The Harry Potter Fandom

i love the harry potter series; i enjoy the books more but i have a soft spot for the movies as well.

a popular thing in this fandom is arguing about snape's innocence and if he deserves to be revered by harry in the end. i personally think he's a creep, but some people are super convinced he's a romantic angel for "protecting harry for lily". those fans are RABID about their love for snape and it's really unerving how offended they get if you even suggest his love for lily is impure.

then there are fan's about snape like redpassion. she's not as into snape as she was a few years ago but. just look.

Oh shit, it's the lady who's in love with Louis XVI!

"fixing" fanart of others without being allowed to do so is a shitty thing to do. Fuck race obsessed SJW. Write your own books! Draw your own fanart, assholes!

Yeah but things like the random reference to Tom Bombadil make me kinda suspicious. Either way, I totally ship Tara and Tyce.
I think it's beyond reasonable question that "My Immortal" is a trollfic. There are stealthy references to things like Tom Bombadil and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," and the fact that Tara keeps "mistakenly" writing Cornelius Fudge's name as "Cornelio Fuck"-- things like that.

That said, it's still a masterpiece of the genre. I don't think I'll ever forget the first time I read the passage where Dumbledore pops out from behind a tree and screams, "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU MOTHERFUKERS!" That was the momen I knew I'd found something truly great.

Harry Potter meets the Lord?
Another excellent badfic. I think my favorite thing about it is the fact that it just tosses everything-- from the war with Voldemort, Harry's various complexes about his parents, his friendships with Ron and Hermione and Dumbledore-- everything, so casually.

ah YES i remember when this was floating around tumblr and how everyone was praising the person who edited it. it seemed really shitty to just edit someone's art like that even if you disagree. :^/

there's rly no reason to get riled up over nonwhite headcanons, either. but canonically they're white, jk rowling PICKED the actors, if hermione was meant to be black she would be in the movie. sjws don't like when you point this out. headcanons = cool! acting like your hcs are The Law and like the author's intent doesn't matter = what.

I used to lurk on fandomwank when I was a young'n (young enough not to be able to have an account). I know it might be nostalgia talking, but Potter fandom just isn't the same as it used to be in the fandom's heyday. That shit was golden. Snapewives, Cassandra Claire, Ms Scribe, 90% of anything Harmonians did or said... The old fandomwank wiki is only available an archive but it's full of grade A vintage internet drama.

These days they just seem to get up to the same tumblr SJW nonsense every fandom of a certain size does.

Snape was more of an "anti-hero", like Rowling said. Actually, if you think about it, he was something of a lolcow.

Snape was okay with letting a man and a BABY die so he could pick up the man's wife/baby's mother on the rebound. Maximum lolcow. Couldn't you just see Chris or one of the Loveshies doing something like that?

Yep. He bullied the hell out of Neville, and almost poisoned his toad. He let the entire school know that Remus was a werewolf, screwing him out of the only decent job he had had in years. He once punished Hermione for giving him the correct answer, FFS!!! (When she told him the signs of a werewolf, he took points off and called her a know-at-all). THEN he made fun of her looks when Malfoy messed up her teeth and he said he didn't see a difference. He made that hateful remark to Tonks about her patronus, knowing how depressed she was.

Yeah, he may have been on the good side, and I feel sorry for him as a kid, but dude was a major douchebag.

There was a girl that I was friends with since high school who I tried to date after we graduated. She was REALLY into the Harry Potter fandom and a frequent poster on one of the bigger Potter forums. She was the reason I found out that fanfic was a thing, because she spent most of her time on the internet reading Potter fan fiction. She rarely left the house and didn't have a job or go to college. After a while I gave up on trying to get her to date me because I realized she was a lost cause socially. I moved on, got married, have a family, and so on. She moved on as well...to Twilight. She still lives in her mother's basement, is still unmarried but now has a boyfriend apparently and a job, but she rarely does anything with her boyfriend and still spends most of her free time on her computer reading fanfic and having hardly any social life to speak of. It is really sad how some people can get into fandoms to the point that it literally consumes their life.

This is one of my biggest gripes with the idea of fandoms: you don't get to decide how the story goes. The Harry Potter series is JK Rowling's story, and whatever she says, goes, end of. You can't just decide that "actually these two characters love each other" or "actually this character had a different color of skin" if they're not your characters. Personally I'd have no problem with a black Hermione, but if JK Rowling says she's white, then she's white.

Granted, the idea of the author being the "word of god" gets a bit fuzzier with shared universes and the idea of "canon", like in Star Wars where there's twenty billion books written by hundreds of different authors. This leads to very different interpretations of characters like Han Solo: one writer might portray him as a selfish asshole, then another shows him to be a caring guy who just does his job to pay the bills. As a result, most Star Wars books read like glorified fan fiction with schizophrenic characters, and Disney has wisely declared that most of them 'never happened'.

Actually, several things Snape does remind me of different lolcows. He hangs out with the Riddle Youth at Hogwarts so he can be popular, much like an edgelord/Internet Tough Guy, thinks his crush owes him reciprocation despite saying downright nasty things to her (Chris and Megan, anyone?), and the aforementioned thing with setting James up to die which reminds me of a Loveshy.

Actually, thinking of Snape as a lolcow kind of explains things. The Marauders are trolls who occasionally cross the lines of good taste, and Lily's a white knight who eventually gives up on him.

It's too bad Journalfen is down; hms_stfu had some pretty good stuff about some HP lolcows. Mostly either Harmonians or Snapefen. The downside is that most HP-focused lolcows don't produce much in the way of new content, the upside is that there's a long backlog if you want to dig through it.

On the bad fanfiction front... My Immortal isn't that bad, all things considered, and it's almost definitely a troll. The Rose Potter series, on the other hand, is sincere, and features a female version of Harry that's also a sociopathic ninja druid nudist. It alternates between horrifying and incredibly boring, as large chunks of it are straight-up plagiarized from the original.

And then there's Neil. Warning: basically straight-up CP. Link goes to a sporking of it.

I think Neil needs a little more explaining than just that.

Neil wrote about nudists in Hogwarts. Itself, ehhh, you know. Weird fanfic shit. The problem is that he very much fetishizes said nudism [as being done SOLELY by underage girls] and thinks that adult Hermione and Harry would have absolutely no problem with being molested by their adopted nudist children. Not to mention some ridiculous stupidity like Hermione getting her breast eaten by the flying teacher who's a raging lesbian.

Really, the guy goes so far into the fetish that he's the only acceptable target of that site - as in, outside actually hurting him, you can say whatever you want about him. Stephenie Meyer doesn't get that, and she writes about human-hating characters and settings.

You forgot to mention the two 12 year olds who go down on each other.
