The Final Fantasy Thread

I'm just happy to see the return of squats. The fact that you still need to do a bunch of squats to get a drag queen's wig to sneak into a crime boss mansion and possibly play gay chicken with him is a good indication they are still going to have fun in this game and not take it too seriously. That is assuming you can still be the prettiest girl at the party and get picked.

I have a nagging feeling in the back of my head that FF7 remake is going to suck...
Gameplay wise I don't think it can, they basically took final fantasy 15's combat system and bothered to fix it. Square has made a ton of effort to bring in Action RPG systems and to refine them into something good, Kingdom hearts 3 probably had the best combat mechanics of the 8 previous games. Outside of Dragon Quest and Persona all turn based or slow paced series are moving into a more action oriented gameplay style with some form of tactics menu. It works because Capcom has already had success with shit like Monster Hunter that sped up the combat and companies likew Bandai Namco are taking similar steps with Tales Of.

They've already had like 7 years of trial and error with 15 so I'm not really concerned about the overall mechanics since it is a solid base to work with, it's just they put it into 7's story and events and it already looks like they tied in far more ingame elements into the story so the opening act isn't all weird (i.e. the monsters being featured in cutscenes when before they were just in battles and there was no real explanation or mention on why you were fighting a fucking ghost house).

Did the people who call him an emo even play the game or has Nomura just memed everyone into thinking that Cloud wasn't a snowboarding Chad?

The..movie didn't do him justice. He sorta just..fucked off leaving Tifa with an Orphanage..without any real reason beyond "I got sad"

BURN IT TO THE GROUND

Okay, This does have me triggered. The Love Story is the only good thing about the game. Rinoa bringing Squall out of being an uppity asshole was actually good. But good Lord the Actual Plot makes no sense and the Junction system is outright fucking broken.

Also Random Rule.

I actually don't think I like anything about the FF7 remake so far. I wish I could say I was disappointed but it's more or less what I expected. I seem to have taken a very different path in life than most of the other adult fans they're aiming at with this.

I'm on and off with the idea of this remake, and a lot of it has to do with how they're planning to make the whole thing episodic.

From every trailer we've seen so far, it's clear the first part is going to take place primarily in Midgar, but they're going to justify it by greatly expanding on it with new scenarios and character development. And that's fine I guess, VII's opening hours in Midgar are fondly remembered so I don't think a whole game around it would hurt necessarily. And the stuff that's getting reimagined I think helps the game because it means there's some effort being put into the game to differentiate it from the original and to make it more than just a repeat.

But then you remember that there is still more to come once this part is done with, and with how long it took for part 1 to come out, who knows how long it will take for all the parts to finally be released. And I realize this won't be a problem when it's all done with, but as I said, who knows when that will be. Why bother waiting when you could just replay the original which is already the complete experience? And besides that, the original is likely to be a leaner experience, ironically enough, so you'll be getting a game with comparatively less fluff and fat.

The gameplay looks neat at the very least. I'm sad that Final Fantasy's turned away from turn-based combat, but that ship sailed a long time ago. It looks like a tighter FF15, and that's okay in my book.

I'm still going to get this remake either way since I do have some hope in it, but I don't expect it to be the definitive version over the original game.

Final Fantasy VIII is (usually) my favorite FF...

After looking further into it, what Square did with their "remaster", (particularly with the Steam version-it's *slightly* more palatable with consoles that had no other option for playing it, although Square themselves caused that problem to begin with.) is even more disgusting to me than I previously thought, and I've pretty much given up on Squenix as a company.

Near as I can tell, all they did was add (admittedly better-looking) new character models... Which still look like absolute shit on the old backgrounds that they didn't bother to change at all. (When there the original steam version already has a plethora of mods to make both look better.) And a cheats menu- (for, let's be honest, one of the easiest Final Fantasy's). Ok, and I guess they fixed the shitty midi music that the original steam version launched in... I honestly couldn't say if that's something they had already fixed with the Steam version or not, because I fixed it myself almost immediately with mods, but I sincerely hope that isn't new.

I haven't been able to find any confirmation, but I don't think any of the current mods work with this "remaster". I also somehow highly doubt that this will work with the Hyne game save editor that I still use, mostly to swap out primary characters I don't like with secondary ones I do. (It's fun playing through the main game with Seifer and Laguna in my party.)

This is a best case scenario and i have some hope that they could fix that shitshow and wrap it in the world of ff7 in a solid way. i would enjoy that.

FF9 is the DS9 of Final Fantasy. Absolutely amazing but everyone was jerking off the PS2 when it came out. 7 is a close second for me.

As far as the remake I still don't have good vibes for me. Yeah it looks big and bombastic but I don't want to wait until 2030 for a halfway finished game. Also don't like how they're shoving in summons too early and they're probably going to kill the hype of the motorcycle section. At this point I'm just interested in the new OST.

