The Final Fantasy Thread

The problem with Nomura is he can create a good concept but he will burn out during the production and execution.
The Fabula Nova Crystalis thing is so delayed that he got yeeted out from his own project.
He should stick what he do best, Character designs.
What they originally hired him for. Then they realized he won them the Hot Topic crowd singlehandedly.

Like I said, Nojima isn't that great either but he's treated like a genius.
By who? Everyone fucking panics in whatever games he's involved in because of Final Fantasy X-2.5. Yeah, he wrote Final Fantasy VII, but its important to remember that unlike the novel, I wager square executives were a lot more stringent in what passes for acceptable ideas (at least back then). Probably telling to fuck off with all his retarded ideas.

If anyone in Square is treated as a sacred cow, it's probably the Final Fantasy XIV staff.
Even Sakaguchi made very bad calls despite my overall preference for his era.
I'm interested in what bad calls? I mean, I guess the Spirits within movie. Personally, I'm more ambivalent with the Mistwalker games he made for Xbox360. Good gameplay but Blue Dragon has a dumb plot and Lost Odyssey's main story is lackluster outside the thousand year of dreams.

Well, decided to pick up FF7R, anything I should know in particular about the game? Specifically, how much stuff is missable without a guide or obtuse knowledge? And is the Yuffie stuff worth it?

Seems like people take his word and name as gilded in my experience. Maybe I am wrong. He gets nowhere near the flack of Nomura even when he writes things far worse than anything Nomura made.

All that. I am sure there are extenuating circumstances in all cases but I don't know them. Seems like Square promotes people to their incompetence. Ergo Sakaguchi is in charge of a movie project. Nomura oversees everything.

It feels like Kingdom Hearts, I guess. Attacks are used to build up the ATB gauge so you can use your hotkey abilities, and the characters you do get play radically different from each other. Cloud functions best as a melee tank, Barret is a ranged DPS tank (which also makes him the best White mage character), Tifa should be using her own personal buff so her Triangle attack builds the stagger gauge multiplier higher, and Aerith can buff the ground under her.

General elemental weakness for trash mobs is: Fire kills humans and ghosts, Ice kills beasts, Wind works on flying types, and Thunder kills machines. Hard mode is where the game really feels like how the developers want you to play the game since that's how you get the skill points to max every weapon out. In addition to preparing elemental materia to weapons and armor, HP materia becomes a necessity since the damage output goes up so high.

Remake as a story definitely feels like a fanfiction of the original game and you can tell just by how thirsty Jessie is in this game. The new additional plot points really drag the pacing down and in some cases, nerf the impact the original game's big events had. Also, I will always be jarred at seeing the Midgar slums during the daytime.

Nothing's really missable. Enemies can have cool shit to steal, the scan materia will tell you most things about enemies, including any that have cool gear. Materia may seem limited, but there's still cool combos to be had, my favorite being the "Reusable Bomb" where you pair Subversion Materia and Added Effect in your armor slots and then pair Enemy Skill with HP Drain.

Combat-wise, characters feel limited at first, but use that time to figure out their attacks and how you can chain and use them, later on you'll want to learn how to weave their skills in.

Cloud's cool in that he can go full phys, mage or both very easily and his stance system is really simple. Operator is normal swordsmanship and focuses on faster strikes hitting in front of him, hold Square and you get a two hit spin that helps gap close. Punisher mode has a counter when switching into it and a quick sword swipe when switching out. You can use the counter by holding the Guard button. In Punisher he has slower, wider swiping attacks that hit multiple times and holding Square makes him do a close range attack that if it lands, gives him Berserk for a few seconds, learning how to use this status can lead to better damage.

Barret is as said, a ranged DPS tank and therefore a great White Mage, but he can also be built for AMAZING physical damage and the super armor to stick to foes and crush them.

Tifa has a lot of interesting combo play and her Chi mechanic and later skills help you rack up Stagger Damage bonus, she's very mobile and with the Parry materia can turn that mobility into damage.

Aerith seems boring, but she can put out amazing damage if you swap to her and use her basic attacks to build ATB and then pair it with Arcane Ward. She has great skills that range from extra dps, to better burst, action economy and even a projectile shield. She puts out damage and as long as you give her MP Drain and use Soul Drain right, you'll see it sustain itself long enough to end a fight.

the absolute meat of the amazing combat is imo how the characters can play and change.

