The Final Fantasy Thread

I am having a blast playing the FF7 Nes demake. I just got out of Midgar and it takes me back to the days of 2d final fantasy. The detail of weapons and materas leveling up with use is a feature I wish was added to older ff games.

Beat FF9 as a kid, but being a dumb kid, I never figured out how to fight Ozma.

Nearly 20 years go by, I hear constantly in this span of time "like dood Ozma is like da hardest Final Fantasy boss, it's like smart and shit and doesn't follow the rules". Recently I revisit the game with the intention of getting 100% achievements. I reach Ozma with about what you would expect for a "non challenge run" kind of fight (Everyone's 80+, ultimate weapons, dark resist/absorb gear, Dragon Cresent, Thievery and Frog Drop all at 9999, ect).

First fight, opens with Meteor. That's that, because Meteor is pure bullshit made explicitly to nuke even a maxed party.

Second fight... he just spams Berserk the whole time... on a team of full Auto-Reflect... and he's dead before Quina can even finish getting Auto-Life on everyone.

There is no "difficulty" here, this is RNG and only RNG. Fuck everyone who talked up this stupid fucking ball of ass.

Well, i'm starting playing FF8 and dear lord...
The Junction system is broken as fuck.
FF8 taught me how broken berserk effects could be

Did you do all the friendly gem monsters?

Yep, but even with that done and everyone geared to the teeth, Meteor would leave me with 2 alive on like 100 HP, which he then Flared or something similar before I could get a single action in. With my experience with Meteor, part of me feels it should just cut to a "Game Over" instead of wasting my time with the animation. As far as I can tell, it's the "I win, fuck you" button.

You had shadow absorbing equipment equiped right? Cause meteor is shadow damage iirc

Had that too. I just double checked and Meteor is a non-elemental attack that deals damage (for Ozma) in a range of 110-9999. (Stolen from the wiki), so sometimes it'll be a dinky dud and kills one member, or a straight up nuke, but on my experience alone, I'd say 7000 is the average damage you're gonna see, and thats more than enough to 1 shot most characters at 99. The more I learn about him, the more I genuinely hate this boss and the "mysticism" about him, it's just coin flips.

Now it's been a hot minute since I played FF9, but I seem to recall that if you try to equip items that absorb an element, the game will simply not have him cast spells of that type, thus making Meteor more likely to occur.

Still think the biggest bullshit in that game is getting Excalibur 2. Thunder Slash not working properly is a close second.

I was under the assumption that's how it worked too, but then he proceeded to Berserk spam on Reflects when I deliberately left Poison immunity off to play around the "adjusting to your loadouts" I've heard about him. May just be for elemental spells, and I get they can't just have him spam Meteor the entire fight, but it seems like really bad design if they still allowed him to roll Berserk 5 got damn times in row when it has zero effect, especially when an viable option (poison) exists.

Yeah, fuck Excalibur 2. If it wasn't for the fact the remasters have a "speed up" feature that doesn't effect the play timer and the "auto 9999 damage" if you want to go even faster, I wouldn't even bother trying to get 100% achievements. Getting that thing at real time game speed requires a level of autism I do not possess and thanks to how slow the game runs at its native speed, getting to that point in under 12 hours is such a tight time limit for anyone that's not a diehard spedrunner that nothing about the item can even make it worth the effort.

Or you could leave the game running for 2 years, but fuck that, that's legitimately retarded.

Nah one of the strats i remember to cheese Omza is to equip dark absorbing stuff and have vivi countercast it since for some reason he wouldnt absorb that version

Ozma counters with either Berserk or Curaga and then he probably threw in a few Berserks on his actions for good measure.

And yes, Ozma is just pure RNG. Meteor -> Curse -> Meteor will wipe you every time. The strategy is to just do as much dps as possible before the bullshit comes for you.

Finally going through FF7 and jesus fuck the Materia system is busted. I went in mostly blind minus the super obvious spoilers, so I wasn't aware of how easily you can completely rip the game in two. Along with this, if you get Knights of the Round, you just shit over the rest of the game's balancing lmao. The only thing you have to realistically worry about are debuffs and mana consumption, but you don't have to worry about those if you kill them in one hit. I like it though, Chocobo Eugenics has never felt more satisfiying. I can only hope that I can make my nigga Vincent busted in the remake too (if he's even in the remakes yet).

The PC port + 7th Heaven is also way better than I thought it would be and was pretty pain-free to install and run. If only Square cared enough to put quality into the original releases instead of just porting the mobile version to PC, but it wouldn't be Square if they didn't put the bare minimum into PC ports.

My only problem with the Materia system/FF8 system was the fact that it made everyone almost the same outside of Limit Breaks and a few pieces of equipment. Why even have more than 3 people as PC's if you can just switch things around to make everyone almost the same.

To be fair, it was like that in Final Fantasy VI where everyone in my party was just spamming Ultima for the Kefka fight. Final Fantasy games aren't known for their difficulty or balancing. I still think the Job System is the best gameplay system the series ever introduced and it better make an appearance in a new Final Fantasy game (that isnt an mmo)

That's a bad example though because you just chose to play FF6 that way. You can fight Kefka quite well by having Edgar kitted out to do insane damage with dual-wield or machines, you can have Sabin spamming Bum Rush, Setzer doing multi-hits with the Loaded Dice, Shadow throwing strong weapons, Gau or Strago spamming top-tier enemy spells (if you took the time to get them), and Terra, Celes, and Relm doing all kinds of white magic, black magic, and summoning. FF6 characters are highly individualized and you have plenty of options with their unique mechanics. Much as I love FF7 [and loathe FF8] the materia and junction systems do make it so the only character differences are limit breaks and weapon selection.
