Yeah,Isn't that nuts? I suspect that most of us here are invested in Squeenix due to loving Squaresoft in the 90's. At this point, I've been routinely disappointed by Square Enix's releases for twice as long as I was enjoying them...but the old stuff was so good that I can't fully give up on them like some kind of battered wife who keeps going back to her husband.
What would be great is if they re-use the assets after the new trilogy is done and do a proper FF7 remake, turn-based battles and all. They'd have the bulk of the work done already.Without spoiling anything: It's not actually a remake. It's more akin to a reimagining, but the original still occurred and is canon to the remake. If you haven't played the original, then you won't be able to pick up on it & it shouldn't ruin anything for you, but there are a lot of points where things play out differently from the original and the characters are somewhat aware of that.
It's an interesting way to keep the game fresh for those of us who obsessively played the original while still releasing something approachable for newbies without 25+ years of history with the game. I'm not a fan of it, and would have preferred a 1:1 remake, but I can see what they were going for. If you enjoy the remake, then try the ps1 version and this will all make sense + add a lot of context for the final part of the remake.
