I am going to make a shanty house entirely out of looted Arcade1Up
Don't, those cabs are shit. I get a lot of ads for crappy arcade cab knock-offs, and I wonder why they bother. If it isn't 1:1, it isn't worth shit.
Take the name. Hunt the squeaker. If it's on your team, accident the fuck out of them. If it's an opponent, hunt them until they shriek. This is how you deal with a squeaker.

Totally agree with you on Arcade1up, and what totally killed even a slight interest in those machines is that they use a significantly smaller monitor than the originals. I mean really a 17 inch screen? Might as well just do a ghetto arcade set up + laptop & fighting arcade stick. For crying out loud I'd want an arcade machine for sweet time travel nostalgia it's not going to feel the same if my grown ass towers over the machine!

I will confess I was slightly interested in their Time Crisis Arcade machine from this year because lightguns are just a lost novelty, but the screen is still 17 inches and weren't light gun games made with you having to move your arms around? Those Time Crisis Cabinets were monsters! Also the rom selection they got from Namco sucks. Who the hell is nostalgic for Steel Gunner 1 & 2? I never even heard those games. Time Crisis 2 was the best entry in the series and it's absent. Finally the Point Blank games are amazing especially for how unique they are in the genre but they couldn’t include the Point Blank 2 rom? Just obvious bullshit because Arcade1up loves to release newer machines that have better game selection.

Last time I dealt with a kid was Rainbow Six Siege years back. One match I didn't shoot an enemy because I hesitated thinking it could have been a teammate. Then one of my teammates who sounded like he was 10 years old got on mic and chided me, he wasn't even rude he just said "Homer what the hell you had him!" But anyway realizing I was playing with a child made me feel like such a manchild.

It makes me realize why CS 1.6 still has a community and will probably continue to have one for decades to come. The old school CS Players are in their 40s maybe even older. They were the college kids who did LAN parties, they're the guys who yelled at my dumb ass when I was the bratty kid who wouldn't STFU on the server.

It's not like I even really care if I'm playing with kids, they're usually better than me anyway. I just don't want to hear them. No normal man does unless it's their own family. That's why grown ass men retreat to Bars with Billiards, Golf, and senior bowling league.

The thing about CS is that it's CS. Valve figured out they had the first real phenomenon Online FPS and they were best off not screwing it up. To this day there's still middle aged men playing CS 1.6 because CSGO/2 isn't the exact same game they were playing in high school although I think it's pretty much 95% the same damn thing.
CS was originally a mod, the smart thing valve did was hiring the guys to make it official. same as icefrog for dota.

I recently had a spurt of inspiration for a game idea. After putting pen to paper, because I am not an idea guy, I promise, I found that all the OpenGL frameworks I wanted to use were pozzed. This put a damper on my inspiration.

Are there any game frameworks out there that are low-level and not currently maintained by faggots? I don't want to slurp the CoC.
you can still use unity. even with all the MUH FEEEE (which had every retard shrieking about it without even being affected or understanding how it works), it still good enough for prototyping if you don't wanna monetize it anyway.
not point in going low-level if you just wanna see if and how it might work, and properly set up easy enough to transfer if need be.

unreal is still a bloated mess, godot is troon jank.

I have to get back into PC gaming and actually play it.
while you're at it: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest
starts next week.

I double checked and the original game is half a decade old. How the fuck it takes so long for an expansion pack?

the Voidpoint team is a handful of destitute Duke 3D modders. the original game came extremely close to being cancelled and never had enough funding for any of the members to work on it full time. IIRC one of the project leads quit his day job towards the end of development, to the detriment of his finances, to work full time to get it ready for release. the release itself didn't make much money, so the DLC has been developed under similar conditions, plus corona. the new 3D Realms unfortunately does little more than distribute games, as well as offer some token publicity with the Realms Deep event and a small media op (for trailers and the like).

Could have they found a more annoying voice actor? Hard pass on what looks like gender swapped Duke, with added snark.

hard disagree, Valerie Arem is one of the big parts of the game's charm. the main character has a long history - long story short, 3D Realms tried to publish a new Duke game, got C&D'd by fucking Gearbox because they're just sitting on the property after fucking up Duke Nukem Forever, so they dug her out of the old DNF design docs and did a little reinterpretation. I personally love games with a corny main character like Serious Sam and Lo Wang (old and new), and Valerie does a great job of cutting up the gibs and explosions with colorful shit-talk. it's one of the main things consistently missing from the "boomer shooter" revival, IMO.

This looks great. I am in the process of replaying Ion Fury right now.

I'm not plugged in to any gaming discussions or gaming communities (gag) but I don't see anyone talking about Ion Fury, even with all the zoomers pretending they like boomer shooters.

It's a great game even though it has a few niggles, like the first few levels being too long and the cryptic 4-D secrets not being worth the effort. Imagine doing precision platforming in what looks like an out of bounds area just to get a single radar power up.

unfortunately the game seems to attract a lukewarm reception due to said niggles. to me it shows that a bunch of these "boomer shooter" fans are just LARPing, because Ion Fury is about as authentic as you can possibly get. it's literally built on the original Build Engine, it plays exactly like a Duke3D TC mod. it has a near-flawless grip on all the fundamentals. the soundtrack is even made in fuckin Fasttracker:

I think a lot about how games like Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein: The New Order got their knobs slobbed for being "old school" despite being heavily consolized shitfests with oppressive scripting and checkpoint save systems. back when those franchises were fresh, gaming was pretty much the exclusive domain of bullied kids and the most repulsive adult nerds, and most of them were playing shit like Mario and Zelda besides. so I guess it shouldn't really be a surprise that it's rare for people to "get" DOS-era game design.

