In a bizarre mashup of political protest, war history lesson, and modern EV engineering demo, a 98-year-old Second World War veteran just played out a scene that would make Grandpa Simpson proud. Forget yelling at clouds, though, this British army vet drove a Sherman tank over a Tesla Model 3. The delightfully absurd stunt was orchestrated by the U.K.-based political action group Led By Donkeys, known for its theatrical protests and viral videos. The 90-second tank clip is its latest effort, a YouTube-ready take-down of Elon Musk, whom the group says has been “using his immense power to support the far-right in Europe.”
To deliver this fiery message, Led By Donkeys turned to Ken Turner, a real-life war hero who fought fascism on actual battlefields 80 years ago. Now nearly a century old, Turner is still fighting the good fight, this time behind the controls of a 30-ton (American) Sherman tank with a personalized mission: flatten a Tesla with a “FASCISM” vanity plate stuck on it.
“We’ve crushed fascism before, and we’ll crush it again,” the energetic nonagenarian declares before rolling over the blue Model 3 with purpose. Honestly, all that was missing was him shaking a fist and shouting at the car.
But here’s the twist: the Tesla kinda, well, survived.
Despite the tank’s 70,000-plus-pound weight, the Model 3’s core structure stayed impressively intact, all things considered. Sure, the glass roof and windows exploded in satisfying fashion, but the front doors look like they could still be opened, and the body panels remained relatively unscathed. Even the battery (which appears to have been removed beforehand, presumably for safety) likely would’ve made it out un-crushed.
Commenters on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that someone inside the Tesla might actually have survived the crushing—a claim that, while theoretical, highlights Tesla’s reputation for safety. Teslas are frequently ranked among the safest cars on the market, as long as they’re being driven and not, y’know, attempting to drive themselves. And now, unofficially, they may be among the most tank-resistant, too.
So, while the intention may have been to send Musk a message, some would argue Led By Donkeys has inadvertently launched a glowing PR moment for Tesla’s engineering team. Elon didn’t have to tweet a word, because the Tesla kinda tanked the tank. And as for Ken Turner? Somewhere, Grandpa Simpson is proud. This old man aimed to take on a political movement he argues looks similar to the one he faced down in the ’40s—with a little help from some tank treads.
