If there wasn't so much fucking bullshit self-diagnosis of "PTSD" going around on tumblr, trigger warnings would actually have a point. But tumblr is awash with people who are pretending to have PTSD and therefore think being triggered = 'this makes me feel a bit icky, or slightly pissed off', as opposed to "I have real-for-true PTSD and when I say I am triggered, what that actually means is I will have a full fucking meltdown panic attack, unable to breathe, chest constrictions and all, I will completely be incapacitated briefly."

People with actual diagnosed PTSD are not triggered by a list of twenty things including sponges. This is tumblr bullshit perpetrated by muppets who think that being mentally ill is kewl and speshul. It is neither. If you would like confirmation of that, find anyone you know with a diagnosed mental illness and ask them how cool and fun it is. Be sure to stand outside punching range whilst you do this.

Alternatively, if you would really like PTSD, major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorder, doctors confirm I have all of these, and I don't want any of them. Perhaps we can do a swap. I will take your completely-made-up personality disorder/fake gender dysphoria/otherkin bullshit (and then promptly forget all about it and get on with having no problems whatsoever) and you can take my mental illnesses. I will give you a free list of all the meds that didn't work, all the therapies that didn't work, and add a PS with the one med that did. Let's hope it works for you too. Oh btw. You won't need tumblr anymore; the anxiety keeps me off social media on a pretty much continual basis because LOL TALKING TO PEOPLE, and I last had my photo taken on my wedding day. Have fun!

A triggerfish.

You bastard.

The trend of tagging any photograph or drawing of a human (or even an animal) looking towards the viewer as "scopophobia" is one of the dumbest of Tumblr trends.

Somebody who actually had scopophobia explained that it was fucking stupid, because of course a person who's irrationally afraid of being watched can tell the difference between a photograph and a real person, but Tumblr told them just because they felt patronized didn't mean that somebody didn't appreciate it, OMG.

The amount of "#scopophobia" reblogs I see on average is beyond ridiculous. The trend literally popped up out of nowhere and now it's everywhere. I run a Sailor Moon blog and literally every picture I post gets tagged as "scopophobia" at least a few times. I guess some people get triggered by anime characters looking at the camera even though they're not real people?

This actually brings up a good topic, though; people on Tumblr tend to make up imaginary victims who are triggered by everything under the sun and need to be protected. There's nobody in the world who is legitimately triggered by things like fruit, anime, or website changes, but Tumblrites like to pretend there is so that they can look thoughtful and enlightened when they "protect" them by tagging fucking everything and tearing down anyone who doesn't.

Christ, I know people like this IRL. Every week there's some new self-diagnosed mental illness or past trauma.

This trigger warning stuff is basically just a competitive circle-jerk of attention-seeking. "Oh, you're triggered by eyes? Well, I'm triggered by the colour red! I'm practically disabled!" That, and the SJW wankers who want to show how much more considerate than anyone else they are.

Thing is, it's a load of crap. In the real world, you're going to see things that make you uncomfortable. Do these people end each day in a catatonic state because they were walking down the street and saw a hole in the road? Clearly these trigger warnings aren't necessary.

I honestly think most of these tweens have no idea what trigger actually means. They picked it up on tumblr and use it as part of their internet lingo.

I don't know what's worse, that a bunch of Tumblrinas lied about their PTSD for attention or that by doing so they've made "triggered" synonymous with "mildly frustrated or upset."

The #trypophobia fad was always my favorite one. A bunch of people on tumblr realized they were squicked out by surinam toads and that one guro manga where the girl gets holes all over her body and that snowballed into half the site suddenly being triggered by anything with a pattern of dots on it. I remember at the height of it I went through the trypophobia tag and found the following immensely triggering images:
  • a picture of a takeout soup cup with condensation under the lid
  • an apple with a bruise on it
  • a close-up picture of a cat's tongue
  • twelve thousand pictures of Chrysalis from MLP
  • that photo of the rocks on the bing homepage
  • pancakes with air bubbles
  • lots of art with halftone-style shading

To be fair, suriname toads are pretty gross. And I've seen enough MLP fanart of Chrysalis that I'm a little squicked by in my time.

dude not cool it would have taken 5 seconds to tag that "TW:Nested Spoilers" i'm seriously shaking now holy shit

As a vet with actual for real PTSD, I'd rather not have constant trigger warnings. See, one of the few treatment modalities that work involves actually facing a triggering stimuli, over and over again, until the brain realizes that there's no reason to fire off a panic cascade.