Edit: Is Yuffie worth it? UH, how much did you like Yuffie and how much did you tolerate Dirge of WTF was this a PS2 game? I like both these things, for their own merits, so I'd say it's pretty cool.

Pretty sure that's a culture thing - people they can't outright shitcan get "promoted" to positions of uselessness, like what happened to Gunpei Yokoi at Nintendo.

If we're talking about post-Square, the way he handled the Terra Battle series ended in its death. Created a sequel instead of just adding it to the existing game, messing with people's muscle memory, created a Clash of Kings clone where the main gimmick is claymation. I just hope Fantasian fares better.

Now that I think about it, with the episodic way they're releasing the game Vincent's portion could very well be a slight retelling/make of DoC.

I kind of want that.

I think a lot of the criticisms about what it changes, what it drags out and so forth are true, the remake does that. I think the things it stretches out are interesting as I wanted to see and know more of Midgar and the supporting cast for it. I think your sentiment on Vincent getting drawn out and it being interesting is the possible good that can come from this approach. Just think, Yuffie got a DLC, just imagine what like Red XII or Cait Sith can get. We already got a taste of something that with polish can be fun with stealth sections in DoC.

Also, I just really love the combat in FF7R.

There's chapter select so nothing is missable, you're going to have to run through parts of the game a few times to get all the dresses. Each chapter has a indicator how many of the stat collectables are left

It might not hurt to look up build guides either.

So uh, UPDATE. My roommate thought it’d be great fun to completely wipe my files so that he could download some huge ass game, on my phone, without my personal permission, while I was out visiting somewhere. I had just gotten the Earth Gem completed and kicked the Lich’s ass, and now I have 0 motivation.

So, my other friend is recommending I play 2 games for the “Full 2D and 3D experience.” I know nothing about FF VI/6 or FF IX/9, but these are the ones he recommended I go try for myself to get the best of both worlds.

What games do you guys recommend? It has been a long day and a 2 paragraph little blurb would be just fine. If there’s a specific version of the game, then I will look into it (Example, FF1 NES v.s FF1 PSP).

EDIT: it is my fault I didn’t passlock it considering his impulsivity and batshit reasoning, tbh. I’m just tired. Man.

Sorry to hear that. Your friend is a dope-fiend.
Play 6 and 7. 9 I think is a risk. You might love it, you might hate it. It's not a good entry point because it superficially validates what outsiders typically say jrpgs are like (tedious, anime tone, etc).
And before anyone says "omg I love 9 how dare you", I do too. Just being realistic I feel.
6 is a good retro styled game and 7 is really quickly paced.

Thank you. I have played 7. So I guess I’ll start with 6. What’s the best platform for it or console emulation (SNES, GBA)?
Please tell me you screen-lock your phone.
I don’t. Well. I do. But having it still be the standard 1234 code pattern I got since I bought the damn thing isn’t really a lock at all as much as it is a minor nuisance.

Final Fantasy VI is an easy one: the Game Boy Advance version. Good retranslation, classic graphics, and an extra dungeon in the post-game if you really liked it. The sound has some quality issues that bothered people enough to make a patch for the rom, but it never personally bothered me.

Other versions of FFVI are the SNES (fine, but no extras); PS1 (no extras except a couple of FMVs that mean nothing to you; also horrible loading times), and PC/mobile (terrible redesigned graphics and menus designed for a touch screen). Just play the GBA version.

Final Fantasy IX, on the other hand, is a slow game through and through. It's very good, but I'd really recommend you start with 6. Anyway, I've heard the Switch and Xbox One versions have weird slowdown here and there, so that's out. The Android version seemed fine to me. If the PC version doesn't have slowdown problems, I'd just suggest that one. The original PS1 version ran fine, but I don't recommend it just because it doesn't have a speedup button like in the modern releases, which you'll really need, since I'm not joking about FF9 being slow as fuck. Even the battles do a thing where they're introduced with the camera swinging around from different angles before you can even input commands. The game really isn't for the impatient at all.

Though, then again, the PS1 version's fine if you're planning to play it on an emulator with its own speedup button. It really is that vital to that game.

I am a heathen who likes the gba so don't ask me. I think visualboy advance is a nice and easy emulator to use so I use it.

This cannot be overstated. When people hear "it's slow" they often think "the story has a prolonged pace" when the reality is "that but also the game runs slowly too."
