Well, decided to pick up FF7R, anything I should know in particular about the game? Specifically, how much stuff is missable without a guide or obtuse knowledge? And is the Yuffie stuff worth it?
Nothing's really missable. Enemies can have cool shit to steal, the scan materia will tell you most things about enemies, including any that have cool gear. Materia may seem limited, but there's still cool combos to be had, my favorite being the "Reusable Bomb" where you pair Subversion Materia and Added Effect in your armor slots and then pair Enemy Skill with HP Drain.
Combat-wise, characters feel limited at first, but use that time to figure out their attacks and how you can chain and use them, later on you'll want to learn how to weave their skills in.
Cloud's cool in that he can go full phys, mage or both very easily and his stance system is really simple. Operator is normal swordsmanship and focuses on faster strikes hitting in front of him, hold Square and you get a two hit spin that helps gap close. Punisher mode has a counter when switching into it and a quick sword swipe when switching out. You can use the counter by holding the Guard button. In Punisher he has slower, wider swiping attacks that hit multiple times and holding Square makes him do a close range attack that if it lands, gives him Berserk for a few seconds, learning how to use this status can lead to better damage.
Barret is as said, a ranged DPS tank and therefore a great White Mage, but he can also be built for AMAZING physical damage and the super armor to stick to foes and crush them.
Tifa has a lot of interesting combo play and her Chi mechanic and later skills help you rack up Stagger Damage bonus, she's very mobile and with the Parry materia can turn that mobility into damage.
Aerith seems boring, but she can put out amazing damage if you swap to her and use her basic attacks to build ATB and then pair it with Arcane Ward. She has great skills that range from extra dps, to better burst, action economy and even a projectile shield. She puts out damage and as long as you give her MP Drain and use Soul Drain right, you'll see it sustain itself long enough to end a fight.
the absolute meat of the amazing combat is imo how the characters can play and change.
Edit: Is Yuffie worth it? UH, how much did you like Yuffie and how much did you tolerate Dirge of WTF was this a PS2 game? I like both these things, for their own merits, so I'd say it's pretty cool.
