I appreciate the pre-Like a Dragon games will play substantially different, but are the prior Yakuza games worth going through at this point? If so where the hell do I start?

Yes. Zero and 4 are good entries as both don't require to play the previously released games (4 has a section that sums up the the plot of past titles through videos). The first Yakuza is a hard tell for me because the Kiwami remake was frankly mediocre but it's also the easiest way to get into that title without messing around with the PS2 emulation (or PS3 emulation for the japanese-only HD remaster).

Og yakuza 1 has not aged well at all, no lock on, and cant change directions mid combo. The story is good, but its not worth playing the original.
Ps2 yakuza 2 still holds up tho imo

OG Yakuza 1 on the PS2 is pretty good if you've got a real PS2 to play it on. Kiwami adds some nice backstory scenes with a major character, but overall it's a weaker, flabbier, uglier package than the original.

It's more that Kiwami 1 has questionable designs in gameplay mechanics and it's somewhat hard for me to recommend over the OG even it's easier to obtain and play it.
-The three fighting styles of Zero were shoved into Kiwami 1 in spite the Dragon style was supposed to be a culmination of Kiryu's experience with street fighting (and the experience he later gets once out of prison 10 years later) compared to his 20 years-old self in Zero.
-The Dragon style was massively nerfed as a result and you need to grind the Majima Everywhere's events a lot. The devs also made the old man's skills harder to obtain as you have to grind to underground coliseum to unlock the paintings necessary to learn the techniques (whereas in the OG the new techniques could be earned throughout story progression)
-Bosses will always enter into a state of health self-regeneration mid-way into the fight (it's also possible they will do it even twice) in which case you need to waste a heat action in order to stop it. It makes heat energy drinks a necessary must to have in the inventory when going through story chapters or even Majima Everywhere to prevent fights to be a long slog.

OG had missable side quests with no way of seeing where they could be located on the map so that's the one advantage I could think of Kiwami 1.
Again it's not a good remake but I also don't blame anyone for trying out that one due of its avaibility

it's fucking gay how i don't get a veteran's discount on the sandbox land after playing their og game on my ipod touch way back in 2012. at least the sudden popularity of their blockchain roblox clone made me stumble upon that game i played in 7th grade i'd been trying to remember the name of for literal years

A week or so ago I played through the whole Cyberpunk 2077 as a corporate. Took the A hero way out, felt like a better option than being a pawn in someones games anyway.

Felt damn well rewarding having waited so long, not played the bugged version everyone else did.

Was an awesome experience, got it for 40 euro cheaper than I would have at release and felt truly amazed by nearly everything.

Tried/wanted to do an iron man run and was super careful at the start but at hard difficulty it was just not possible. The story actually moved me, haven't really felt for game-characters other than the protagonist in a long while but this was a well woven web of mystery and intrigue that just kept me in.

Really lads, if you aren't in some kind of "gaming" group of friends or what ever, waiting for games nowdays and playing them at your own terms and when they are finished is so much better than dealing with all the broken early access nonsense or even "full release" bullshit.

I had the exact opposite result. CP was about as appealing to me as it's acronym. The gameplay felt stilted and very, *very* aged, mixed with all the worst aspects of Ubisoft open worlds.

I got it for 20 USD and I feel utterly ripped off. Admittedly, I was going in biased, as I *don't* suck CDPRs cock for their mediocre garbage, but I did *want* to like it, and I have went into games wanting to hate them, only to come out the other side kind of loving them. Even if it is a discount Shadowrun, the cyberpunk genre is fucking awesome in concept, and you can do so much with it. And the most unique thing I saw was 'video player that you can rewind to look at angles.'

Just another generic game getting by on the weirdly beloved name, considering how fucking evil CDPR is. Honestly, they're worse than EA at this point.

I think players like you expect way too much.
Some of you want meaningful interactions with every random npc, some seem to have done every single fetch quest in the game before completing it, attempting to get every achievement or all the loot.

The more you venture out of the main quest line the more empty the game feels. I've grown out of that kind of thing long ago. I used to loot "everything" in games, nowdays I barely look into containers. I think I ended the game at about level 11-12. It was a full 60 hour experience, well worth the money.

I loved the way that the spacing between the main quests through day/night cycles and/or "wait for that phone to ring" gave me the opportunity to do a few of the side quests that seemed the most interesting. I never deviated from the main quest though, keeping myself even more invested in the sense of urgency it appealed to. If I had my way there would have been a "timer" but that would probably disappoint even more people. I didn't do a single one of the missions from the extra fixers and yet always felt that the game gave me enough to progress without feeling completely outmatched.

No for me it was absolutely perfect.
The art style was mindblowing, the combat was reasonably fluid, the stealth mechanics solid.
I felt the grenades had a bit short range and some hacks were meh, but other than that I never felt I was missing something.

The driving was probably the weakest part of the game for me, but then again its not a driving game and after some time and a few upgrades I got the hang of it quite well.

You never said why you didn´t like it so Im just making educated guesses here based on what others have whined about. And the story, fuck man the story was absolute baller. I mean the way that you in the end, after some digging around realize that the son of the corporate empire who murdered his father was probably the good guy/least bad guy, having you work for essentially the bad guys the whole game. That was pretty epic.

An actual suicide ending in a game is also pretty ballsy to have. I fucking loved it. Felt so right not having to decide who of us gets to live and who doesn´t while at the same time betraying what you realize is a stone cold bitch in the form of that daughter now running the show.

Also no idea what your beef is with CDPR.
Their GOG has the most consumer friendly return policy of all the companies (30 days, no questions asked) and they make some cool games and treat the people who publish games on their platform far better than steam. Get off your high horse man.

I'd say I'm shocked you couldn't read the first line, but honestly, that's about what I'd expect from a CDPR fanboy. Jesus dude, I said it was a bad game by a worse company, not that your mom sucked tranny cock for money, settle down.

If a bare bones cyberpunk storyline and some god awful gameplay is all it takes for you, good for you, I wish my standards were that low.

Yeah, this is pretty much the best way to play stuff now. I either wait for stuff to show up on Gamepass or wait until it's 50-60% off 3 months after release when it has also been patched properly.

Sony are the exception. Stuff takes ages to come down in price and it's usually only a 25% discount or something.

Nintendo stuff is way worse for prices staying inflated.

Ages ago at a gamestop I remember an employee telling someone Nintendo tends to not drop in price like Disney. Even thrift stores stick that stuff behind the glass case now even if it's not one of the best Disney or Nintendo games.

How is t his barebones?

What kind of snob are you? What do you expect? It was an absolutely epic story with 3 branching paths that cross-section at different points, meaningful choices impacted by your actions, deep character development. Can you list something that was wrong with the story? What element were you lacking? You just kinda sound stupid and angry for no reason.

Im as far from a CDPR fanboy as you can get, Ive never bought any of their other games.
I got like witcher for free and I still never played it. So your guesswork is worse than mine. My GoG account is basically a bunch of oldschool strategy games and then Cyberpunk.

You still haven't said how it´s a bad company and nor have you given ANY examples of how the gameplay is stilted. Its the nicest company in the industry.

I found the gameplay super dynamic man, there were cool boss fights, there were stealthy parts, mini games, railshooters, FPS action. Everything man, what more do you want?

Sure, its not Battlefield level of shooting or Gran Turismo level of driving but its got a little bit of everything and it does it fairly well.
