The Final Fantasy Thread

It may not be a trash heap but there is absolutely nothing "Final Fantasy" about XVI aside from the setting and some classic monsters/summons/chocobos. The game is so far removed from what makes a FF game FF that it have just been called anything else.
What is a Final Fantasy game?

I think most people would consider a FF game to be a game that uses the traditional leveling system in JRPG's as well as being to change your character's entire equipment/gear, whereas XVI only lets you change your character's sword and "accessory" which is your belt.

Is that all Final Fantasy can/should be?

Beyond the foundation of having to kill things to get stronger (which FF16 has) you cannot tell me with a straight face that Final Fantasy uses traditional leveling systems when it comes to gaining meaningful power. Likewise you cannot tell me equipment was anything more than glorified stat sticks in the majority of titles.

Stat increases are supplementary when it comes to being successful in an FF game. Gaining more utility in your party's arsenal with spells like cure or reflect have always been more important in the grand scheme of things and EVERY SINGLE FF game has you acquire or upgrade those tools in a different manner. FF16s customization is not its equipment, its the Eikon abilities which just like any other FF secondary system is more impactful to your gameplay than leveling up.

While there is synergy with certain moves and a lot of flexibility with how you equip them, there isn't many meaningful choices with how you build Clive, THAT is FF16s flaw. It has nothing to do with the game not being a "traditional" RPG and more to do with not having enough RPG in general.

Regardless if you play FF where you are over leveled and just hit attack until everything in the game dies how is that any different than FF16 where you ignore how all the different eikon abilities interact and just hit things till they die.

Yes if you want to make something that isn't a JRPG call it something else.

The people who play like that are fucking outright bad at the game. The last Final Fantasy game I played I beat the Final Ultimate Uber Boss with the highest character on level 60.

16 turned me off by the combat alone, it's just the same terrible style as 15 was. Call me if they ever make an oldschool ATB FF game again.
Also the setting didn't excite me either.
I wouldn't say it was worse then 15 combat wise but 15 had better characters and better integration of the fantasy elements. Also 16s combat just didn't have enough variation. Id compare it to dmc 2 in terms of how limited it feels. You don't even get a sub weapon till almost the end of the game

Um. Are you talking about 13 3? Because even then it's nothing like 7R combat
13-3 is basically 10-2 but single character, which is still shit, i have to modify the code to speed up the game 3x to make the combat tolerable. 7R is basically 13 with fuck awful paradigm shift removed but added more retardation and still have the retarded as shit stagger bullshit which makes combat padded as hell. anyone praising 7R combat has been hit too many times in the head and probably needed more hits to the head

I haven’t been involved in much fandoms since before troons ruined everything. What’s the problem with FF7 fanbase?
which FF7 fanbase though? the TifaxCloud shippers, AerithxCloud shippers, the Aerith fans, the Aeris fans, the CloudxZack shippers, the CloudxSephiroth shippers, the its all a dream nutjobs, the nuFF7 fans, the Advent Children fans...

Alright so this dropped recently and was pretty great.

it covers the full timeline of issues, info and interviews of what went wrong with versus. why it was conceptualized, leaks and more details overall of what was cut and where it sits now .

Basically the problem with versus was the opposite of Duke nukem forever. Instead of constantly changing engines and never getting anything done. They stuck with one really shitty and inflexible engine until they changed over to 15. Also they had a high amount of ambition that severely underestimated the difference and realities of next gen development. Most importantly Nomura kept getting his team stolen out from under him to make FF13 and later fix FF14. But that's only really half the story and it is cool to see all the drama properly exposed.

Recently played through Final Fantasy I & II for PSP, which were the first mainline games that I've ever actually finished, (I mostly stuck to the various spin-offs as a kid.) Which versions of FF III & IV do you guys think are superior: PSP, DS or Pixel Remaster?

I take it that Square learned their lesson and they (hopefully) won't do anything as retarded as holding their games hostage on the Epic Scam Store again.
they said a few months ago that they're 100% done with exclusivity after the latest ff7 didn't make enough. They suffered a major profit drop for the year of like 70% or something