What have you already looked at? Something like Magnum doesn't look pozzed at first blush, and none of those faggots that insist on putting their CoC(k)s in everything can actually force you to abide.
My mistake. I looked back at some old projects and none of the OpenGL libraries I was using had any immediate red flags - FTGL & GLUT. No ticking time bombs there.

I was thinking of Vulkan, where all the official Khronos repositories have a CoC, a main branch, mask-clad avatars, you name it. The old tech is still the best.

Magnum looks very interesting! I'm happy to see that it has a compatibility floor of C++11. Thank you for the suggestion.

Retroactive terms changes affect everyone. Also, all game engines are troon jank unless you wrote it yourself. All three listed have massive tranny support. At least Godot can't revoke my license.

Realms Deep was today and the Ion Fury expansion finally got a release date and it's Monday and I am soy facing so fucking hard my jaw is about to dislocate

We earned it man. After watching like 3 hours of Mike J perform auto-fellatio I swear I wanted to fucking kill myself.

It's an upsetting state of affairs; Only compounded by the fact that Ion Fury is a landmark title and one of the best games ever made.
It's still shocking to see how terrible the knockoff "Phantom Fury" is though. I mean, I fully expected it to be a mediocre at best* cashgrab but watching the footage makes my jaw drop. How the fuck was this allowed anywhere near the public?

Ps. I still think that they should've given Valerie better lines though. Shelly's one liners just don't pack a punch which is a shame in a game that makes me feel like Bart Simpson when I'm throwing around bowling bombs.

I was watching a ton of arcade stuff on youtube and those lousy cabinets come up a lot, none of them are very good.

Since the algorithm decided I want those as my ads, I see a lot of "Going out of business" sales for the ones who make the mini-cabs or "bar cabs" which are even shittier than the 1-ups.

I hear the simpsons board is so cramped you can't actually do multiplayer, because player 1's hands block player 2's stick. That... never should have gone into production.

I do dig videos where people restore old busted real cabs back to functionality.

With squeakers, I just decide they don't belong. I'm playing M rated games, and I'm not their inattentive parent. They can go fork knive.

You should try the demo. It's ghastly. The first section of the demo is the train level from Ion Fury, but done infinitely worse. The guns are pea shooters. You have to mag dump with the shotgun just to kill a basic enemy.

The sound design is trash, too. Absolutely atrocious. Nothing sounds right, the guns have very little impact, everything is really quiet, nothing has any bass. It sounds like placeholder audio played through cheap headphones.

It's like the devs played Ion Fury and said "Okay, let's make this but terrible."

A lot of modern arcade games, even for public use, are made very cheaply, too. I guess that's just the state of things now.

If you want a good quality one, you'll just have to build it yourself. Honestly though, I've been hoping to find Arcade1Ups in yard sales, but they just haven't been showing up.

From what I've seen, the people who buy 1-ups are the type to only use resale sites. It's that fucking grindset bullshit. When soys post their "hauls" I want to punch them in the throat.

Maybe that's why I like the restoration videos, less soy, less consoom.

Just build your own arcade cabinet. All it takes is some plywood, a giant space to assemble it, a bunch of tools and time.

Bungie posted this on twitter today...

lx.jpg

and people are pissed. Bungie is getting absolutely *roasted* in the replies to the point where Bungie is hiding even innocuous replies to the tweet. The fucking hypocrisy.

I remember there was always some weird mexican shit with bungie, like white people fucking around with aztec art and being lame as fuck about it.
like "We support our mexican homeboys, cuz" and the user response was "Please stop acting like that"

the only retroactive part was counting installations, tied to a revenue goal. your game with 5 million installations didn't make 200k in the last 12 months to trigger the fee? congratulations, absolutely nothing changed. and since that only came into effect 2024 counting forward for new installations, even if you went over 200k all you had to do is sub on the higher tier before that, which bumps both installation and revenue thresholds up to 1 million (exact same as unreal engine), while also reducing the fee. didn't make a million in the last 12 months? congratulations, absolutely nothing changed, besides having to pay for a more expensive subscription (which you could get for the price of your old one for a year).
it also didn't apply to most devs, especially retarded indie devs which do standalone games where sale = installation, but those where the ones throwing the biggest hissy fit.

as for all the kvetching about MUH INSTALLATIONS, unity has been running analytics for years, it's baked into the engine and lot of devs keep it enabled for their own metrics - something they were careful not to mention while shitting themselves over 20 cent once they generate over 200k a year.

regarding revoking licenses, that's the easiest way to get dragged in front of a court, especially in the EU which is always rubbing their hands for another payout. and with the same notion better not use any adobe shit, streaming services or steam (or even gog least they cancel your account and you lose access to your library).

I played the Broken Roads demo and liked what I saw. It's in the style of the old Fallouts but set in Australia, and with an interesting morality system. Definitely keeping an eye out for that one when it comes out.

I'm surprised no one else seems to be talking about this game yet. It's due out November 14th and I have pretty high hopes for it. Looks like Wasteland 2 meets Disco Elysium.
