The Final Fantasy Thread

I might have to try Lightning Returns. I actually did enjoy 13 and 13-2 though. Not my favorites by any means, but worth the $5 I paid for them.

FFVIII was my favorite. A lot of people talk shit about the game because they hated the junction and draw system. It does take some getting used to, but I absolutely adored the plot even though it was mostly just a sappy love story and the main antagonist is one of my favorites in the whole series.
Something about Ultimecia's mystery surrounding who she really it and what her past was as well as the world she lived in before she merged time together was fascinating as well as all the speculation that was done regarding her and how for the most part she was an unseen villain manipulating things and people from the shadows. The world of FFVIII itself was interesting and I enjoyed the concept of magic and the origin of the sorceress'

Currently I'm playing FFXIV (if there are any players out there who are looking for new friends, hmu), and the recent Eden raid has a couple of tributes to FFVIII that have made me very happy.

Final Fantasy 3 had a fucking awful last dungeon with a random encounter happening every single step.

To beat it, I used an action replay with the code to turn off random encounters and it still took me 40 minutes.

The biggest problem with III's last dungeon is how fucking long it is. Not only do you have to climb up to fight Xande, which is already the length of a normal dungeon prior to that point, but then you have to go through the world of darkness and fight four more bosses that will absolutely wreck your shit if you're even slightly underleveled before you can even fight the Cloud of Darkness, who's even harder than all of them.

It isn't so much the fights themselves that's the problem in my opinion, since that can be solved with grinding, but if you die at any point you have to do it all over again, and there's a point of no return after fighting Xande. There's no room for error, either you beat it in one clean shot or you get booted back to the beginning.

The one thing I can say is okay about it is that one of the enemies in the opening tower section presents the best grinding spot in the entire game. If you come across a Bluck, it will summon Kum Kums (yes that is actually what they're called) indefinitely. Neither of these enemies present much of a threat so you can just have the Bluck spawn more Kum Kums for easy EXP. It's how I leveled up enough to actually beat the game.

Even Sakaguchi hated it and wished he could have done it differently.

Okay. I played ff1/2 back in the day but never got back into the series after it moved off Nintendo. (Despite having sony consoles i just never picked it back up ) I've been wanting to get into the series lately but I'm a bit overwhelmed with it. Any advice on what game to start at/which to skip/core titles etc? Where do the movies fit in? Do I have to play Kingdom Hearts too?

I never understand why games (or anything else for that matter) get released any day other than Friday, at least in the UK. Friday is pay day for a lot of people here who get paid weekly, who tend to be young and therefore the target market. There's probably some weird reason, but still.
Do you not have money any other day of the week? Also, when you get paid on Friday, when do you you top up your e-payment method?

(I do agree Friday releases are a good idea, because of impulse purchases. I will instabuy a full-price game I'm going to play right now. I won't buy one I may or may not have time to play five days from now.)

Pay day is the best day for impulse purchasing. You know what your budget for the week ahead is so you know you can get away with spending on other stuff. As for epayment, generally in the UK people pay online using debit accounts which your wages go directly into so there is no 'topping up' required.

Depends on what you want.

If I only use the first ten games to compare:

I is bare bones in story and gameplay, but it introduces class FF jobs and other prominent story elements such as the Crystals.
II is the first one with an actual story and characters (tho they're still pretty bare bones), but the leveling system is a point of contention.
III introduces job switching using Crystals, which allows each character to be any job you want them to be.
IV has a more involved story and back to characters with only one distinct job.
V has an evolved version of III's job system, which allows you to mix and match abilities from mastered jobs.
VI is more or less the same as IV, involved story and characters with one distinct job.
VII is the first 3D game and it shows. Involved story and etc.
VIII is more of the same, but junctioning and drawing are a point of contention.
IX is a love letter to the classic FFs. It's a good game, but I wouldn't play it first because a lot of references would fly over one's head.
X is the first one with voice acting and controllable summons.

For classic games, IV-V-VI are all a good place to start. If you can look past the graphics, VII is also a good place to start. If you want something modern but not too much, X might be it. Every game takes place in its own world, so it doesn't really matter where you start.

There are only three movies.

Spirits Within is its own thing. Apart from some references, it doesn't have much to do with any game in the series.
Advent Children is a sequel to FFVII.
Kingsglaive is a prequel to FFXV.

Kingdom Hearts is its own thing. If you want to see Disney characters and FF characters in the same world, I guess this is for you. It's easily ignored if you want to focus on FF. I don't know much about it, but Disney stuff is more prominent than FF anyway (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

6 is the best 2d Final Fantasy, some people say 4 but it's entirely dependent on which version of 4 you're playing. Because there are 4 different versions of Final Fantasy 4. Easy Type(which was never released in America), Hard Type(which was released as part of Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PS1 along with Chrono Trigger), USA(which is the North American SNES release and was different from the Japanese one) and the Complete Edition which has DLC shit added decades after the original release and it was a tedious post game.

Now I've played through all 4 versions of 4 and I never really cared for them because outside of Easy type they're all a pain in the ass in their own way. They have massive massive shifts in difficulty spikes where you need to spend a ton of time grinding and there's no real efficient way to do so because the surrounding enemies don't give enough EXP so to get somewhere to grind you gotta backtrack.

If you want a solid string of hits go for 7,8,9, 10, and 10-2. Some people hate 8 but I don't, it's an interesting enough game and you can fucking break the combat system to pieces early on by junctioning 99 Ultima to attack and just fucking decimating everything because an early game enemy's card can be converted into ultima spells. Triple Triad from 8 is also a very good minigame. But yeah Junction ultima to attack ASAP and that breaks whatever convoluted bullshit the battle system throws at you. And there will be bullshit, especially if you want to collect all the Guardian Forces, Bahamut's dungeon is a pain in the fucking ass to get through under normal conditions so being able to oneshot a load of shit helps. 8 has a very interesting world to explore and it certainly did the future world mixed with fantasy better than 13 did.

I've played a translated rom of the original Japanese release of FF4 and thought the difficulty was OK. But when I played the DS remake I got brick walled by a difficulty spike and quit. Been meaning to go back to that sometime. Those character models are an eyesore though.

No, you don't have to play Kingdom Hearts, The Spirits Within movie is only Final Fantasy in name only, it has nothing to do with the series. Advent Children is a sort of sequel to FFVII. I didn't much care for it, but you might give it a watch if you end up playing and liking FFVII.

As for games, my favorites are X, IX, VI and IV. I'd suggest trying any of those except nine, as someone already said it's perfectly playable, bit it's a coda to the old guard of Final Fantasy and has a ton of references and Easter eggs that'll go over your head until you play more games in the series.

Four would probably be my suggestion to try first. It's not a very difficult game, the story and characters are well done for the time period it came out, not a ton n of side stuff, it's a good beginner game to dip your toe in. I'd suggest the PSP remake. The DS version is good as well, but they completely rebuilt it from the ground up, whereas the PSP version is traditional sprite based.

I love ff4 DS because it hates you and is not shy about letting you know it. Also the game doesn't explain shit, if you go in without researching how augments are gained you're gonna get raped.
