Suggestion and Update Thread

  • Happy Easter!
We need a science forum.

Here's a long post about a science forum idea. Science forums are full of mundane topics, and it's good to nourish the mind with scientific knowledge. I can't think of a logo for this forum, but it could be an atom. These could also be the threads it might contain and the thread prefixes.
General discussion boards
(I'm too lazy to investigate threads that should be moved to this hypothetical forum, help me with that)

Now this may have already been suggested and it may be something that Xenforo doesn't allow. But I have seen in the forum sections for Gaijin games that you can see the posts that have quoted a specific post. It makes it really easy to follow conversations and see if your point was already raised.
Example 1.webp

I know you just nuked a bunch of the sneedchat channels because of lack of activity, but with 4chan being down I miss the fast shitposting of /smg/ and I think a stock/crypto trading chat would be fun. The bidness threads don't work well for AAAAAA/OOOOOO posting

Can we have a way to skip the "not available for legal reasons" screen with a UK address? I'm using a UK VPN, so I don't care if the glowies log me.

Adding in to this, you should advertise sneedchat to 4chan users, and make it appear at the top of the 4chan thread so all the new users can feel at home shitposting in it.

Is it possible to add the ability to see the word-count and/or attachment size count while making a post (either for here or forum rewrite)? I would like to be able to see how close I am to the limit when writing long posts without doing something janky like converting to BBcode and copy-pasting into a Google Doc.
Big agreement here. A way of counting characters within the post editor would be a nice feature to add, especially for those editing large posts and OPs. Copy/pasting into a word processor is extremely inaccurate with huge variances between what the post editor recognizes (words, file names and extensions) and what the user is able to count via a third party program on their system.

I spent a couple hours pruning a thread and it basically became a guessing game when Microsoft Word told me I was at 51,000 characters and the forum was still telling me I was over the 64,000 character limit. Got it done, but it was a process.

You reminded me of one big difference between the post editor and other word processors: newlines (pressing the enter key) count as a character here on the forum but not in Google Docs (and presumably other word processors, but I didn't check those). I never would have found that out without testing it in DMs.

In any large OP/effortpost, those newlines can add up; the BBcode of one of my test messages (part of a exhaustive OP I wrote) was listed as 62775 characters in Google Docs, but one more character and I was over the character limit (64000) here, with it apparently containing over a thousand newlines! :stress:

Thank you for that confirmation. I suspected as much and started getting rid of as many of them as possible. A variance of 10,000 is absurd and is really deflating when you've got a narrative structure you're trying to work with, but no clue how much more you need to slash. And yes, Null did say that "brevity is the soul of wit" when asked about the character limit... but we're cramming a decade of happenings into this thread and it is going to take up a lot of space.

Wow, that's a long time (and a lot of happenings, by the sounds of that) to cover. I tried to cover 5 years of happenings for another community and I ended up needing 9 posts due to character limits (although I did try to cover each event as exhaustively as I could and included transcripts for audio).

Thread tax:
Whenever I type in the reply box, if I press Tab on the keyboard, it highlights the "Post Reply" button; then if I press Enter, it will immediately hit post (which I suspect is causing some of the "Hit post too early" posts).

Is it possible to add a confirmation before sending a post (maybe only in Prospering Grounds if it's too intrusive elsewhere) or make the Tab key not highlight the "Post Reply" button first when typing in the reply box?
