite some time was that I found a lot of it interesting and I liked some aspects enough to keep watching but the problems I had with it kept growing on me and it overshadowed the good parts in my eyes. Sorry for sperging.

lol calm down

I mean, even though I'm all for separating art from the artists as long as they don't try to make themselves look like the good guys, that's just a really pathetic way to end a relationship.

Going back to Steven Universe, I haven't watched the show like I used to. Sort of like how Adventure Time at the end of the day stuck to the status quo, I think the pacifist/"talk down the villain" approach is so overdone, it killed off my interest in the show.

I know this late, but about the whole Miyazaki situation, I really haven't found an article where it says that. The best I can found was that Goro (Miyazaki son) says that have a rocky relationship because how Miyazaki sacrifice time he could would his son with work. Though Goro said as he was growing up that he understood his situation as a renowned creator, but he still felt lonely in those years and wish for more time. Another thing is that Goro has expressed to not be compare to his father as the next "Miyazaki", since he want to be his own person.

I was morbidly curious enough that I watched the first season, and I don't get the whole Tumblr-inas and SJW sperging about this whole fucking show. It's just a decent kids' show filled with comedy, stupidity, action, and drama. The gems aren't really gays or lesbians because they're uni-sexual. Stevonnie isn't the first transgender character ever in television in a kids' show: Japan did it years ago with this character named Ranma that turns gender when he/she touches cold or hot water. The theme of one's identity, and tolerance and adversity in society in so much LGBT shows are rarely discovered in-depth because it being a kids' show kind of limits the message you are able to deliver because kids don't have enough social understanding for such messages.

There are shit tons of show out there that's about LGBT communities like Queer as Folk that are maybe even better than Steven Universe because they're more relevant and in-depth. This is like My Little Pony v2.0.

Best way to enjoy the show is to avoid the fandom. They'll try and make a big SJW deal out of something that is only marginally related.
