The problem, for me, is less that the filler was there and more that they didn't use it to develop the characters outside of Garnet.
My fault, completely forgot about some of those episodes. I guess it's more the fact that a good chunk of them were more pointless towny episodes instead of character development filler episodes with some including the townies instead.
Even if the filler did try to give the townies more depth, it still has to contend with the question that is "and we’re watching this instead of fighting space dictators... why exactly?" and it always felt like the show never knew how to answer that. The classic "Is this the most exciting part in this story’s timeline and, if not, why the fuck are we not there already" conundrum.
This is exactly how I feel. They created a genuinely interesting premise with shapeshifting gem aliens taking care of a hybrid Gem-Human child while trying to fight off a terrible and ruthless enemy who has no qualms about committing genocide against organic beings and even their own fucking people, and for some reason they think the most interesting thing to do here is make episodes about the least interesting aspect of the setting? Like, what the fuck is even the point of the main story if about half the show is just going to be boring shit?
"But we need the filler episodes so you care when they get kidnapped!"
Assuming this isn’t just random retcons to save face, the series has become so much infuriating. They spend more time thinking up these big ideas and retconning stuff than actually implementing anything meaningful. The worst example would be Morganite and Emerald; there was foreshadowing for them to appear later only for the crew to not commit to them.
Even worse is how she says that if they had sixth season or a seventh season, then they could have told those stories. As if telling them in the past five seasons was impossible; we don’t need two more seasons of boring townies and breather episodes before getting to the interesting stuff.
Fuck actual character development I guess. We need more gay weddings.
Hell, during SUF when the opening was revealed, people speculated that the villains would team up as well as homeworld gems that didn't like era 3 and Jasper was somehow controlling White. That would have been a way better story than what we ended up getting IMO.

Filler has its place if used correctly. The episode of DBZ where Piccolo and Goku learn to drive may be one of the greatest artistic triumphs of the 20th century.
I think the other area where Crewniverse hit a snag with the whole "total planetary destruction and the eradication of all on earth for the empire isn’t genocide" thing is that Gempire doesn’t need to engage in that level in conquest for reasons that were traditionally the motives behind expansion. Gems don’t eat so they have no need for agriculture, Gems don’t age so there’s no incentive for reproduction or sustaining a consistent labor force, Gems don’t even need housing because they are immune to the elements so there’s no need for construction, resource farming, or any of the technological advancements that come with that.
I thought they were harvesting earth's mineral resources? Since the gem method of reproduction is to grow them in the ground.

Space Ghost was honest and simple, SUck is too perverse and meta with itself a parody is just redundant because everyone already makes fun of it and note what influences it takes from elsewhere. For example, Meat Canyon's spoofs of decades old cartoons work the same way Lasagna Cat transforms a simple comic strip into a one hour Ted Talk. How can something created from corrupted people be corrupted further?
