Are videogames for children?

Since I managed to get my old parent’s computer, I’ve managed to learn more about PC emulation in gaming in just over a few days. The funny reason was because when I was trying to play my Dave Mirra BMX Freestyle 2 game for the PS2, it started to crash just a few times, yet the PS2 was still working.

In the end, I guess I was so frustrated that I just decided to inevitably take the easy way out and learn how to do it.

I forgot how slow disc based installs were. I honestly thought my scarface DVD was scratched somewhere because it stalled out in the last third, but that was just the install wizard being an ancient piece of software.

I was told that the copy protection would prevent the game from running on 10, that information was false.

The graphics were turbo ultra mega fucked to the point the camera was inside Tony Montana's head. (The game is supposed to be 3rd person)
I found out there was a silent patch, it replaces the ogg vorbis file, and then the game runs fine.

It was a trip going back in time like that.

I've been going through my old files from 2001-2004, and holy fuck, so many viruses and keyloggers.

Tell us more about your parent's old computer.

nice try but im not the stupid

It's such a good sign for all the things to come that now DLSS/FSR2 is a mandatory requirement for upcoming games.

But remember: it's not the developer's fault, it's YOUR fault for not buying a 13900K and a 4090. And if that doesn't give you a smooth experience at 1080p, then it's the devs "pushing the technology".

But don't you DARE insinuate that they're completely wasting the potential of the hardware or else you'll be insulted, shunned and given mean labels. But never called out for being wrong.

Honestly at this point AAA PC releases are a show to see just how bad things can get, because the consumers sure ass hell won't retaliate. All the devs are ignoring any form of optimization because they think the hardware will miraculously fix it for them, and it'll be getting worse and worse every year.

And I can't wait when there will be a AAA release that won't be able to run smoothly on lowest settings on a 5090Ti, with gamers being so subverted by that point that they won't boycott the current state of affairs and instead will continue to loyally defend their favorite corporations.

Anyone got reccomends for singleplayer games that'll last for a while but run on shit hardware? I was thinking Symphony of War or Tactics Ogre, but I'm not sute how long that'll last.
Underhell can last a while depending on how you play it. It took me roughly two weeks to finish it.

It was made on source in 2013 so it can run on potato software fairly impressively.

Quick update on Harebrained Schemes, they aren't dead but instead are parting ways from Paradox and going indie(again).
Neat, but replaying a fan campaign for Shadowrun Dragonfall I forgot how buggy and simple the game was. Decking especially has me quicksaving, closing and reloading a save because it hangs often.

Ring Runner flight of the sages goes for sale often for 1$ and lasts a surprising amount of time for one playthrough, probably could go up in the 50 hour mark if you want to get all challenges and try all sorts of ship configurations.

I decided to finish a select few games I've never finished back in the day. I am notoriously bad at finishing games and to be honest, many 80s-90s games were an absolute grind to finish and sheer torture. Only towards the mid-90s PC game developers slowly made games more painless and actually worthwhile to finish.

My first one's Privateer and it's expansion, Righteous Fire. Should keep me busy for a bit. Afterwards I want to go directly to the Ultima series, but I'm not entirely sure yet with which one to start. I think the least suffering would be to start with Ultima 6, but it's kinda late in the series already.

EDIT: Also not sure if I should use a classic PC. I have a lot of them standing around, even have an MT-32 and SC-55. But that's a lot of wiring up to do to play a few old games.

I ran through Privateer several years ago in dosbox. Worked pretty well. So did Alien Legacy and Protostar, which you may also enjoy if you like old DOS space games. 1942 Pacific Air War and Task Force 1942, too, if your itching for some WW2 Microprose Sim goodness. Dosbox has several good front ends to make it easy to manage a game collection, as well.

Shit. Now I'm gonna have to get my retrogaming on soon.

Has anyone tried Hometopia, and if so what did you think of it? For years I've only been using The Sims 3 to design/furnish buildings rather than actually play the game, so it'd be interesting if there was a home builder simulator where that was the whole focus and it had lots of features.

x3:tc can last a few hundred hours if it clicks with you. it's from 2008 so should be ok unless your hardware is really shit/old.

I admit I fell for a ruse (deserves trashcans for not doublechecking), but going by early benchmarks it might actually be real....

I knew it at a glance. In fact, I knew just based on the words "trashfire sibling relationship" before I even clicked the link, but the art style confirmed it.
Its actually horror, i shit you not. Nothing horrifying then to have a fucked up sister who is so manupilative that she will make do worst shit known to man so she can isolate you and use you.

Also the fact, the place they are stuck in is some organ trafficking apartment where they are apparently sold off by their parents for insurance. Which in itself is the off the top shit that you have seen in multiple medias mainly japanese.

Plus the ending is more retarded, the incest ending is only one ending and there like 4. I will give this game a 5 or so....not that interesting and you will see it die in a week.

Or when it gets updated due to being an early access title.

Alien Legacy and Protostar
Oh almost forgot about these two, loved the unique Alien Legacy setting and how it did science. I have some vague recollections about Protostar, will definitively check it out too. Will also check out the sim games, thanks. I'll probably go with Dosbox for now, if I set up a classic system I just know I'm gonna get sidetracked and not play for a minute.

Alien Legacy was surprisingly good and deep. Protostar was a (worthy enough, too, imo) quasi-official sequal to the Starflight series (gawd i loved those fucking games), which were similar to Star Control series, which were also fucking awesome. I feel ya on the hardware route, last time I set up a dedicated old Pentium box for retrogaming, I spent more time tinkering and putzing and waxing nostalgic than gaming (one day I will create the ULTIMATE universal boot disk image for every old game I like!). The DOSbox frontend route works best for me if I want to buckle down and play, but I haven't really done so in almost a decade. Im gettin too old. But its one of those things I enjoy enough, I should make more time for. I tend to have more fun retrogaming than playing most modern games. I don't even know if the frontend I used is still around, but there are several.

On a related digression, Fuck I miss Underground Gamer.