I think if you're in a community where there's a lot of people with a common trigger, e.g. a community for rape survivors or combat vets, there's probably a utility for trigger warnings. Probably if you know somebody has a certain trigger, although that's more about personal etiquette than community guidelines.

But the idea that you can preemptively trigger warn so that nobody is triggered by what you're writing/showing is ridiculous. There are literally an infinite variety of triggers. Somebody raped by somebody wearing red could legitimately be triggered by the exact shade of red, so you'd have to trigger warn for the colour red - and every other colour, too, because who knows what rapists might wear? Trigger warning as it's discussed here is really just a way of signalling the poster's SJW cred by ostentatiously displaying the obscure triggers they're aware of. It's instructive that there are discernable fashions and trends for certain triggers, like the trypophobia and scopophobia waves.

My favourite triggers are ones where the trigger warning is identical to what it is supposedly warning for. There are so many examples of this, but probably the most common is "TW: Sex" when the sexual content of the post is simply the word "sex". When the trigger warning is literally identical to the thing it's warning people about, the warning serves no useful purpose.

This, this, this.

I have a pretty genuine trigger regarding stalking--specifically, stalking and fetishizing people being portrayed as romantic, because that's exactly what Nick did to me. Shit like that causes me to go straight into panic mode. And stalking would be a reasonable thing to hope people would tag for...but what makes me especially panicky is, of all fucking things, ships. As in fictional pairings. There's a specific Homestuck ship that is frequently shown as "cute" or "sweet" among fans, despite it being portrayed as a stalker-y situation that the girl wanted no part of in canon, and that one freaks me out so badly that I can't see fanart without wanting to vomit. It causes me to flash back to everything that fucker did and said.

So yeah, I'd argue that it's a pretty genuine trigger in the classical sense for me, and while I recognize that it's an irrational and ridiculous response, I'm also not sure how I'd be able to expose myself to a goddamn ship in a controlled environment. But I'm also fairly sure that most people who dislike the ship don't have the response I have, and just don't care for it for whatever reason. I've got plenty of shit I don't care for personally, but I don't expect everyone to tag for it.

And while I do ask people I'm friends with on Tumblr to tag that ship, I can't--and shouldn't--expect that everyone will. It'd be nice if people did, but saying "literally everyone in the fandom MUST tag this ship because ONE person has panic attacks over it" is unreasonable.

Sorry for rambling, but yeah. Part of the issue is that the term "trigger" has become, as others have mentioned, meaningless on Tumblr, which is a problem for those who have actual triggers. It's the same reason I think nounself types are harmful to the trans community. I think that if someone's first encounter with something serious is with someone treating it like some cutesy accessory (which is what Tumblr does with triggers, IMO), they're gonna be less likely to treat it as a serious issue.

(For what it's worth, I think the shift towards calling things "content warnings" instead of "trigger warnings" is helpful, especially since some things could reasonably squick people out without being a personal trigger for them. And the concept of "squicks" in fandom is one that needs to come back into vogue, IMO.)

I wish I had taken screencaps of these, but I think the stupidest trigger warning posts I've ever seen was "tw:coffee" and someone claiming they got triggered by Pusheen.

Yes, -that- Pusheen.

Anyone who claims to get triggered by that is a bad person and should be punished until they get real triggers.

"Kill yourself"

"#tw suicide, #suicide, #trigger warning: suicide, #trigger warning suicide, #tw..."

This is one of my favorite Tumblr posts, holy shit. It perfectly encapsulates the mentality of these Tumblrinas.

Nothing wrong with urging people to commit suicide, as long as you make sure not to trigger anybody! Priorities, people!

I never use Tumblr so serious question: Is non-politically correct stuff "allowed" to be a trigger? Like I'm sure there are some people who are legitimately triggered by gays and interracial marriage or whatever.

I guess the point I'm making is Hitler had some triggers. Think about that, Tumblr. Hitler.
