"Final Fantasy 16 ditched turn-based combat to appeal to younger generations, producer says"
“For several console generations now, all character expressions can be done in real-time. Actions such as ‘press the trigger and your character will shoot a gun’ and ‘press the button and your character will swing their sword’ can now be easily expressed without going through a command system.

“It’s now common for gamers younger than me to love such games. As a result, it seems that it does not make sense to go through a command prompt, such as ‘Battle’, to make a decision during a battle.

oh no, it's retarded

After playing Final Fantasy V, I really wish we got at least one more turn-based entry to really flesh out the job system. After hearing people suck it off for years I was really looking forward to playing around with it only to see how limiting the "one innate ability + one custom ability" system really is.
Not to say it wasn't fun, but it's surprising that FF8 (probably one of the weakest entries gameplay-wise) gives you almost total control over your command abilities besides normal attacks, while FF5 is so rigid. I get that the series is (or used to be) about constantly evolving gameplay systems to avoid feeling samey, but man, it's just a shame seeing how homogenized your characters feel in 6, 7, and 8 after playing 5.

Does 12 pull off the job system well? Obviously it isn't turn based but if it still embodies that heavy emphasis on roles, I might give it a shot.

Zodiac Ages’ job system does a lot to balance the game for new players. Perhaps too much

I’m one of those people that likes completely open gameplay so this doesn’t bother me, although the reasoning being retarded, but what does concern me is the excuse about not designing an open world. You guys have had 6 years already. It doesn’t take 15 years to develop an open world game.

I don't remember 12 job system fondly, it felt like you play the same basic character with different skins.

A game that did the job system more comprehensively was the original Bravely Default that allowed you to mix and match job abilities (in a way that can break the game)

“I’m from a generation that grew up with command and turn-based RPGs,” Yoshida said. “I think I understand how interesting and immersive it can be. On the other hand, for the past decade or so, I’ve seen quite a number of opinions saying ‘I don’t understand the attraction of selecting commands in video games’.

“This opinion is only increasing, particularly with younger audiences who do not typically play RPGs.”

Yoshida went on to explain that he believes the evolution in console technology has pushed RPGs towards action-based mechanics rather than turn-based.

“This is not an argument of what is good or bad, but there is a difference based on the player’s preferences and age. Furthermore, there is a big difference between a command system and a turn-based system, and these are often conflated, but are two different concepts.

He added: “RPGs originated with tabletop RPGs, and I think that gaming RPGs were invented by replacing the tabletop discussions with commands in video games."
What a fucking retard! He's talking like the concept of the action RPG is some kind of brand new thing that zoomers prefer. I guess the likes of Ys, Secret of Mana, Diablo, and all the countless action RPGs out there don't exist on whatever planet he came from. And that's from the mouth of the producer? I guess FFXVI's gonna suck balls.

The job system really doesn't make the game better at all. Pretty sure it can be beaten with no jobs allocated whatsoever.

All that software, all those interesting environments, just to fuel big empty maps with little incentive to explore while daisy-chaining enemies together, only having to change tactics for espers or hunts.

After 13,* I am happy that the Gambit system never really got used again, apart from some convoluted examples.

*Which was horrible, the merger f*cked this company so much

They seem to forget that young people made the series a success when it started as a turn based series. Now they want to abandon all the people who grew up with the series for a bunch of ADD-riddled retards who probably weren't going to play the game in the first place. Great strategy. At least Dragon Quest didn't forget what made it a success.

Look, I know there are a bunch of old heads in this thread who probably grew up playing Final Fantasy, but I honestly could give less of shit at this point if the game is action or turn based. Its stupid to demand Final Fantasy to be just one thing anyway since every game is different and they've tried every system under the sun already. I just want the game to be GOOD damnit!

Why not just make action spinoffs? At least create more turn-based spinoffs to compensate, but no, those are mostly not turn-based either.

Yoshida has had a lot of garbage takes regarding FFXVI. He used the covid excuse for delaying FFXVI. No, you’re part of Squeenix, you guys delay shit all the time.

If statements from forever ago are to be believed Square Enix is retarded and needed literal months of bullshit to set their shit up so people can work properly during COVID, because Japan (or SE anyway) doesn't believe in working from home as much as places like America does, and COVID forced people to work from home. So they had to spend months trying to set people up so they could work from home during COVID years, this delayed some patches throughout the entirety of FFXIV's development including them being forced to cut entire patch content they had planned which hadn't really happened before.

This is also why FFXIV: Endwalker was delayed by months as well to the point the usual Summer-ish release dates for FFXIV expansions to almost the end of the year in 2021.

So COVID could have legitimately delayed things to some degree because SE is retarded due to some kind of work culture being too rigid for people working at home.

I agree but I do think it’s wild how they apparently won’t do turn-based entries ever again.
Was the last turn-based mainline entry X? That’s older than 9/11.
I also agree, and that's coming from someone that doesn't want to play a standard JRPG. I don't get why Square seems to have a problem with the older turn based formula for this series considering its presence in Dragon Quest, Bravely Default, etc. And that's just with games they've made. There have also been recent Pokemon and Persona games that maintained the formula as well, so they're just being disingenuous. There are clearly some people among the next generation of gamers that have no problem with this format.
