The Elder Scrolls

After years i finally decided to give Oblivion a go, so i bought the GOTY edition

Can anyone suggest me some nice basic QOL mods for a vanilla run? I've got the patches, the 4GB patch and the stutter remover

DarNified UI is often suggested for a more PC-focused interface, which tends to be more responsive to clicks, but it does alter the game's UI and HUD elements' appearances.
Somewhat of a gameplay/balance change more than QOL, but I like the mods that let you level up level-scaled quest rewards, or that keep the Oblivion gates open even after finishing the main story.

i've been playing morrowind for the first time the last couple weeks
i started out playing with the "I Heart Vanilla" modlist and attempting to minmax my levelling
got to about level 5 (15~ hours in) before i realized i was spending more time reloading saves to avoid leveling certain skills, and carrying around 100lbs of extra gear to swap out for various skill types, as opposed to actually questing
i have since restarted with the Natural Character Growth mod installed

does this detract from the game, or is the levelling system in base game morrowind widely accepted as being more of a nuisance than its worth, and are there any mods that may be better than NGC?
If you want a one and done leveling mod that takes away any need to minmax, especially if you use the retroactive or more balanced ‘realistic retroactive’ health settings, then I’d recommend Potential Character Progression. It solved all of my issues with vanilla leveling.

I play it unmodded.
Don't play it unmodded and be sure to level up resistance and luck asap.

I recently reinstalled Skyrim and have been playing around in it... Honestly it just makes me want to uninstall it and play Oblivion, or even Morrowind. I really think Oblivion hit the sweet spot with playability and accessibility versus good lore, design, and interesting quests. A lot of Skyrim just feels really bland and uninspired with a generic "fantasy" veneer to it. Frankly, I have been having more fun making money off of alchemy and using that to enchant stuff I make at the smithy than I have with the actual game. Which, I guess is still having fun, but the combat, lore, and quests really are quite bland in Skyrim and I don't think the game has aged well at all compared to its two predecessors. I can't say I foresee myself actually getting that far into the game again.

Do you consider skyrim to be an upgrade to Oblivion on Morowind on any level that isn't visual?

There is no sugarcoating, skyrim questlines are just dogshit, people jokes that they were made so in a way that the radiant quests wouldn't look too bad in comparison but let's be honest, they all suck.
Combat is ever so slightly better than Oblivion, but it comes at the cost of butchered spells.

I can't stand skyrim enemies, in particular draugrs, generic bandits with plated armor at best and the billion of forsworns that inhabit the reach and deserves to be put into a concentration camp. dragons are also unfunny to fight and I'd rather grinding dragon scales at valley of drakes.
I can't say I foresee myself actually getting that far into the game again.
How about the fact that in skyrim you need double the levels to get the strongest version of whatever your favourite weapon is?

Combat is slightly more streamlined, but with the significant reduction in player freedom, I think it's an overall downgrade. I did find it amusing that I got absolutely bodied by a frost troll while walking to Markarth. Not a lot of games shamelessly add in noob filters like that anymore out of fear of lowering customer retention.

Yeah, that's honestly the biggest issue I am having. Quests are boring. Characters are boring. Lore is boring. The only sort of interesting thing so far is the Thalmor infiltration, which I never really got into when I first played Skyrim, so I will probably dig into that and hope something grabs me. My biggest complaint has been the number of poorly animated and voicelined "cinematic" dialogue sections that won't let me skip past the dialogue that I read the subtitles for, given that they always drag on long after they needed to. I am surprised I liked this game so much in the past, given that I have so far found it to be remarkably bland and empty on my current revisit. I think I am only about 5 hours into replaying this game for the first time in years and I am already trying to invent ways to have my own fun since the game doesn't seem to keen on providing it.

I think dragons are implemented pretty poorly. I was waiting for the first dragon you fight to land for like five minutes while I whittled it away with my novice fire spell since that was all I had that could hit at a distance, and it just wasn't fun. I started carrying paralysis poisons and a bow so hopefully I can just ground the dragons quick and get the loot, but I probably will just avoid them unless I need scales or bones. Draugr, bandits, and forsworn are basically just the same enemy with a reskin, which is always really lazy and very noticeable for the player. The game could use some more enemy variety in how they fight and behave, not just their external appearance. I can't believe I am missing things like cliff racers.

I also find little things annoying, like why are there Septims everywhere in the draugr tombs? Aren't these sealed from a time before the Empire was in Skyrim? I really can't think it would have been that hard to make Dragon Priest Coins or something that actually fit with the in game lore that you can sell for Septims. Why are there so many non-Nords in positions of authority in Skyrim? I don't remember so many non-Imperials in power in Oblivion, or non-dark elves in power in Morrowind. Actually, there's just way too many of the other races all over Skyrim, even when it makes little sense. It just shows laziness and disregard for their own setting that they want me to be invested in. Honestly, replaying Skyrim has me even more convinced that TES VI is going to be bad, especially given that Fallout 4, 76, and Starfield have gone from bad to worse.

Fallout 4, 76, and Starfield have gone from bad to worse.
Bethesda is the go-to example If you want to understand the concept of normification of a franchise; streamlining gameplay, flanderizing the worldbuilding and playing tropes to the beat.
It sucks ass and it never stops getting worse as time passes by.

hey! cool it with the noticing you dork!

Dragons are immune to Paralysis. Better off just stacking Damage Health + Lingering Damage Health since they are grounded once their health drops below half.
The only reason combat in skyrim is slightly better than previous games is because of shield bashes.
Magic builds were peak in Oblivion thanks to customizable spells and variety and in skyrim makes for the worst experience immaginable.

Btw, did you know that todd loves to play barbarian?

So far i think Oblivion was a huge downgrade compared to Morrowind. The settlements and cities feel dead and empty, and i don't see much liberty in character building as many cool things are absent from this game

The difficulty/level scaling is atrocious too. Crank the difficulty too high, everything is a HP sponge, crank it a little less, everything is too easy

That really pissed me off, too. The leveled weapons/encounters I find gay partially for the same reason. Suddenly all the bandits who were wearing fur and wielding iron have full plate and glass swords. Really takes away from the desperate vibes they had in the beginning. If you're rich enough to afford that level of gear, you do not have to waylay niggas chasing quest markers (also gay).

The other reason leveled weapons are gay is because in the minds of the -67 IQ mongoloids at jeethesda, More HP + More Damage = difficulty and it MUST only go one way. God forbid you find a powerful sword and are OP for a few levels. No, you MUST spend half of your playtime tabbing into your inventory to drink a health potion because you stumbled into a dude who can strip your health bar with a single light attack. That's why I play a mage. Get staggerlocked nigger. The more I type the more I want to give up my current playthrough and reinstall Daggerfall.

I don't know how they went from the Oblivion Thieves Guild to the Skyrim one but holy shit it was so bad. How do you downgrade from stealing a fucking Elder Scroll and breaking into the Imperial Palace to dungeon crawling so you can return the Skeleton Key? Nevermind the "selling your soul to Nocturnal" bit. What is with the Skyrim guilds and forcing you to sell your soul to a Daedric Prince?
