Super Mario RPG Remake - coming soon

The Music. Why. Why do companies always fuck the music when they do a remake?
First Fromsoft Castrated Demon Souls OST, now, ArtePiazza once again reminding us they suck with OSTs.That new horn ensemble for the boss music does not spark joy.
Music is good, actually, and even if you don't like the new rendition it has the option to just play the OG soundtrack

Does Mallow still - after yelling at you for reading people's wishes on Star Hill - just straight up say "I'm just embarrassed about my wish [you know, just in case you didn't get it]"?

I always wondered if that was in the Japanese. Because if not, then holy shit, Ted. They're kids, not mongoloids.

I had a gift card for Best Buy and had to choose this or Super Mario Wonder and I went with the former just because it's new versus a game I played 25 years ago. It looks like a genuinely solid remake from the clips and streams I've seen though so I'll plan on snagging it eventually.
From what it sounds like even the secrets are intact for the most part, including the hidden boss.

Then hell breaks loose. While producing SMRPG, Nintendo announces "Psyche! N64 will be cartridge based!" and for Square this is the last fucking straw. They finish Super Mario RPG but then, after a tech demo is made for the N64 just to show Nintendo they will at least try to work with the new format being forced upon them after once again being lied to by Nintendo, say "fuck this shit...." and were going to sign an exclusive deal with Sony to make games for their CD-Rom based Playstation.
It's worth adding on to this.

In 2023 - Sony and Square's relationship has soured immensely. Square cited the PS5's low install base as an issue for the recent FF16 and has changed their strategy to release mainline FF games on other consoles and PC. FF16 is coming to PC, FF14 is going to Xbox, so this move could be a sign of better relations between Square and Nintendo.

Nintendo fans, hope you enjoy more generic cutesy slop.
Hell yeah I am.

Yep.

The composer is the exact same as the original, Yoko Shimomora. I'm noticing a trend with her work in remasters. Limitations improve art. Her work in Legend of Mana, which I consider her Magnum Opus, focused on pushing the sound hardware at the time to its limit with a diverse and compelling soundtrack. The problem is that the limits are larger today. You can add crisper audio and more complex melodies and tracks to the original soundtrack, and that is expected for a remaster. The issue is you can't really fill those new limits by diluting something that was made to completely fill the old.
Sometimes something is perfect the way it is, and it can't be improved.

Square was also open with the fact that Sony promised them creative freedom and not having to worry about censorship for FF7 which was now a PS1 exclusive.
I wonder if this is part of it. I'm willing to bet there's a lot more censorship and less creative freedom, these days.

Been having a lot of fun with the remake. It's so faithful to the original, only removing some pretty minor things like the Bruce Lee reference. Just entered Barrel Volcano and am sort of dreading the fight with the Axem Rangers. I remember them being pretty tough.

Sort of related to the game, it's weird how people are so baffled that people want Geno into Smash, since the conversation has resparked on Twitter a bit. He's just a cool looking puppet man with guns and can turn into a cannon. Not much to think over. People move the goalposts and talk about personality when Smash includes such deep characters as Ice Climbers and a bunch of Dragon Quest main characters sharing a single slot.

Speaking of things that were irritating in the original, how is the Yo'ster Isle race against Boshi in the remake?

On the SNES original I managed it once, and I remember thinking I had figured out a trick.. but playing the game again recently that part is just as stupid hard as when I was a kid (granted, on my most recent playthru I was using an emulator since I was streaming for a friend, so its possible that's messing me up).

What that race really needs is some sort of visual indicator of when you're supposed to hit the buttons, because the actual instructions are unclear as to whether you're supposed to try and press along with every single note, or just the major beats. I've always considered that challenge B.S. more just because its badly-explained.
You'll be pleased to know that it shows you when to press the buttons down in the bottom corner. Failed it the first time, but I got it on my second try.
