They probably already know more than you would think. And just going by what they have said we can surmise a bit.

We know when it happened. The moment they lost contact and telemetry, which according to James Cameron were two entirely different independent systems. With their own power. So we know when.

They can estimate the depth that it happened based on the debris field. Radius of Debris Field = 1/2 depth at which the shit came off.

They have visually identified the two titanium dome end caps. Which means they have 1 of the three main failure vectors, and based on its condition can surmise which of the other two happened. If the Domes are reasonably intact than the failure was the Carbon Fiber or the point where the domes were glued to the Carbon Fiber. If it was the porthole window that failed that will be obvious in that dome piece. If the Carbon Fiber itself failed most of the main hull debris will be in itty bitty black chunks. When it fails Carbon Fiber shatters into dust. If they fin larger pieces of Carbon Fiber and the front dome is intact it was likely the bonding seal.

The reason Ballard did it the first time was, besides finding it being his lifelong hobby, the US Navy was paying for it and was using his Titanic Search as the cover story for his actual mission. WHich was to fidn and survey the two sunken American Nuclear Subs, USS Thresher and USS Scorpion. And to test out all of his newly developed gear for deep sea search and retrieval. Sometimes the tinfloi hat types are correct. Ballard and Woods Hole are deeply intertwined with the Super Secret parts of the Navy that nobody talks about.

Probably because these guys are into new things. Old stuff that works is fine and all but new is where they get their kicks. Most people do find newness interesting but it's more to guys like these. They just adore the feeling of finding something new and different, many actually made their fame and/or fortune by following these feelings. They find new tech basically inherently so interesting that things like safety protocol or industry standards are just in their way. They really hate being slowed down and fear that others get there first or they loose the drive because the shit they are into now gets old.

Most are still smart enough to know there is a risk and have capacity work in long term but chasing that high is so so tempting. They are unlike to go totally coco bananas but are perfectly willing to cut corners even when there are other safer options. They are adrenaline junkies, just bit different from the usual extreme sports guys.
