The Final Fantasy Thread

FF13 is an overall very good game and better than the overwhelming vast majority of JRPGs. Stunning visuals and fun combat. I'd play FF13 over like Tales of, Atelier, Xenoblade, Atlus games, etc. It is also the last mainline numbered FF that is even vaguely FF. Sadly the franchise has now not been Final Fantasy for longer than it was. FF16 and the FF7 remakes hold no appeal to me. I expect FF17 to be along the same lines (if it is ever made, given how long it took Square to make Versus XIII, FF16, the FF7 remake games, KH3, and how KH4 will have been in development for 7 or 8 years by the time it finally comes out).
I legit feel like KH4 will be next year. I remember way back, Nomura said something about being annoyed at the constant amount of trailers KH3 got when it wasn't even close to being finished. (Let alone the 2013 announcement trailer before it was even in development.) So my best guess is he wants to wait till it's close before the press tour starts. The dev cycle is kinda weird right now because he's split between FF7-3 and KH4. and there's two major complications I can think of right now.

For KH the mobile game that was supposed to fill in the backstory got cancelled and for FF7-3 they have to make it multiplatform at launch. PS5 exclusivity was convenient because they didn't have to worry about optimization and could just go nuts on the environments.

As for FF9 I have no idea what the hell is going on. That's had like 5 different times they cancelled an announcement for something even though everyone knows it's supposed to be coming. I can only speculate on what the issue is. Maybe it's art style, maybe it's gameplay or plot. It's so weird.

Dont get me wrong, I love 9, but, it really shows the priority when they remake everything and skip 8, the one no one likes. I mean the work is basically done for them, its way easier to remake something that already mostly works than fix something that was broken.

They have a fanbase they wanna keep happy, I get it, but, how much effort from these remakes could be diverted towards new or interesting projects. Like how good could 15 or 16 have been if there were less resources devoted to regurgitating old games that everyone already likes.

As much as I hope 9 gets a remake, I think it's unbecoming of Final Fantasy as a hole to keep doing the safe and predictable thing.

As someone whose seen their favorite game of all time get butchered (VII) i wouldn't wish what we got for anybody.
VII is actually my favorite FF, but despite all the problems with Compilation material I've felt particularly negative about it. Maybe because it never feels like anything dumb is directly done with the old cast, they're just stuck in dumb fan-ficcy scenarios against bad OC villains. Even with all the poor decisions made for VII Remake, the whole shit with the time ghosts means they effectively negated any chance of Remake getting touted by morons as a definitive replacement for the original, so I'm free to ignore it if I want.

But IX is my second-favorite FF, and I feel it's more in danger of a remake doing stupid shit because basically none of the original IX staff are working at Square anymore and just about everything about it doesn't fit well with the sorts of games Square has been making for the past decade plus. It's also more likely to have morons saying it's a definitive replacement for the original, which would make it harder to ignore.

I think my big question for 9 is the scope of it. Is it a full blown remake like 7 or is it some weird 2.0 remaster with upscaled graphics? something like Live A Live I guess.

This is a more recent shift in opinion, everyone liked it at the time and a while afterwards. Last 10ish years that's been changing, but it's good.

It's way too big, they'd "need" to break it into parts again like FF7 if they did a proper remake and even then I hear FF7R doesn't capture the scope of the original, but I haven't played beyond the first boss.

And not a single one of you can defend this game.

So yeah, it's an alright game but they really missed the mark.

How was the Live A Live remaster? I've actually got it here but never got around to playing it.

I really liked it. I bought it before I knew the localization had whitewashed some of the funnier/edgier dialogue, but it's a really interesting idea for an RPG. Haven't played anything quite like it before or since. The pacing is tight and it has a decent amount of replayability. Highly recommend.
