So how long until Tesla has to make a car with an engine, or at least a gas/diesel range extender?
That's Ford, and lately they've been issuing recall after recall.

The new EV company called Scout Motors is the one that's making a SUV/truck with a gas generator. I've decided it's crap.

Scout Motors is a division of VW and their trucks actually look somewhat normal so they seem promising but I'd have to investigate more

Yeah they have VAG's backing but the truck with the gas generator is just a glorified Chevy Volt in a truck/suv body. The battery was nerfed on that model and can only go about 150miles on a charge.

BYD is coming under fire for allegedly forcing workers to work unpaid overtime. / Archive

BYD and Geely are also butting heads with BYD's price cuts fueling a price war in China. / Archive

And more BYDs are suffering from issues, include a Denza (which is BYD's luxury brand) catching fire while being serviced, a Malaysian BYD Atto 3 getting bought back by BYD due to issues, and more BYDs crashing and getting damaged in more severe ways than even Nissan car crashes, showcasing the severe cost-cutting that happens with Chinese cars:

This isn't anything new to the auto trade at least in Europe. Cars cost tons money to sit on lots, better take take the loss and shift sitting inventory at a lower used car price. Better than eating the cost to fix them up when they degrade from sitting, interest on the loan from the manufacturer and limited lot space.

Not necessarily proof they're going under. Renault, Vauxhall and Nissan dealers have all done it in the past in the EU market.
Registering / tagging cars and shifting them to a second car lot is a traditional manuevre. It also pads out sales. Consignment to fleet and rental companies with fat discounts (deprecistion be damned) has the same end. There's nothing new under the sun with car dealers and import agents.

Wasn't the whole Car2Go thing was Mercedes trying to liquidate their unsold SmartCars, which is why they left cities when the cars aged out?

Ah well, I get daily updates in LinkedIn that some Chinese battery manufacturer has made a revolutionary new battery, so it'll all be fine.

Car reviewer JayEmm on Cars just dropped a exposé on BYD (the electric car giant):

  • Reviewers are not allowed to say anything negative about their vehicles.
  • If they do, BYD might sue them into oblivion.
  • They've already sued 37 Chinese influencers for “damaging” opinions.
  • You can earn up to $700,000 for reporting a reviewer who says something bad about the brand.

It's funny because you find glowing BYD reviews all over YouTube, and most of them don’t disclose that they were paid hefty sums to essentially produce disguised ads.

All of this while BYD stands accused of slave-like labor conditions in their factories — which these influencers are indirectly promoting and actively whitewashing.

I read about this a while ago but didn't think much of it because it simply seemed so outlandish. However, seeing how critics of BYD are continuing to experience a corporate witch hunt against them, my confidence in Chinese EV progress is wavering. It's unfortunate because a lot of the battery stuff is impressive. Perhaps it's not such a bad thing BYD aren't allowed to be sold in the US. At least we here can make fun of Ford and GM for continuing to suck without being fined for mean words.

Is it? Most Chinese EVs have terrible real world range because the CLTC (the Chinese version of the EPA test) is a completely unrepresentative test.

According to the CLTC, a Tesla Model 3 LR has a range of 443 miles, according to the EPA, it has a range of 363 miles, and in the real world, it has a highway range of around 250 miles.

China also likes to advertise hybrid cars as if they were EVs; most of their "1000+ km" "EVs" are actually hybrids where most of the range comes from the gas tank.

The chinese EVs themselves are kinda shit and overproduced slop, but I need to underline how shit CLTC is, the NIO ET7 supposedly does 650 miles CLTC, but 580 Kilometers (360mi) WLTP. It's retarded. It also costs about 100 000 € (not available in the US), but an ID.7 Pro S with 709km (440mi) WLTP is approx 65000€.

Don't fall for chinkshit, it deceives everytime.

But the advances in battery technolgies are actually pretty good: Si/C, better separators, aligned graphene sheets and such have yielded some of the best battery density increases we've had since we switched from NiMH to Lithium.

Even the ID.5 suffers from range reduction. 5 years in and it does 20% less.
500km and more on electric car is incredible but honestly, still a money pit. It's a toy for rich.

A Xiaomi YU7's brakes caught on fire while running on a racetrack: / Archive

And BYD is reportedly slowing down production in China due to ballooning inventory that they can't get rid of. / Archive

Brakes being set on fire on a racetrack is nothing special, especially considering that it's a pigfat EV.

I lost all brakes once on track due to heat. One of the scariest moments I've ever experienced...not quite sure how I didn't face plant a wall, but somehow managed to scrub enough speed off and only end up sideways.
Now I'm always very very aware of how much heat I'm putting into brakes and work in cooldown laps.

Remember that Tesla did the same thing with their cars, which lead to things such as melting infotainment screens, and the recall they had to do because the RAM (?) chip would run out of space, which would make the computer system inoperable.
Elon thought the reason Big Auto doesn't use cutting-edge screens is they're just stupid. Turns out it takes a long time to certify something as automotive grade, the slickest, sleekest thing usually doesn't qualify, since automotive grade means it can withstand hours in the Phoenix sunshine or the brutal cold of a North Dakota winter for years on end. So he went with industrial grade, which is good at withstanding vibrations, but factories are air conditioned, so the temperature cycling industrial grade parts have to survive isn't nearly as extreme.