So what's the Babylon 5 to its DS9 that did everything it did but better?

After seeing the extended gameplay demo to 7 they added a shitload of other shit to do. I would probably compare it to the Hobbit movies where they stretched out minor events but unlike the hobbit they've also filled it in with meaningful content and shit like side bosses and new areas to explore. Supposedly all the shit they supposedly cut from 7 is going to be put in.

The battle system in action looks solid, if you played 12, 15 or Xenoblade you know what it's going to be like but they've also streamlined it so you're not juggling things or trying to remember specific button combos. It's also not slow, so you won't be waiting for a few seconds standing still watching you cooldowns countdown.

Apparently Square wants to keep the Cloud in a Dress reveal under wraps, my guess is they went full Karl Barx and did it justice in a very sincere way.

I'm going to say that in total it might be 40-60 hours if you're going for 100% completion.

*edit*
Outfit customization and cosmetics might be a thing, this explains why they wouldn't reveal the dress yet. I figure they're going to want you to do a playthrough entirely in the dress.

As I recall, both IX and X were being worked on at the same time. IX was even going to be a "gaiden" title before being made an official numbered game.

Even though it was well-received on launch, I'd imagine a lot of people probably took more time to warm up to it due to it being so different from VII and VIII.

Still nhf the younger cast. Wheres Steve Burton?

So FF9 remake isn't worth playing?

Far as I'm concerned, IX doesn't need a remake. Perhaps an update to the battle mechanics, but that's pretty much it.

EDIT: Or are you talking about the remaster? There's something called the Moguri Mod for the PC version that makes the backgrounds high definition and even fixes a bit of the issues that came with the remaster.

I believe there was controversy early on about the cross-dressing scene but the stuff released this week is giving me hope that they're going to leave it in. My real question is whether or not they'll leave his date rape in the honey bee inn

Oh God, I can already see the journalists sucking the game's dick for being able to play Cloud as a troon.
If it's anything like Lightning Returns changing battle outfits they're going to applaud it while having a rage induced stroke, because Aerith already has an alternate costume shown.

The one thing that fucking bothers me is Aerith being made official instead of Aeries. It sounds like a fucking lisp and I hated when Kingdom hearts did it.

Honeybee inn has apparently been left untouched if the japanese boards are correct. Nothing has been majorly altered it's just that they've really embellished shit to make a full game out of the opening act. You're going to be able to really explore Midgar.

When it's translated to english then it's up in the air, anything remotely controversial as far as Western REEEEEEEEEEEs go has been packaged with humor and tongue and cheek japanese jokes.

No matter how much weeabos cry and whine, Chad Kefka will always be better than the virgin Sephiroth. Our clown Errverlord destroyed half the world and consumed all the magic because he could and was bored, knowing that if he died he'd still win because the magic would die with him. Sephy is just an angsty mama's boy with an overly large anime sword.

I love IV so much, even though Zeromus was an unneeded final boss (Golbez was perfect and would of made a tragic end boss) it was still a perfect story. I learned how to play theme of love on piano

The fanboys jerking off this remake are the absolute worst I've encountered in ages. It's one thing to 'remaster' a bunch of games and release them with subpar code, nonetheless now available on a modern console, but to completely remake it and in a way nobody asked for. Why?

FF15 took forever to make because the engine was meant to be the foundation for a lot of 'fast' remasters. And then the first thing they do is rework one of the best FF games, allegedly, and split it up into three parts with 2-3 years between them; completely altering the genre-defining turn based combat in favor of some lazy Witcher/Souls inspired button masher. Nobody asked for this.

I regrettably read one of the threads on reddit about the remake, and it was just nonstop "Um sorry hun but Square Enix never releases an unpolished game......". FF15 dlc anyone? I guess it holds true since the DLC was never fucking released. I've really tried to get into FF with the decline of WoW, but i've really given a few of the iterations my all and always quit out of frustration. If the boss isn't a glorified puzzle, it's an instant wipe because you didn't speak to a specific npc beforehand. And the better the graphics get, the less classic fantasy the game is. FF9 is sort of the last good sweetspot between finally getting to learn of one of FF's core characters (Vivi in this case); decent graphics, but also a classical fantasy story.

I managed to get through FF10 with my sanity intact and went on to 9, but quit during the worm boss in the cave or whatever, because the difficulty went from a joke to insta-wipe. And true to FF games, I don't know if it's because I'm lacking an item, a spell, or some story action. "Grind til you beat it" hasn't held true for a single FF game I've played so far. At least in pokemon you can outlevel a gym boss who counters you by grinding, which is kind of the cornerstone of turn-based games like FF. I'll get it for Switch and give it another go, but man, FF is hard to love. At this point I just want to play the old games to see all the mobs I recognize from DFFOO.
