The role of government is not to prevent crime, it is to punish criminals.

Everything the government has done to try and prevent crime has been shit.

The TSA? Ounce limitations on tubes when traveling? Taking your shoes off at the airport? That is attempting to prevent crime.

The PATRIOT Act? The NSA collecting all your Metadata and storing it? Banks being required to know all your personal information to try and catch money launderers and terrorists? That is attempting to prevent crime.

Again, most murders and massacres are done by handguns. Rifles accounted for only 3% of all firearm murders in 2020. The stats for that are in the thread.

And besides, US has tried the ban you are suggesting in 1994. All studies found it had no effect. See, for example, this study, that found that not only did it have no effect, but that gun control causes in fact more gun deaths.
